The Memorial picks, odds: Three best bets at Muirfield Village

The PGA Tour makes its annual stop to Muirfield Village, aka 'Jack's Place,' this week for the Memorial. Along with The Players and the Waste Management Phoenix Open, the Memorial has the feel of a tournament one tier below a major championship. That means you can expect a tough course, an elite field and a lot of good prices on the betting board. Scottie Scheffler, the defending champion, is the clear favorite to win the 2025 Memorial Tournament. He's +280 this week and in a league of his own on the oddsboard. With no Rory McIlroy in the field, there is a wide gap between Scheffler and the chasing pack. Collin Morikawa, a two-time runner-up at the Memorial and the winner of the 2020 Workday (which was held here to replace a Covid-canceled event in July of that year), and Xander Schauffele are next up at 16/1 odds, just ahead of Justin Thomas at 18/1. As with any tournament with this kind of setup, there are some tempting prices out there on some big names, but it must be said that this event has been dominated by the superstars in recent years. Bryson DeChambeau, Patrick Cantlay (twice), Jon Rahm, Viktor Hovland and Scheffler all have wins here since 2018, while the only real surprise in that span was Billy Horschel in 2023. However, that run of chalk ended a ridiculous three-year stretch of long-shot winners. First was Willie McGirt in 2015, then came David Lingmerth in 2016 and Jason Dufner shocked everyone in 2017. Tony Finau has endured an up-and-down 2025 season so far. IMAGN IMAGES via Reuters Connect Best bets for the Memorial Shane Lowry (40/1, DraftKings) He doesn't have any hardware to show for it, but 2025 has been a terrific year for Shane Lowry. The Irishman has two runner-ups and four top-10 finishes in 11 outings (not including team events) this season, and he's just a couple of weeks removed from a T2 at the Truist Championship. So, why is Lowry sitting at 40/1? Recency bias. Lowry missed the cut as a trendy sleeper pick at the PGA Championship, causing plenty of punters to abandon ship and his price to drift. We'll buy the dip and hope that the former Open Champion can make some noise in Ohio this week. Get the lowdown on the Best USA Sports Betting Sites and Apps Tony Finau (50/1, FanDuel) It looks like Tony Finau is starting to turn things around. After a Jekyll-and-Hyde start to 2025, Finau has posted back-to-back top-20 finishes at the Truist and PGA Championship, putting him back on the radar for this week's event. Finau has five top-15 finishes at the Memorial, including two top-10s in his last three trips to Jack's Place. It's the right time and place to get back in on Finau. Nick Taylor is a five-time winner on the PGA Tour. Getty Images Nick Taylor (170/1, FanDuel) We'll channel Dufner, Lingmerth and McGirt with one dart for this week's trip to Muirfield Village. Nick Taylor is the type of golfer you always want to consider backing when his price drifts this far out. The Canadian is a five-time winner on the PGA Tour and already has taken a trip to the winner's circle in 2025 (Sony Open). What's more is that Taylor has proven he loves the big moment. Not only does the Winnipeg native have three wins via playoff, but he's won some big titles including the 2023 Canadian Open and 2024 Waste Management Phoenix Open. Taylor missed the cut at the PGA Championship, but he posted a T17 at the Truist a few weeks back. PGA Championship: How Utahns Patrick Fishburn and Tony Finau fared in the first round

