Heidelberg unveils Cartonmaster CX 145 press for folding carton printing

Heidelberger Druckmaschinen (Heidelberg) has announced the addition of the Cartonmaster CX 145, a very large format sheet-fed offset press, to its packaging portfolio. This introduction reflects the ongoing growth in the packaging industry, particularly in long-run folding carton printing for food, beverage, and consumer goods. The Cartonmaster CX 145, which measures 105cm by 145cm, is based on the Roland Evolution 900 and will be integrated into Heidelberg's digital ecosystem. The press will be compatible with the Prinect workflow, as well as solutions from third-party providers, allowing customers to access performance data through the Heidelberg Customer Portal. Heidelberg chief technology and sales officer David Schmedding said: 'Our new Cartonmaster CX 145 makes Heidelberg a full-range provider for folding carton printing.' The offering includes not only the press itself but also sales, installation, training, and ongoing support, including service and consumables, stated the company. Orders for the Cartonmaster CX 145 are now being accepted, with the first installation scheduled for 2026, followed by a global rollout. Heidelberg anticipates strong demand from markets in North America, Europe, and China. Heidelberg CEO Jurgen Otto said: 'Adding the Cartonmaster CX 145 to our portfolio is further proof of our credentials as a system integrator for the end-to-end production of folding cartons.' The company offers a range of products for folding carton printing, including Speedmaster presses in various configurations, from 50cm by 70cm to 70cm by 100cm, as well as the new 'Peak Performance' generation of the Speedmaster XL 106. Heidelberg says that the Cartonmaster CX 145 bridges the capacity between its existing Speedmaster series and the Boardmaster. In May 2024, Flint Group, a provider of printing and packaging inks and coatings, teamed up with Heidelberg Japan KK for product distribution in Japan. Flint Group commits to NC-free ink for flexible packaging recycling in Europe

Flint Group, a supplier of inks and coatings for the print and packaging industry, has reaffirmed its commitment to developing nitrocellulose-free (NC-free) ink systems, aiming to enhance the recyclability of flexible packaging in Europe. The move aligns with the EU's updated Packaging and Packaging Waste Regulation (PPWR), which mandates that all packaging must be 100% recyclable by 2030. The legislation also emphasises the need for seamless integration of all components of the packaging value chain with recycling infrastructure. Flint Group Europe flexible packaging product manager Stephen Butler said: 'We already have market-proven PU [polyurethane]-based products delivering outstanding results for our customers. Our comprehensive portfolio of NC-free inks is successfully used in real production environments, producing consistent high-quality print at high speeds. 'This proves that flexible packaging printers don't need to compromise performance for sustainability. 'Our focus remains on delivering sustainable, regulatory-compliant technologies that anticipate future needs as regulations continue to evolve. By switching to our proven PU-based inks, printers aren't just meeting compliance requirements - they're actively contributing to more effective and economically viable recycling systems.' Flint Group recently explained how traditional NC-based inks may break down during mechanical recycling, possibly leading to the contamination of recycled materials. The company offers VertixCode (flexo) and MatrixCode (gravure) inks in PU-based, NC-free, and traditional NC formulations. These inks are suitable for surface, reverse, and lamination printing, delivering strong colours and high-opacity whites for flexible packaging. Flint Group technology and product management vice-president Paul Winstanley said: 'The recycling infrastructure represents a significant investment that must function efficiently to achieve the circularity goals of initiatives such as PPWR, and whilst NC-based printing inks are recyclable, NC-free solutions offer improved compatibility with the mechanical recycling process. 'Additionally, under PPWR, producers - including packaging printers - are subject to extended producer responsibility (EPR) schemes, which impose fees based on how easily their packaging materials can be recycled. 'Therefore, the ink industry is proactively developing new solutions to improve the ability to recycle packaging materials.' Earlier this month, Flint Group opened a distribution hub in Montreal, Québec, to better serve its label and narrow web customers in Canada. Flint Group opens distribution facility in Montreal, Canada

Flint Group, a manufacturer of inks and coatings for the printing and packaging sectors, has opened a new distribution centre in Montreal, Québec, to expand its support for label and narrow web clients in Canada. With immediate effect, the facility will store and distribute Flint Group's water-based, UV-curable, and UV LED dual-curing inks, alongside coatings for narrow web applications, the company said. Previously, customers in Québec depended on Flint Group's Toronto facility for their ink supplies. With this new facility, Flint has not only bolstered its position in the domestic sector, but also doubled its reach in Eastern Canada. The new location is anticipated to expedite delivery times and also give its customers better access in the region. Flint Group North America sales and service vice-president Nicki Kerrigan said: 'This expansion underscores Flint Group's commitment to providing enhanced local service and support for customers in the Montreal and Québec region. 'The new facility will ensure customers benefit from reduced delivery times and easier access to high-quality inks and coatings - reinforcing our vision of bringing colour to the world by positioning our products closer to the printers and converters who use them." In June last year, Flint Group secured B grades in Climate Change and Water Security disclosures from CDP, a non-profit organisation that assesses corporate environmental transparency.
