Boy, 14, killed in 'extremely rare' suspected murder as police warn teens
Teens have been urged to hand videos over to police after 14-year-old Christopher McBurnie died in an 'extremely rare' suspected murder on the Isle of Man - one of the safest places in the world Police provide update after the murder of Christopher McBurnie An island community has been rocked after a 14-year-old boy died and a youngster was arrested in an "extremely rare" suspected murder. Christopher McBurnie was "found collapsed" by emergency services in the picturesque coastal town of Ramsey on the Isle of Man on Thursday. Despite "immediate medical intervention", police said the teenager was "tragically" pronounced dead at the scene. A "juvenile suspect" has been arrested in connection with the investigation and remained in custody yesterday for questioning. News of the incident has sent shockwaves across the Isle of Man, where murder investigations are highly unusual. In March, the annual Global Residence Index ranked the British Crown dependency as third safest place in the world, behind only the micro-states of Liechtenstein and Andorra. Isle of Man Constabulary's Chief Constable Foster said he was "aware" that footage of the incident was being shared among local teenagers on social media. He urged youths not to share the videos, and instead hand them over to police. In a video statement last night, he said: "It is with deep sorrow that I confirm the tragic death of Christopher Benjamin Robert James McBurnie, who was just 14 years of age" "Our thoughts, heartfelt condolences and deepest sympathy with the family, friends and loved ones during this extremely sad and incredibly difficult time. Specialist officers are supporting Christopher's family and will continue to do so throughout the investigation. "At 3.38pm on Thursday 29 May 2025, emergency services responded to an incident in the area of Close Drean, Ramsey where Christopher was found collapsed. Despite the valiant efforts of members of the public, our officers, the Fire and Rescue Service and paramedics, they were unable to save Christopher. "And whilst he was pronounced deceased at the scene, the official cause of death will be determined by a Home Office pathologist in due course." "A murder investigation has been launched and I can confirm that a juvenile suspect has been arrested on suspicion of murder and is detained in custody." He added: "I would ask that people refrain from disputing such imagery, which is likely to cause significant distress and increase tension in a community which is already shocked by the magnitude of an occurrence which is extremely rare for the Isle of Man. "I would like to take this opportunity to appeal for calm and allow the investigation team to conduct a thorough and professional investigation." "Anyone with information that may assist the investigation is urged to contact police on 631212 or contact Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111 where your call will be treated in the strictest confidence." Friends of the family have set up a JustGiving page to raise money for funeral expenses - and have so far smashed their £5,000 target by raising over £7,300. In a tribute, organiser Chloe Callister said Christopher brought "so much joy and love to his whole family" who "love him so deeply."

'Milestone day's as £50m firefighter training centre opens in Tyrone
A new £50 million training centre for firefighters has been opened in Northern Ireland. The state-of-the-art facility in Cookstown, Co Tyrone, provides opportunities for scenario-based training in things like water rescue and collapsed buildings. There is also a farm building and slurry tank to replicate the danger of slurry gases and provide an opportunity to train in large animal rescue. One of the buildings also doubles as the deck of a ship with a bridge which can be set on fire. Training is already being provided to firefighters from the Republic of Ireland at the site. Officers were also given collapsed building training in the wake of the Creeslough tragedy in 2022 in which ten people died. Dublin, Galway, Laois and Cork have all sent teams for Urban Search and Rescue training. Northern Ireland's Chief Fire Officer Aidan Jennings described the opening of the new centre as a "milestone day" for the Northern Ireland Fire and Rescue Service. "The college is revolutionising how we train and develop our people to meet the evolving needs of a modern-day Fire and Rescue Service and build on the collaborative working with other emergency responders and statutory agencies," Mr Jennings said. "This is key to successful emergency incident intervention and resolution," he added. The £50m centre is a scaled back project from what had originally been envisaged on the site almost 20 years ago. It was originally intended to be a joint training facility for all the emergency services including the police and ambulance service. However, it was dogged by delay and questions over funding. It was scaled back in recent years to be a fire service only facility. Northern Ireland First Minister Michelle O'Neill and Deputy First Minister Emma Little-Pengelly attended today's opening along with several other executive ministers. Ms O'Neill said the training centre would serve people for generations. "And it is no less than our brave firefighters deserve; the people selflessly confront dangerous situations to keep people safe and save lives," she said. "As well as being a real asset to the Mid Ulster area, it will stand as a centre of excellence that supports the safety of our whole community for many years to come," she added. Ms Little-Pengelly said it would allow trainees to develop the skills to deal with an increasingly complex set of emergencies. "It will ensure the brave men and women who pass through the doors are well equipped to save lives and protect property and the environment in the best and safest way possible," she said. At present 42 firefighters are completing their training at the centre, the first recruits to pass through it.

