The Remake Co. Unveils 13th Adaptation of Hit Global Franchise ‘Ten Days Without Mom'

The Remake Co., the influential format and IP distribution label created in 2007 by Argentina's FilmSharks, has reached a new milestone in its global film adaptation efforts. The company has now broken its own previous record for the most remade title, with 'Ten Days Without Mom' becoming the most adapted film in its catalog, surpassing the long-held benchmark set by 'A Boyfriend for My Wife,' which had 12 international remakes. With 13 versions either completed or in production, 'Ten Days Without Mom' continues to build momentum globally. Recent remake deals have been secured with major players including Nashe Kino in Russia, Athena in India, United King Films in Israel and Vertigo in Hungary. The wave of international interest underscores the film's broad appeal and the ongoing success of The Remake Co.'s model. More from Variety Judy Davis, 'Bridgerton's' Florence Hunt Star in 'Butterfly Stroke' Angelina Jolie Dazzles Cannes and Champions Global Cinema at the Chopard Gala: 'Anything to Make It More Accessible Is Necessary and Welcome' Lloyd Lee Choi Explores Working Class Struggles in 'Lucky Lu' Sony has renewed its remake options for both Germany and Turkey, where projects are actively in development. Meanwhile, the Spanish sequel to 'Ten Days Without Mom,' 'Padre no hay más que uno 5,' is set for theatrical release on June 26, continuing its run as one of Spain's highest-grossing film franchises. Other hits in The Remake Co.'s portfolio have shown similar global traction. 'Today We Fix the World' led Netflix's rankings across Latin America with its Mexican adaptation. 'Sin Filtro' has been remade in multiple countries, consistently topping box offices. 'Dos Más Dos' enjoyed streaming success, with its Colombian version dominating ViX+ charts. The Remake Co. also oversees valuable content libraries, including the Disney-owned Patagonik catalogue and Brazil's Total Entertainment archive, home to box-office hit 'If I Were You' ('Si Eu Fosse Você'). With demand for high-concept, remake-friendly properties continuing to grow, The Remake Co. says it is actively pursuing new partnerships and catalogue expansions to meet industry demand. Recent acquisitions and projects in development include 'Morgue,' currently being adapted for Mexico by BH5 for a 2025 release, and a Spanish-language TV series adaptation of 'Nine Queens,' a deal reportedly close to finalization with a leading OTT platform. Additional remakes are in various stages of negotiation: an English-language version of 'Letters to Father Jacob,' an Indonesian adaptation of 'Big Bad Wolves,' and a remake of 'The Others' in collaboration with Universal Pictures. According to Guido Rud, founder of FilmSharks and The Remake Co., 'A box office film does not drive remake potential, it's driven by a high-concept plot that is refreshing, modern, marketable and simple to produce. The Remake Co. has gained its leadership because of its reputation as 'tastemakers,' as we have an eye for great scripts, which is why producers tend to come to us to find a remake project to do a local production. It's all about the script.' As the global market for content localization continues to grow, The Remake Co. is poised to remain a central figure in driving international storytelling through smart, scalable adaptations. Childhood Fears Come to Life in First Trailer for ‘Don't Leave the Kids Alone' (EXCLUSIVE)

TelevisaUnivision's Videocine and international sales agent FilmSharks have just dropped the spine-chilling trailer for 'Don't Leave the Kids Alone,' the highly anticipated horror/thriller from acclaimed Mexican director Emilio Portes ('Belzebuth,' 'Pastorela'). Following its world premiere at the International Film Festival Rotterdam and screenings at BIFF and Fantaspoa, the film is set for its Mexican premiere this June at the Guadalajara Film Festival. Set in the analog world of the late '80s, 'Don't Leave the Kids Alone' follows recently widowed Catalina (Ana Serradilla), who leaves her two sons, Mati and Emi, home alone for a night. What begins as sibling rivalry over a video game console spirals into psychological terror when an unseen force begins to manipulate their bond, feeding paranoia, fear and dark fantasy. 