Victor wins thriller between girls lax elites
Julia Bruno scored with 8.9 seconds left to give Victor a come from behind 11-10 win over Penfield Wednesday night on Five Mile Line Road.
The two teams entered the night with a combined 16-3 record and played like two favorites to win a sectional title. The largest lead of the game was two and the lacrosse was excellent.
After a 3-3 first half, each team doubled their score in the first six minutes of the third quarter. Whitey Reynolds and Jenna Capozzi each scored late in the third to give Penfield an 8-6 advantage heading to the fourth.
Bruno and McKenna Anderson erased that lead less than three minutes in the fourth quarter. From there, the top players took over.
Reynolds and Bruno exchanged goals exactly a minute apart to make it 9-9. Reynolds scored again 25 seconds later for a 10-9 Penfield lead, but Victor got a bit of luck to tie. Allie Pisano mishandled a pass and the ball rolled in front of her. As the Penfield defender raced forward to nab the loose ball, Pisano scooped it on the run and blew by the, now, out of position defender to tie the game again with just over three minutes to play.
Mia Finocchario made a point blank save for Victor with just over two minutes left to hold the tie. After a scoreless possession each way, Victor had the ball just behind midfield out of a time out with 20 seconds remaining.
A cross field clearing attempt right after the whistle was nearly intercepted by the Patriots, but Bruno grabbed the ball with inches to spare and suddenly had acres of space. Penfield never stepped up to stop the ball and Bruno walked right down main street for the winner. Victor won the ensuing faceoff to secure the victory.
Bruno finished with a game-high five goals for the Blue Devils. Pisano, Camryn Adrid and Morgan Livingston added two apiece.
Reynolds paced the Patriots with four goals and two assists. Capozzi had a five point game with two goals and three helpers. Emma Alexander also scored twice.
Victor has now won seven in a row and remain unbeaten in Section Five play. They improve to 9-1.
Penfield had a five game win streak snapped and fell to 8-3.
