On Monday, June 23, first responders were alerted to reports of an unresponsive boy at a home in Fingal Bay, around 140 miles north of Sydney, at around 12.10 p.m. local time, New South Wales Police told PEOPLE in a statement. "He died at the scene," the release added. Australian newspaper The Daily Telegraph reported that the tragedy happened after the boy's hoodie became trapped on a curtain rod and tightened around his neck while he was playing inside the family home. This has yet to be confirmed by the local authorities, who added that "Police have commenced an investigation into the circumstances surrounding the incident," in their statement. "A report will be prepared for the Coroner," the police added. Neighbors spoke to The Daily Telegraph about hearing the cries of the child's mother after she found her son. 'They're the most beautiful family … we are all still traumatised by yesterday,' one person told the outlet. 'All we know is she (the child's mother) was only out of the room like for a minute and he's jumped up I think and it's gotten snagged on the (curtain) rod.' 'Police have commenced an investigation into the circumstances surrounding the incident,' a NSW Police spokesman said, per and 7News. The Daily Telegraph reported that the death was similar to that of toddler Jack Mackay, who died in the same area in 2013 while playing in his crib with a loose curtain cord, which tragically wrapped around his neck. Emergency services were called to a house in Fingal Bay, north of Newcastle, about 12.10pm Monday and found a two-year-old boy unresponsive. Police began performing CPR on the child until NSW Ambulance and CareFlight doctors arrived at the property. Despite their best efforts, the boy was pronounced dead at the scene. 'Police have commenced an investigation into the circumstances surrounding the incident,' a NSW Police spokesman said. A report will be prepared for the coroner.