'It's masterfully crafted and has the narrative depth and style of some of the best U.S. directors working today.' Portes, known for fusing emotional depth with supernatural thrills, calls the project 'a personal journey back to our childhood.' The film explores the excitement and danger of being left alone when imagination and fear collide in a pre-digital world. 'It's about the rivalry between siblings, their indestructible bond and that impulsive fantasy of wanting to be the only child,' he explains. Backed by one of Latin America's biggest production powerhouses, and with Videocine retaining North and South American rights, 'Don't Leave the Kids Alone' is poised to be one of the region's genre standouts of 2025. Also starring José Sefami ('Amores Perros') and newcomer Juan Pablo Velasco, the feature promises both heart and horror, and a haunting reminder of what it felt like to be a child, alone in the dark. Uruguay Emerges as International Shoot Hub

In December 2024, as a film-TV force, Uruguay came of age, co-hosting with Cannes Film Market, Ventana Sur, Latin America's biggest film-TV market, held since 2009 in Buenos Aires. Easy-to-work and welcoming, Ventana Sur also showcased what Uruguay can bring to the table. More from Variety Local Talent, Schooled on International Shoots, Boosts Uruguay's Film Industry FilmSharks Pounces on International Sales Rights to Videocine's 'Don't Leave the Kids Alone' (EXCLUSIVE) LevelK Inks Multiple Deals on Sex Positive Comedy 'Sudden Outburst of Emotions' and 'Dancing Queen in Hollywood' at EFM (EXCLUSIVE) That, as of 2024, is rather a lot and cuts two ways: 'Both production services on foreign shoots and international co-productions,' says Marcio Migliorisi, head of international affairs at Uruguay's film-audiovisual agency ACAU. Put together, they make Uruguay an ever-stronger film-TV hub and port-in-the-storm on a now highly volatile Latin American film-TV scene. One game changer has been Uruguay's sky-rocketed international shoot scene. Since 2019, Uruguay has hosted Keanu Reeves' 'The Conquest,' with troops storming Montevideo's central Plaza de la Independencia. The country also saw Bill Condon shoot the prison scenes of 'Kiss of the Spider Woman' and Brazil's 'Senna,' using Montevideo's airport to create a racetrack. Most spectacularly as all Montevideo-based Cimarrón, now a pan-Latin American company owned by The Mediapro Studio, provided services on 'The Society of the Snow,' from helping him to shoot the exact mountain backgrounds in the Valle de Lágrimas where the crash took place, and renovate Montevideo's old Carrasco Airport, now in disuse, for early scenes. The shoot serviced by Cimarrón called for 400 technicians and sometimes over 1,000 actors and extras. Other shoots serviced in Uruguay include Daniel Burman's 'Yosi, the Regretful Spy,' Oscar winner Armando Bo's 'El Presidente,' Disney+'s 'El mejor infarto de mi vida,' HBO Max's 'Amsterdam,' Max's 'Margarita' and Dori Media thriller 'Amaia.' 'Uruguay's emergence as an international shoot hub is no matter of chance. With a population of 3.4 million fuelled by emigration from Europe, Uruguay cannot live on its internal market,' observes producer Andrés Varela. Its economy has always looked abroad. 'Uruguay is accustomed to collaboration, working together, given its scale and cultural and multicultural characteristics,' says Migliorisi. In 2019, Uruguay's government launched a pilot Uruguay Audiovisual Program (PUA), offering up to 20%-25% cash rebates on foreign shoots and sizeable international co-productions, which are also waived 22% VAT payments. Capped at $1 million per title, the rebates are not the only reason foreign companies, most especially global streamers, shoot in Uruguay. COVID-19 hit Latin America in March 2020, five months after a pilot PUA was put it place. But the virus' incidence was low in Uruguay, with just 1,611 confirmed cases by September. With health and security protocols quickly put into place, Cimarrón's first production service, Prime Video's 'Manhãs de Setembro,' kicked off that same month. Other shoots – 'Yosi,' 'El Presidente' – followed quickly. What streamers warmed to is a safe and stable country, in political and economic terms, with lower costs by international standards, stunning Montevideo architecture, from the colonial to neo-classical, Caribbean – convincing Michael Mann to shoot 2006's 'Miami Vice' in the country – and Art Nouveau and Art Deco. At a compact difference outside Montevideo are 1,000 kilometers of coast, a broad gamut of beaches, desert dunes and extensive rural landscapes. Also key is the quality and depth of its local talent and technician pool. 