Ferne McCann hits back at sceptics questioning why she's 'still' breastfeeding Finty, two
Ferne McCann has hit back at cruel critics who questioned why she is "still" breastfeeding her almost two-year-old daughter, Finty. The star, 34, had enough of people asking about her parenting methods and took to her Instagram page to share footage of her and her baby daughter as she explained why she 'still' breastfeeds her.
The NHS recommends that babies should exclusively breastfeed until six months of age however, it adds: "You and your baby can carry on enjoying the benefits of breastfeeding for as long as you like". Despite the advice, Ferne has been on the receiving end of cruel and judgemental criticism over her parenting choice.
"I get asked all the time 'Are you STILL breastfeeding?," she said in her caption. "To me it feels like the most natural thing in the world. And I wonder when the question changed from 'are you breastfeeding?' To 'are you still breastfeeding?' There's so much misinformation about how long breastfeeding is 'appropriate'."
She added: "Here's what most people don't realise…WHO recommends breastfeeding at least until 2. It boosts immunity and connection, still. You're not 'spoiling' them. You're nurturing them. Let's keep the conversation open." The video showcased Ferne breastfeeding Finty on the beach. She wrote over the video: "Yes, she's 21 months. And yes, we're still breastfeeding."
Fans were immediately supportive of her post and praised her in the comment section, with one commenting: "I have no idea why people think that's anyone's business but yours. Well done you."
"I say it again, THANKYOU for using your platform like this," another posted while one wrote: "People need to be more mindful of their language and using words like 'still'.
"It's the biological norm and people should be radiating positivity for what you are continuing to do! Go mama go."
One commented: "I breastfed both my boys until they were 2, breastfed for 4 years consecutively, it's such a beautiful thing if you're lucky enough to be able to do it."
Ferne has always been open about her family life, letting cameras follow her first on ITVBe show First Time Mum from 2017. She has decided to call time on the show (then called My Family & Me), last year for the sake of her children.
After thinking about giving her family more privacy for a while, the final straw came for Ferne when her six-year-old daughter Sunday asked her, "Mummy, am I famous?"
Ferne, who shares one-year-old daughter Finty with fiancé Lorri Haines and Sunday from her previous relationship, opened up about the hurdles in her and Lorri's relationship after having Finty - saying they had been "prioritising intimacy" after rumours swirled about cracks appearing.
'I could have gotten really anxious or down about the split rumours but I've just said, 'Let's park it and move forward,'' she recently said.