Tony Finau hits his tee shot on the second hole during a practice round for the PGA Championship golf tournament at the Quail Hollow Club, Wednesday, May 14, 2025, in Charlotte, N.C. The Utah native finished the first round Thursday at 1-under. | David J. Phillip, Associated Press Former BYU golfer Patrick Fishburn has a lot of work to do if he wants to make the cut in his first major golf championship. Meanwhile, former Salt Lake City resident Tony Finau is in good shape to play this weekend after shooting a 1-under 70 on Thursday in the first round of the PGA Championship at Quail Hollow Golf Club in Charlotte, North Carolina. Advertisement Starting on the 10th hole Thursday morning, Fishburn made birdies on holes 14 and 15 to get to 2-under, but from there it was a bogey-filled nightmare for the Ogden native who is in his second season on the PGA Tour. Fishburn, 32, made six straight bogeys after the hot start, then also bogeyed holes 6 and 9 and posted a 6-over 77 in his first round. Finau was tied for 23rd and Fisburn was in 134th place at 1 p.m. MDT Thursday with most of the field of 156 still out on the course. Another golfer who struggled in the morning wave was former PGA champion Phil Mickelson, who carded an 8-over 79. Playing in his 36th major and 11th PGA Championship, Finau is looking to make the cut in the PGA for the ninth-straight year. He tied for 18th at Valhalla Golf Club in Louisville, Kentucky, last year, fading on the weekend a bit after a great start. Finau also started on the back nine Thursday and was 1-over at the turn; he birdied the difficult 454-yard No. 2 hole to get to even par, then bogeyed No. 3 before making birdies on two of his final six holes. Advertisement Friday, Fishburn will tee off at 10:41 a.m. MDT with Andre Chi and Seamus Power. Finau will start on the No. 1 tee at 11:58 a.m. with Nicolai Hojgaard and Max Greyserman. Finau, who is still seeking his first major championship win, is No. 43 on the FedEx Cup points list, while Fishburn is 107th.

Soggy golf star Tony Finau walks on water to get out of bother at Quail Hollow

American ace had to get the feet drenched during his PGA Championship bid Soaked Tony Finau had to squelch his way out of bother at the PGA Championship after playing a shot with his feet submerged in water. The American star was in need of some fresh shoes and socks after a visit to the drink during his opening round at Quail Hollow. ‌ Finau, who was playing alongside European Ryder Cup hero Nicolai Hojgaard and Max Greyserman, had to get the feet drenched after a wayward shot on his ninth hole of the round, the final hole on the course, as he started on the 10th tee. ‌ Mercifully for the home star, his ball had finished on the banking next to the stream and was able to be played up the fairway. However, the only way to get that job done was to get his feet into the water for a stance and he had to suffer in the water as he chopped a recovery shot up towards the green in an attempt to get back into position. Finau was not able to rescue the situation as he had to settle for a bogey five as he dropped to one-over par at that stage of his round. To his credit, the Utah man managed to get dried off once he'd paddled out of the problems and got himself into the players at under-par as he battled back into red figures. Tony Finau sinks hole-in-one at Valero Texas Open to save his round, make the cut in San Antonio

Tony Finau's ace came at the perfect time on Friday afternoon. The hole-in-one not only completely saved his round, but it ensured that he'll get to stick around for the weekend at the Valero Texas Open. Advertisement Finau landed his tee shot on the front edge of the 16th green and rolled it in perfectly for his third career ace on the PGA Tour late Friday. That sparked a massive celebration on the tee box at TPC San Antonio, where Finau launched his iron and then turned and threw his hat toward the crowd. Though the hole-in-one was remarkable on its own, it's when Finau sank it that made the difference. Finau was coming off of three straight bogeys when he stepped up to the 199-yard par-3, which had pushed him to 2-over on the day and outside of the projected cut line. The ace immediately brought him back to even par for the day, and 3-under on the week. He then finished out his round with back to back pars to post his 72, which had him safely inside the cut line. Advertisement Finau has won six times in his career on the PGA Tour, most recently at the 2023 Mexico Open. He's missed three cuts in nine starts now this season, though he has just one top 10 finish — which came in a T5 run at The Genesis Invitational. He entered this week at No. 33 in the Official World Golf Rankings. A win for Finau this week is probably out of the question. After his 3-under 69 to start the week, he now trails leader Brian Harman by nine shots at the midway point of the event — which is the last Tour stop before the Masters next week at Augusta National. Harman built up his massive lead with his 6-under 66 on Friday. But Finau gets to finish his week out after all. As he heads into what will be his eighth Masters start next week, that could make a significant difference at the first major championship of the year.
