Business of the Week: Ross Park Zoo

BINGHAMTON, N.Y. (WIVT/WBGH) – The Ross Park Zoo is the Greater Binghamton Chamber Business of the Week. The zoo is committed to preserving wildlife and is home to 50 different species, half of which are in a species survival program. This year, Ross Park Zoo is celebrating its 150th anniversary. In 1875, Erastus and Cornelia Ross donated the land for Ross Park and the zoo which is the 5th oldest in the country. Executive Director Phil Ginter says the zoo has been creating cherished memories for generations. 'There are a lot of really fond memories that people share with us when we're talking with them about what it was like growing up, and it's giving us a lot to think about and to focus on as we work on a new master plan for the zoo and what we can do to capture that next generation of residents in our community and inspire them to be conservationists moving forward,' said Ginter. Ginter says the zoo is about to break gorund on the first phase of its new Nature Play Space called First Encounters located between the zoo and the Discovery Center. When it's completed, visitors will be able to enjoy exploring Park Creek, take a treehouse walk, explore a cave and climb up to an eagle's nest. There will also be three campsites for overnight programming. The zoo is hosting its annual Eggstravaganza event on April 18 and 19.