'Over the last 15 years, a lot of universities in Uruguay have trained generations of highly flexible technicians, writers and directors,' says Cimarrón's Santiago López. Shoot costs have not spiraled in consequence, adds Agustina Chiarino. Also, the industry has grown in specific technical expertise. Uruguay's service scene is growing. Over 2019-23, 48 international productions shot in Uruguay. 20 filmed alone in 2024, according to ACAU stats. Now, the 'big challenge,' says Musaluppi, is how to leverage big shoots from overseas to develop Uruguayan talent. FilmSharks Pounces on International Sales Rights to Videocine's ‘Don't Leave the Kids Alone' (EXCLUSIVE)

Buenos Aires-based FilmSharks has pacted with TelevisaUnivision-affiliated Videocine to handle the international sales on horror pic 'Don't Leave the Kids Alone' by Emilio Portes ('Belzebuth,' 'Pastorela'). Among the leading distribution and production companies in Mexico, Videocine has slated the high concept pic's theatrical release for the second quarter of this year, said FilmSharks CEO-founder Guido Rud, who announced the deal at Berlinale's EFM, among other pacts. Videocine retains North and South American rights. More from Variety LevelK Inks Multiple Deals on Sex Positive Comedy 'Sudden Outburst of Emotions' and 'Dancing Queen in America' at EFM (EXCLUSIVE) Freaks Factory and Ka-Ching Cartoons Board 'The Growcodile' (EXCLUSIVE) Erotic Queer Thriller 'Night Stage,' Playing in Berlinale's Panorama Section, Sells to North America, U.K. and Ireland (EXCLUSIVE) 'We are thrilled to continue collaborating with Videocine's incredible team after so many years,' said Rud who has handled other Videocine horror titles such as 'Karem, the Possession,' 'Come Play with Me' and 'El habitante.' 'We've long been admirers of the director's previous work,' he noted, adding: ''Don't Leave the Kids Alone' is a masterfully crafted gem in its genre, with a narrative scope that rivals the best work of top-tier U.S. directors in recent years.' Starring Ana Serradilla ('My Best Friend's Wedding') and Jose Sefami ('Amores Perros'), the '80s-set genre pic centers on recently widowed Catalina and her two boys, ages seven and 10. One night she leaves them alone for a work-related event. They set out to unpack their prized video game console, unaware that something sinister is making them turn against each other. The film had its world premiere at the 54th Rotterdam Int'l Film Fest in early February. In his director's statement, Portes remarked that although 'Don't Leave the Kids Alone' is a horror film, it was also 'a very personal journey back to our childhood.' 'The film takes us back to an analog era with telephone landlines and no internet: to experience the adventure of being left alone one night, without adult supervision, having the house to ourselves, to watch horror movies in secret, digging out the forbidden board games, playing with the primal video games consoles, running around barefoot, ordering delivery pizzas, drinking supersize sodas and letting our imagination run wild, but especially our scariest nightmares,' he mused. This is Portes' fifth film where he also sought to delve into 'the rivalries among siblings, their unbreakable bonds, the impulsive fantasies of becoming an only child.' Portes' 2020 pic 'Belzebuth,' a Mexican border-set thriller about infanticide, was a critical and box office hit. It streamed on Shudder where it was the fifth most watched film that year. FilmSharks recently announced a raft of new distribution deals for Argentine animated pic 'Dalia and the Red Book' at EFM, including with Vision Films for North America. Talks are underway for the U.K., France, Korea, China, Italy and Scandinavia.
