Fiji MP splits from opposition
Fiji's self-described independent opposition MP Ketan Lal says the government needs to 'pull up its socks' and focus on the issues that matter to people rather than internal coalition squabbles. Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka had threatened to throw junior partner SODELPA out of the ruling coalition after the party's general secretary criticised a trade mission to Tonga in a social media post last week. Mr Lal now walked that back after getting an apology and the post taken down. He says the incident shows the government is too focused on internal tensions and not enough on issues like health and helping small businesses. Meanwhile he has just withdrawn his support for the opposition so-called Group of 15 to be, in his words, an independent opposition MP.
