Nose landing gear and tire broke off as Frontier Airlines flight from Orlando attempted landing, NTSB preliminary report says

A nose landing gear wheel and tire broke off and hit an engine and wing during a Frontier Airlines attempted landing in Puerto Rico last month, according to a preliminary report from the National Transportation Safety Board. On April 15, Frontier Flight 3506, an Airbus A321, was arriving from Orlando International Airport when its first landing attempt failed at Luis Munoz Marin International Airport in San Juan, Puerto Rico. According to the flight crew, the first officer was the pilot flying, and the captain was the pilot monitoring during the night flight. There were 228 passengers and seven crew members on board. When the plane was about 15 feet above the ground, the captain called for a go-around, instructing the first officer to abort the landing. The captain believed the aircraft was 'running out of flying speed quickly' so he took over and accelerated to circle the airport just as the plane touched down, according to the NTSB report. Data from the plane showed the wheels initially hit the ground at 2.2 times the force of gravity, greater than Frontier's 'hard landing' limit of 1.8 Gs. During the go-around, the pilots 'heard a loud bang coming from under the fuselage' and the first officer said that an engine failure was displayed on the electronic centralized aircraft monitor display, according to the NTSB. The captain asked for a sweep of the runway and metal and tire debris were found. Metal from the damaged nose landing gear was sucked into the plane's left engine and hit parts of the wing, the NTSB found. The plane flew near the air traffic control tower to check if all three landing gears were down, and a controller reported they all appeared to be intact. The plane then landed normally and the passengers safely evacuated by air stairs. The preliminary NTSB report does not determine what caused the accident, which will be outlined in a final report that usually takes about a year.

Frontier Airlines flight makes terrifying hard landing in Puerto Rico

A Frontiers Airlines flight from Florida to Puerto Rico made three attempts at landing before finally touching down hard to the relief of frightened passengers. Videos shot aboard Flight 3506 Tuesday night shows children crying and adult passengers phoning loved ones as the Airbus A321 hit the ground so hard its landing gear broke, according to ABC News. Other planes were delayed or rerouted while the troubled flight circled over Luis Marin International Airport before apparently leaving debris in its wake after hitting the runway. Audio obtained by ABC News recorded a controller explaining to another crew that the pilot of Flight 3506 reported an emergency situation prior to its sticky landing. 'The last aircraft that tried to land in San Juan hit the surface too hard and apparently lost some things on the runway,' the controller said. Passenger Jeffrey Cerda expressed gratitude for finally landing in Puerto Rico around 10 p.m. 'Being able to get off that plane, touch the ground, and feel safe is a feeling I can't explain,' he wrote on Instagram. 'What I experienced on that plane trying to land was really intense. I even called my family while still in the air, not knowing if I'd make it out safely, to tell them what was happening and try to stay calm.' Spanish language station WAPA reported that a 'young' co-pilot is believed to have been operating the plane when things went awry and that the pilot is to thank for getting the situation under control. An aviation investigator reportedly said the aircraft wasn't stabilized for the descent, which cause one of its wheels to break and send fragments into an engine. Federal Aviation officials are investigating the incident. 'On the evening of April 15, Flight 3506 from Orlando to San Juan experienced a hard landing upon arrival,' the airline said in a statement. 'The aircraft landed safely and there were no injuries to the passengers or crew.' Business Insider said Frontier offered $500 vouchers to the passengers who endured Tuesday's bumpy landing.

Frontier Airlines offers $500 vouchers and refunds to passengers after a 'hard landing' in Puerto Rico

A Frontier Airlines plane appeared to lose a wheel after a "hard landing" in San Juan on Tuesday. One passenger told a Puerto Rican newspaper they were left "traumatized" by the incident. Frontier said it had offered passengers $500 vouchers and refunds for the flight. Frontier Airlines said it had offered $500 vouchers and refunds to passengers following what it called a "hard landing" in Puerto Rico on Tuesday night. Flight 3506 from Orlando briefly touched down at San Juan's Luis Muñoz Marín International Airport before pilots performed a go-around due to an apparent mechanical issue. Flight tracking data showed that the two-year-old Airbus A321neo then circled over San Juan several times before finally landing. It returned for a second approach and landed safely at about 10:20 p.m. local time, the Federal Aviation Administration said in a statement. "Passengers deplaned on the taxiway and were bused to the terminal," the FAA added. Frontier said in a statement there were no injuries to passengers or crew, and that the incident was under investigation. Video circulating on social media appeared to show a fire around the plane's wing as it came into land. An image of the aircraft on the tarmac also appears to show it missing a nose wheel. "The problem was when we landed. When the pilot went to land, the drop was dramatic," Melani González Wharton, who said she was a passenger on the flight, told Puerto Rican newspaper El Nuevo Día. "When we touched down, it was so strong that we jumped," she said. "The tire at the front of the plane broke. I don't know if the tire hit the left engine, which was where I was sitting. It sparked, and fire started to come out." González Wharton added: "Inside, we were crying, children were shouting, people were praying. It was an unforgettable, horrible experience. I'm traumatized." Read the original article on Business Insider

FAA investigating after Frontier Airlines hard landing in Puerto Rico

The Federal Aviation Administration and National Transportation Safety Board are investigating after a Frontier Airlines flight made a hard landing at Luis Marin International Airport in San Juan, Puerto Rico, on Tuesday. Flight 3506, an Airbus A321, was arriving from Orlando International Airport when its first landing attempt failed. Audio from the website Broadcast includes air traffic controllers alerting pilots of 'debris on the runway' after an 'aircraft landed a bit harsh.' 'The last aircraft that tried to land in San Juan hit the surface too hard and apparently (it) lost some things in the runway,' the controller explained to another pilot. 'He has declared an emergency.' Flight 3506 circled the airport and made two more attempts at landing, successfully touching down at 10:20 p.m. local time. A number of other incoming planes had to land at other airports while Luis Marin International was closed. Video from a passenger on the plane showed people onboard cheering as it finally landed. 'It was truly terrible. To fear for your life and not know what was going to happen, to not know if you were going to land safely or how everything was going to end,' Jeffrey Cerda said in a video he posted to Instagram. 'The accidents happen, and we don't know when or how they'll happen. They're accidents and they happen the moment we least expect it.' Passengers were deplaned on the taxiway and bussed to a terminal. 'The aircraft landed safely and there were no injuries to the passengers or crew,' Frontier Airlines said in a statement. 'The incident is under investigation.' CNN's Pete Muntean, Martin Goillandeau, Caroll Alvarado and David Williams contributed to this report
