'Saturday Night Live 'recap: Host Jon Hamm tells Kieran Culkin 'Mad Men' is better than 'Succession'
Ahoy, it's SNL in Review. Let's be totally upfront here: tonight's host, Jon Hamm, has hits. "Jon Hamm's John Ham." "Ambiguously Gay Duo" (live-action). "A-holes: Pitch Meeting." "Trick or Treat." If we're being honest, the man has been in more classic moments on Saturday Night Live than several members of the Five-Timers Club. And yet, tonight will only be his fourth hosting gig, and his first in nearly 15 years. Like some stars in the SNL galaxy, he burned bright - three episodes in two years, essentially — then faded away. Okay, save his many, many cameo appearances. But still, one would've thought his chops had him on a Five-Timer trajectory. Maybe his somewhat bumpy post-Mad Men career dimmed his shine a bit. Or maybe he really loved that aughts era cast. Shrug emoji. But the man is back, courtesy of a new Apple+ show, Your Friends & Neighbors. I am joined again tonight by another bright star in the SNL universe, former cast member Gary Kroeger. He says: "I loved Mad Men. I was in advertising for 17 years after show business, and the circumstances explored in Mad Men still rang true. We used 'Draper-isms' in actual pitch meetings. Jon Hamm was spot-on perfection as the archetypal creative executive. And he has proven great versatility, especially with comedy since. He innately understands that comedy requires a serious frame of mind in order to work. I think he is brilliant on SNL, just as I thought on Curb. Jon Hamm playing 'Jon Hamm' belongs on a loop at the Smithsonian." Lizzo is back tonight as well — it's also her fourth appearance. Previously, she was the musical guest for Eddie Murphy, Austin Butler — and herself!Easter is the celebration of the risen Christ. Narration tells us the story of Jesus and the cleansing of the temple. Cue: Mikey Day as the son of God — as he turns the table over, everything freezes! And Donald Trump (James Austin Johnson) appears for a monologue about the past week. He holds court on his tariffs, his so-called 'four-dimensional chess.' The Founding Fathers cold open in January was set up like this, too. Playful moment alert: Johnson's Trump pointing out that Emil Wakim should be playing Jesus, but the show was more comfortable with Mikey Day and his blue eyes in the role. Later, he talks about Sarah Sherman's open mouth and the success of 'Miss Eggy' last week. Johnson's Trump, in all his malevolent chaos, is about to break the fourth wall and act like the show's own Zack Morris, an ability Kenan Thompson also apparently has. Generally, I think this works. Gary Kroeger thinks, 'SNL is handling our political landscape perfectly. Just as they always have. And they can't let up. Reality is producing comedy at breakneck speed, and SNL has no choice but to keep pace.' Springtime in New York City! It's 41 degrees and damp. Hamm discusses his previous appearances on the show, including his many cameos. Fourteen! He comments on the surprised audience reaction when he pops up on air. Playful moment alert: he references when monologues go flat, cameos come in handy. On cue, Kieran Culkin (in the audience last week) comes out for some banter. Hamm asserts that Mad Men is better than Succession and wants Culkin's Oscar. Paycheck to paycheck business news for normal people! Jon Hamm's anchor Kenneth bought his suit at Kohl's. To him and Ego Nwodim, this week's market dips are hard to follow — instead, they offer practical commentary. Kenneth is not worried about the bond market, for instance, because he does not know what that means. Go back to basics and use bar soap! Kenan Thompson's character has consumer tips. He is not eating Captain Crunch anymore. Instead, he's buying Sergeant Munch — lower rank, lower price. The "Side Hustle Minute" spotlights Funko dolls! Eva Clarkson, a councilman's relative, is missing. Police are serious about cracking the case and mention ordering pizza to settle in for the night at headquarters. Daniels (Hamm) is thrilled — beyond enthusiastic. He acts like a silly kid, and things spiral. This is fine, but it doesn't land the same as the frenetic videos set behind the scenes at 8H with the guys playing themselves. Former cast member Victoria Jackson says this is "hilarious. Very funny." Michael Longfellow is back in the slimy game show host role. Contestant Paul (Hamm) is very nervous about being here — what if he goes viral and ruins his life? Sure enough, he outs himself as racist. All of his answers are incredibly embarrassing, a total disaster. Ouch! Victoria Jackson shares this "had my husband laughing out loud. Very funny." In this White Lotus spoof, Trump is the despairing family patriarch, modeled after Jason Isaac's Timothy Ratliff. His wife is played by Chloe Fineman, channeling Parker Posey and her popular take on the North Carolina accent. Then the cameos begin. Scarlett Johansson returns as Ivanka (tapping into Piper Ratliff)! Beck Bennett as Putin! Alex Moffat! (Folks may recall I spoke with Alex about the possibility of him bringing the Trump brothers back to the show this season.) This is a little on the nose — it somewhat works for fans of the HBO show. Does it work as political satire? I guess. We get brief moments calling back this season's Thailand setting, grafted over familiar tropes about the Trump family and characters like Marco Rubio. Jon Hamm attempts an RFK Jr. impression. I don't know; the show could've spoofed White Lotus better. Last month, Lizzo released a disco-infused comeback single, "Still Bad," a track from her upcoming fifth album, Love in Real Life. Her shirt reads: "Tarrified." Tariffs! The Chinese Trade Minister Chen Biao (Yang) is back to discuss U.S.