Public input needed for flooding issues in Alton
ALTON, Ill. – The construction of a permanent concrete flood wall has been proposed in downtown Alton on the north side of Broadway from William Street to Piasa Street.
Alton is seeking public input before presenting the project to City Council.
In 2023, the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers completed a Flood Risk Reduction Study describing several flood mitigation options, including the dry floodproofing of affected buildings and various flood walls.
The report included pricing for several different wall options ranging from $12 to $94 million.

Alton has applied for and been approved for a grant from FEMA for $2.9 million, with a pledge for a $3 million match from the city's TIF1 district to complete the wall project.
The city of Alton cordially invites the public to an open house meeting on the planned flood mitigation improvements within the downtown district.
The purpose of the open house is to provide citizens with updated information regarding the project scope and proposed timeline.
