Lake fills with hybrid fish in time for summer fishing at Ohio's oldest State Park

Over 200,000 saugeye fish were released into the lake at Ohio's oldest State Park just in time for summer fishing and camping. [DOWNLOAD: Free WHIO-TV News app for alerts as news breaks] The Ohio Department of Natural Resources (ODNR) released 217,000 saugeye into Grand Lake St. Marys on May 21, according to a media release by ODNR. The popular sport fish grow quickly and are accustomed to Ohio's reservoirs since they are tolerant of warm and shallow water. The saugeye released were fingerlings that measured one or two inches in length. ODNR said these fish will grow to the catchable size of 13 to 15 inches by the fall of 2026. Ohio fish pins awarded to anglers in local lakes

(WKBN) – Thousands of anglers were recognized in Ohio in 2024 for reeling in trophy fish. Those who reel in a qualifying catch received the commemorative Fish Ohio pin for their first entry and a Master Angler pin for catching qualifiers of four different species in the same year. Last year, 903 anglers were awarded a Master Angler pin, and there were 10,284 pins awarded overall. Since the Fish Ohio program began in 1976, more than 420,000 catches have been recognized. Applications for Fish Ohio pins are on the Fish Ohio website. Trophy fish are caught in bodies of water across the state, but most come from those caught in Lake Erie — the 'Walleye Capital of the World.'