-China relations. This is his sixth appearance at the Update desk. He is working on a book, Peasant Elegy, in a funny dig at J.D. Vance. And makes a funny joke about giving Glenn Close an Oscar. Only 18 percent of young Americans are proud of this country and want to be patriotic. Emil Wakim is conflicted about being in the U.S. with an immigrant dad. He riffs on his interactions with the Uber Eats driver and our own hypocrisy. "I'm part of the problem," he admits. People aren't above capitalism just because they live in Brooklyn! "This is hell," he says — we have M&M stores next to churches. Jost ends the commentary by noting that he looks forward to reading the YouTube comments. I liked this! Dawn Altman (Sherman) is Jost's accountant. Next week is Tax Day, and everyone is nervous about the economy. Lots of Jost digs. I did not love this one, but it ends well — Sherman crashes her head through the Update backdrop, finding kidnapped women. Wow, three commentaries on Update tonight, all tied to the current political moment. Here's Gary Kroeger: "SNL always handles political satire with great aplomb. Always the right dose of commentary and humor. How could they possibly go too far when reality is already off the charts? And when Stephen Miller says that SNL's where comedy goes to die,' then you know you are in the right place! What a tired phrase that is — where comedy goes to die — and proof that this administration is as out of touch with issues as they are with the rotation of the earth. My hope is — and I'm pretty sure this will remain true — is that SNL puts their foot on the pedal before ever easing up." Side note: Michael Che has a beautiful singing voice. Friends are happy their kids are on a camping trip. Hamm and Yang play a gay couple who suddenly appear with a newborn — and want to be treated just like their straight friends, reacting incredulously to reasonable questions about the child's origins. 'The way people talk to gay people is crazy,' laments Yang, turning everything into a broadside about tolerance and society's prejudice against gay people. They are being ridiculous, even if their points about tokenism still carry water, refusing to answer anything. Lizzo cameos as the baby. This is a sequel sketch. Back in 2023, a group of friends on a ski trip discussed how a couple was trying to get pregnant. After one of the straight couples announces to the group that they are 'trying' to get pregnant, the gay couple, played by Yang and Adam Driver, make the exact same announcement. They are 'trying' for a baby as well — not by adoption, not by surrogacy, but naturally. "Don't make me love you, don't waste my time,' belts Lizzo. This new song reminds me of '80s Tina Turner, especially 'You're Simply The Best.' This one is great. If you are doing active fun in slow motion, that means it is time to get tested. Winning a carnival game, going to a folk show, and hanging out with interracial friends are also signs you are in a commercial Tropes from erectile dysfunction, diabetes, and depression ads are also called out. Very sharp. A new batch of employees are doing ice breakers. Leader Chris (Dismukes) wants everyone to share a fun fact about themselves. Most of them are normal… gardening, painting, competitive swimming, having a twin. Greg's fun fact is very dark and memorable: his mom killed his dad naked on TV! Susan (Ashley Padilla) is thrown by this, understandably, forgetting her own name and saying 'being a woman' was her fun fact. This sketch makes me want to stream classic Jackass! How about you? Vote please! Thoughts on Hamm's formal return as host? Guy's a pro. Thank you as always, Gary Kroeger. And happy birthday! Some of you lowly Coneheads may have news on an SNL spinoff launching in London. Kroeger shares, "To be honest, I thought SNL should have been British-cloned years ago. British humor is more subtle, which is how they can pull off over-the-top comedy and still keep it real. It's rooted in language and its nuances, which makes commentary feel more relevant. In short, I think I'll prefer a British SNL. As you know, I am a huge fan of our SNL, but my guess is that the British won't attempt to mimic; they will instead create their own with only the live element in common. In an exclusive interview with PEOPLE, the actor, 54, says he is excited to return