Florence Police Department Dive Team reminds boaters of safety this Memorial Day weekend

FLORENCE, Ala. (WHNT) — The Florence Police Department took to social media to remind boaters of the importance of safety on the water ahead of the holiday weekend. FPD's Dive Team provided some tips to help boaters enjoy their time on the lake while also being safe: Wear a Properly Fitted Lifejacket (PFD): Make sure it fits your size and weight for maximum safety. Stay Sober: If you're operating a vessel, please refrain from consuming alcohol. Your safety and the safety of others depend on it! Stay Aware of the Weather: Always monitor changing weather conditions while out on the water. Have a Plan: Let someone know where you're launching and your expected return time. Keep those emergency numbers handy! Use Safety/Kill Switch Lanyards: This is especially important for personal watercraft and wherever else required. Be Prepared: Always carry a fire extinguisher, safety/medical kit, phone chargers, signaling devices, and extra PFDs. Follow Navigation Rules: Stay informed about boating regulations and follow them closely. The same rule of 'Stay Sober' applies to drivers as well. 'It's a it's a small choice, but that small choice is massive consequences, and those massive consequences can be losing your life or taking the life of someone else,' Sergeant Antonio Shorter with the Huntsville Police Department said. 8. Know Your Vessel: Understand how your boat operates, including the effects of speed, overloading, and water conditions. Copyright 2025 Nexstar Media, Inc. All rights reserved.
