Pope Leo XIV meets with VP JD Vance and Secretary of State Marco Rubio

WASHINGTON − Pope Leo XIV met privately with Vice President JD Vance, Secretary of State Marco Rubio and their wives, the Vatican announced May 19. Vance, the first Catholic convert to serve as vice president, and Rubio led a delegation as the first U.S.-born leader of the church formally assumed his role with a Mass May 18 in St. Peter's Square attended by tens of thousands of people, including dozens of world leaders. After the private meeting, Vance met with Archbishop Paul Richard Gallagher, the Vatican's secretary for relations with states and international organizations, to discuss religious freedom and collaboration between the Catholic church and U.S. government. 'Finally, there was an exchange of views on some current international issues, during which hope was expressed that humanitarian law and international law be respected in areas of conflict and that there be a negotiated solution between the parties involved,' according to the Holy See's press office. Vance met with the late Pope Francis on April 20, less than 24 hours before the pope died following a weeks-long battle with double pneumonia and other health issues. Before Leo was elected pope on May 8, the then-Cardinal Robert Francis Prevost of Chicago promoted several opinion articles on social media, some as recently as April, critical of Vance's interpretation of Scripture and immigration. "JD Vance is wrong: Jesus doesn't ask us to rank our love for others," one headline posted Feb. 3 reads. But the White House has brushed off Leo's social media commentary. The inaugural Mass became a celebration for 1.4 billion Catholics worldwide. The new pontiff rode into the square on a popemobile for the first time ahead of his investiture wearing a liturgical garment called the Pallium, made of lambswool. When the papal Fisherman's Ring was slipped onto the ring finger of Leo's right hand, he took a moment to glance at the new gold ornament before folding his hands in prayer. Well-wishers carried U.S. and Peruvian flags to cheer the first pope from the United States. The 69-year-old pontiff was born in Chicago and spent many years as a missionary in Peru, where he also has citizenship, making him the first pontiff tied to that South American nation. In addition to meeting the pope, Vance met with other international leaders May 18 while in Rome. These meetings included: The topic of peace negotiations Ukraine's President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, aiming to reach a lasting ceasefire with Russia, which invaded his country in 2022. Trump plans to meet May 19 with Zelenskyy and Russia's President Vladimir Putin. A trade meeting with Italy's Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni and Ursula von der Leyen, president of the European Union commission. The talks also dealt with increasing cooperation over defense, migration issues and the war between Russia and Ukraine. A meeting to discuss unspecified shared interests with the United Kingdom's Deputy Prime Minister Angela Rayner and Foreign Secretary David Lammy. The U.S. reached its first trade agreement with the United Kingdom after Trump imposed worldwide tariffs on imports. Another trade meeting with Canada's Prime Minister Mark Carney. Pope Leo XIV's inaugural Mass draws global leaders

Pope Leo XIV was welcomed by a sea of faithful as he made his way through Via della Conciliazione aboard the Popemobile to the sound of applause and chants of "Viva il Papa," just ahead of the inaugural Mass marking the start of his papacy. St Peter's Square was filled with international delegations and religious leaders from across the globe. European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen, US Vice President JD Vance, and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy were among the guests. A strong clerical presence was also noticeable among the attendees, with around 700 bishops and priests, more than 2,000 members of the clergy, and hundreds of deacons. Thirty-eight ecumenical delegations attended, including representatives from the Patriarchate of Constantinople and the Greek Orthodox Patriarchate of Alexandria. Pope Leo XIV was visibly moved as he received the pallium and the Fisherman's Ring, two of the most significant symbols marking the beginning of a pontificate. The latter represents the bond between Christ and the Church, of which the pope is both shepherd and model. He then delivered his homily, in which he paid tribute to Pope Francis, saying, his death filled our hearts with sorrow.' Reflecting on the conclave that elected him as successor to Saint Peter, he noted how it responded to the questions and challenges of the modern age. In his homily, Pope Leo XIV once again called for peace, emphasising that achieving it requires 'a united Church". 'Brothers and sisters, I would like that our first great desire be for a united church, a sign of unity and communion, which becomes a leaven for a reconciled world," he said, in Italian. The pontiff's words, delivered in front of world political leaders, reaffirmed the role he envisions for the Vatican: as a space for dialogue and mediation. The Holy See confirmed that the pope will privately meet with Zelenskyy on Sunday afternoon.

AP Photo/Andrew Medichini What To Know According to the Vatican, some 200,000 people attended the mass in St. Peter's Square. World leaders in attendance included Vice President JD Vance, Secretary of State Marco Rubio, Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky. The pope was seen shaking hands with Zelensky, Vance, and other figures. In his sermon, the Pope called for "love and unity" within the church and a world where "peace reigns." "In this our time, we still see too much discord, too many wounds caused by hatred, violence, prejudice, the fear of difference, and an economic paradigm that exploits the Earth's resources and marginalizes the poorest," he said. He spoke about global conflicts in Gaza, Myanmar and Ukraine and said we must not forget those suffering in wars. "The martyred Ukraine is waiting for negotiations for a just and lasting peace to finally happen," he said. He also spoke about the need for a "coexistence of diversity." "This is the missionary spirit that must animate us, not closing ourselves off in our small groups, nor feeling superior to the world," he said. "We are called to offer God's love to everyone in order to achieve that university that does not cancel out differences, but values the personal history of each person and the social and religious culture of every people." Cardinal Luigi Tagle gave him the Fisherman's Ring with a design of St. Peter holding the keys to heaven, which marks the start of his papacy. He also received a liturgical vestment known as a pallium. This is a strip of lambswool which represents his role as a shepherd. Before speaking, Leo greeted those who had come to watch on his popemobile. What People Are Saying An attendee, Michelle from Germany, told the BBC: "I arrived yesterday in the morning and I'm leaving in a few hours, so I don't have much time. It's very crazy because there's so many people. I wanted to see the pope." Joe from Missouri told the outlet: "We're on vacation, but it's great timing. We're here to see the pope's inaugural mass. It's very special. I'm glad we came early." "He's gonna be a wonderful pope," he added. "I am not Catholic, but I grew up Catholic, but this is just inspiring no matter what denomination of Christian you are." What Happens Next Following the mass, Leo is expected to meet world leaders in a series of meetings at the Vatican.