to host the late-night series for the first time in over a decade on April 12. "It's funny. It's been 15 years since I hosted, so I've forgotten — Am I supposed to be nervous yet? I don't remember," he says. "I'm very much looking forward to it. It's a tremendous honor to be asked back," continues Hamm. "It's such a unique thing to do in our industry, and in television, and obviously, with the 50th anniversary being what it was, and I was a big part of that too, that was very cool." "I'm just so honored to be a part of that family, for sure," adds the Your Friends and Neighbors star. "It's really, really cool." "Most of the people who knew me before they knew me for Mad Men knew that was the predominant side of me. So Lorne gave me that opportunity, which led to 30 Rock, which led to Bridesmaids, which led to a lot of other gigs in the Tina Fey, Robert Carlock, Lorne Michaels universe," Hamm continued. "So I'll be forever grateful for that." The actor explained that amid the success of Mad Men — in which he portrayed Don Draper, the enigmatic creative director of a fictional New York City advertising agency in the 1960s — he "was offered a lot of roles that were a version of that character, where you had been smoking a cigarette and sort of brooding, looking out a window into the dark city of some kind of place." 'SNL50' live updates: Anniversary special red carpet start time, planned musical performances, former cast and more
What to know about 'SNL50: The Anniversary Special': The three-hour prime-time special is expected to be a star-studded and nostalgia-packed affair, with appearances by Five-Timers Club members and a handful of past hosts. Expect to see alumni from the cast, including Adam Sandler, Amy Poehler, Tracy Morgan and Will Ferrell, as well as celebrities including Adam Driver and Kim Kardashian. Miley Cyrus, Paul McCartney and a handful of other artists will perform. Tonight's event is the culmination of a weekend of anniversary programming dedicated to the beloved sketch comedy show, including 'SNL50: The Homecoming Concert,' which was streamed live from Radio City Music Hall, and a rebroadcast of the show's first episode, which was taped on Oct. 11, 1975, and aired again Saturday. Red carpet coverage kicks off at 7 p.m. ET on NBC and on the official social media accounts for 'SNL.' The special airs at 8 p.m. ET on NBC and Peacock. Tom Hanks ‘storms out' of SNL 50th anniversary concert
Tom Hanks and Rita Wilson 'stormed out' of a Saturday Night Live 50th anniversary event in a comedic bit that had the audience in stitches. The Hollywood couple left their seats and headed to the back of the auditorium when host Jimmy Fallon told the audience that the three-hour SNL concert would not be handing out any awards. Fallon said: 'Apparently, there's been some confusion. This is just a concert. We're not giving out any awards tonight. So I just want to make sure that everyone knows that.' At this stage, in a clip that's circulated online, both Hanks and Wilson could be seen jokingly walking out of the Radio City Music Hall venue in New York, with Wilson wagging her finger at the camera. 'Tom? Rita?' Fallon said, playing along, adding: 'We lost Tom Hanks and Rita. Sorry. It wasn't their fault.' Over the years, Hanks has hosted SNL 10 times through the years and made numerous cameos, most recently in December 2024. This has comfortably earned him a spot in the Five-Timers Club club, reserved for stars who have hosted the show five times or more. Other members include Bill Murray, Drew Barrymore, Melissa McCarthy and Dwayne Johnson. The star-studded event saw several key figures from the history of SNL grace the stage, with former cast members Amy Poehler, Eddie Murphy, Molly Shannon, Kristen Wiig, Adam Sandler, Will Ferrell, Maya Rudolph, Pete Davison and Tracy Morgan all participating. Elsewhere, Tina Fey, Will Forte, Kate McKinnon, Andy Sandberg, Seth Meyers, Kenan Thompson, Jason Sudeikis, Fred Armisen and Chris Rock also made appearances – but the omission of Bill Hader was not lost on the sketch show's fans, who begged for the Barry actor to return. The special also features celebrities who have previously graced the stage as guest hosts. These included Adam Driver, Ayo Edebiri, Dave Chappelle, John Mulaney, Kim Kardashian, Martin Short, Miley Cyrus, Paul McCartney, Paul Simon, Pedro Pascal, Peyton Manning, Quinta Brunson, Robert De Niro, Sabrina Carpenter, Scarlett Johansson, Steve Martin, Tom Hanks and Woody Harrelson. The first Saturday Night Live cast was known as the Not Ready for Prime Time Players and consisted of Chevy Chase, Gilda Radner, John Belushi, Laraine Newman, Dan Aykroyd, Garrett Morris and Jane Curtin. Radner and Belushi have since died. Aykroyd's absence from the list of returning cast members was unclear, though he posted enthusiastically about the 50th anniversary on social media last week. As part of its anniversary celebration, Peacock is streaming a four-part documentary series, SNL50: Beyond Saturday Night, about the show.