Bicester firefighter was true hero, family says
The family of a firefighter who died in a devastating blaze at an Oxfordshire business park have said he was "born" to do the job. Firefighters Martyn Sadler, 38, and Jennie Logan, 30, were killed along with father-of-two Dave Chester in the fire that engulfed the Bicester Motion site last Thursday evening. Mr Sadler's family said the "passion and dedication" he had for the job was "outstanding". "Our world has fallen apart and our hearts are completely broken, but somewhere in amongst it all we are immensely proud of him and his unwavering bravery," the tribute added. "Martyn was born to be a firefighter. Coming from a strong fire service family it was always in his blood, but it was significantly more than that with him, it was his life," his family said. "From as early as he learnt to walk and talk his days were filled with episodes of Fireman Sam or London's Burning and as soon as he was old enough to join the fire cadets his career began. He achieved way beyond his dreams and nothing would ever put a bigger smile on his face. "He was a loving husband, son, brother, uncle and all-round family member, an amazing friend, a committed colleague and the true definition of a hero." Two more firefighters remain in hospital in a stable condition after suffering serious injuries in the fire, which was brought under control. A police investigation has since been launched. Ten fire and rescue crews were called to tackle the blaze at about 18:30 BST on Thursday which rapidly spread through a former aircraft hangar at the site on Buckingham Road, and a major incident was declared. Thames Valley Police said it had now taken over the scene from Oxfordshire County Council's Fire and Rescue Service after fire crews had brought the fire under control and made the area safe. Fire at Cissie Gool House displaces dozens and highlights housing failures in Cape Town
A fire displaced about 50 people at Cissie Gool, Woodstock, Cape Town. Image: Supplied A devastating fire ripped through a section of Cissie Gool House, formerly the Woodstock Hospital, in the early hours of Monday morning, displacing dozens of residents and reigniting criticism of the City of Cape Town's approach to housing, emergency preparedness and informal communities. According to the City's Fire and Rescue Service spokesperson, Jermaine Carelse, an emergency call was received at 3.35am, reporting the fire at the Mountain Road property in Woodstock. Fire crews from Roeland Street, Sea Point, Salt River and Milnerton stations were dispatched to the scene. The damage caused by a fire at Cissie Gool, Woodstock, Cape Town. Next Stay Close ✕ Upon arrival, they encountered flames engulfing the first floor, with the fire having broken through the roof. Aerial firefighting equipment had to be deployed to contain the blaze. 'Firefighters managed to extinguish the blaze by 7am,' said Carelse. 'Thankfully, no injuries were reported thanks to the swift response by both residents and emergency personnel. "A building inspector has been requested to assess whether the structural integrity has been compromised. The cause of the fire is still under investigation.' While the official displacement figure has not yet been confirmed, GOOD Party councillor Roscoe Palm and community activists say the fire has left closer to 50 people without shelter, bedding, or clothing, just as winter begins to bite. In a strongly worded statement, Palm condemned the City's failure to engage with the Cissie Gool House community and blamed the fire's impact on 'the continuing refusal to acknowledge and support' the hundreds of families living in the repurposed public hospital. 'This is not the first fire at Cissie Gool House. It is, however, another painful reminder of the City of Cape Town's failure to provide basic safety infrastructure,' Palm said. 'The ongoing absence of essential fire safety equipment is a direct result of negligence. Residents have long requested fire extinguishers and basic services. The City has ignored them.' Palm called on the City's Disaster Management department to urgently provide trauma relief, blankets, warm clothing, and food for those displaced, especially vulnerable groups such as the elderly, women, and children. 'They are not invisible. They are not 'hijackers.' They are residents. Taxpayers. Human beings,' he said. 'Cissie Gool House has become a refuge for those displaced by systemic housing failures and the gentrification of Woodstock. This disaster did not have to happen.' Reclaim the City, the housing activist movement supporting Cissie Gool House residents, confirmed that the fire was initially contained to one section of the building but flared up again later in the morning. 'We thank those who continue to support this resilient and courageous community. We call on the City to act, not with evictions, but with empathy. This is a time for solidarity,' the movement said in a statement. Emergency accommodation has since been arranged in communal halls within the building. But many families remain without critical supplies. Some elderly residents with chronic health conditions now face winter temperatures with no mattresses, blankets, or warm clothing. Cooking gas and household supplies were also lost in the fire. Reclaim has urgently called for donations. To help those affected, the community has issued an urgent appeal for both financial support and in-kind donations.
