Water survey analyzing flood risks in Central Illinois counties
CENTRAL ILLINOIS (WCIA) — The Illinois State Water Survey is continuing data development to analyze flood risks in six Central Illinois counties. The data development conducted by ISWS is for the Embarras River watershed, part of a multi-phase study to help local communities identify areas of high flood risk for flood mitigation planning. Flood risks are to be analyzed in the following counties: Clark Coles Crawford Cumberland Jasper Lawrence Illinois bill strengthening rules on gun storage heads to Pritzker's desk Results from this new study will be used to update the Federal Emergency Management Agency's Flood Insurance Rate Maps and Flood Insurance Studies report. This usually depicts floodplains, including the 1-percent-annual-chance (100-year) and 0.2-percent-annual-chance (500-year) flood hazard areas. ISWS is working on this project in conjunction with the Illinois Department of Natural Resources Office of Water Resources and FEMA. Additionally, the second phase will study the tributary streams within the Embarras River watershed; starting with data collection, this phase began this month and will finish during the summer. The data collection process will involve surveyors conducting detailed channel and bridge surveys of the tributaries in the following counties and their respective communities: Coles County and Cumberland County (Trilla) Clark County (Casey) Jasper County (Newton and Ste. Marie) Lawrence County (Bridgeport and Summer) IDPH issues health warning on wildfire smoke Additionally, some of the survey work will be done in the rural areas of each county. Residents are asked to be aware of the periodic presence of survey crews in the area, and the surveys will be completed as stream conditions and weather allow. In the spring of 2024, the first phase of this project started with data collection on the Embarras River's mainstem. Copyright 2025 Nexstar Media, Inc. All rights reserved. Kokua Line: Is hardship grounds for flood map appeal?
Question : Regarding Oahu's new flood map, the city says you can appeal if your property is placed in a high-risk zone and you have to get flood insurance because of that. Is hardship a grounds for appeal ? Answer : No. 'An appeal is a formal written objection to the addition / modification of Base Flood Elevations /Flood Depths, Special Flood Hazard Area boundaries, Zone designations, or regulatory floodway boundaries depicted on the preliminary (Flood Insurance Rate Maps ). An appeal must be accompanied by data and documentation, certified by a registered professional engineer or licensed land surveyor, indicating how the proposed new or modified flood hazard information shown on the preliminary FIRMs is scientifically or technically incorrect, ' according to the city website explaining the Federal Emergency Management Agency's update of the map. As Kokua Line reported in October (), FEMA spent several years analyzing flood risks along Oahu streams to update the FIRMs, including in areas that had never been flood-mapped before. As a result, thousands of Oahu properties previously noted as having an undetermined flood risk are designated on the preliminary FIRMs as being in Special Flood Hazard Areas. Owners of those properties may have to buy flood insurance if they have a federally backed loan or mortgage on the property, and comply with local laws regarding construction and development in flood hazard areas. Before the process to finalize the preliminary FIRMS begins, there will be a 90-day public appeal and comment period, which starts Thursday and runs through June 10. Owners can appeal changes to their property's flood-risk designation, and the public can submit comments and ask questions. For more information, including instructions on filing an appeal, go to. The site also has a link to the flood map so owners can check their property's current and proposed status. The FIRMs are not expected to be finalized until spring 2026, after FEMA addresses all appeals, issues a letter of final determination and oversees a six-month adoption /compliance period. At the end of that period, 'the FIRMs become effective, along with all regulatory and flood insurance requirements, ' the website says. Don 't miss out on what 's happening ! A : Yes, the Hawaii license plate with a shaka decal is an organization license plate, and it is available for purchase. It's not the default alternative during a shortage of standard license plates because it costs more than a standard license plate and more than the organization license plate the Division of Motor Vehicles is using as the default alternative until the supply of standard plates is replenished. The default is the American United 9 /11 decal license plate because it costs the same as a plain license plate : $5.50 upon issuance, with no additional annual fee. By contrast, the Project Shaka license plate costs $30.50 initially and $25 for annual renewal ; $20 of each purchase (issuance and renewal ) goes to the nonprofit ID8 'to fund its efforts to help curb road rage incidents on O 'ahu, ' according to a city news release in May, when the shaka decal plate first became available. The decal features Hawaii's universal gesture of goodwill. As Kokua Line has previously reported, license plates spelling 'Hawai 'i ' with an okina as required by a state law approved in 2024 are not yet widely available ; the supply is expected to be fully restocked by May.

Residents can now comment on safety flooding measures in Trinity County
TRINITY COUNTY, Texas (KETK) — Trinity County suffered from excessive flooding in 2024, which left most of the county underwater. Residents can now comment or appeal the 2025 updated safety flooding measures. In May, residents were displaced from their homes and property was destroyed. Water levels were high and several residents needed to be evacuated. 'We've never had 24 inches of rain in two days before,' Trinity County Sheriff Wallace said. Preliminary flood risk information and updated Flood Insurance Rate Maps are available for the public to review provided by FEMA, local and state officials. Preliminary data provides the public an early look at their home or community's projected risk to flood hazards. The community has reviewed the maps but before they are finalized, residents will have 90 days to appeal or comment. To submit an appeal, residents must include technical information such as hydraulic or hydrologic data to support their claim. Hydrologic data is the study or science of transforming rainfall amount into quantity of runoff, while hydraulic data is the study or science of the motion of liquids in relation to disciplines such as fluid mechanics and fluid dynamics.
