March Madness: Analyzing Florida-Maryland matchup in 2025 NCAA Tournament Sweet 16

March Madness: Analyzing Florida-Maryland matchup in 2025 NCAA Tournament Sweet 16 The 2025 NCAA Tournament Sweet 16 starts on Thursday, and included on the schedule is the matchup between the top-seeded Florida Gators and fourth-seeded Maryland Terrapins. The two West Region opponents will face off at the Chase Center in San Francisco to see who gets to advance to the Elite 8. Florida has won seven straight games and an SEC Tournament trophy coming into play, having also beaten the 16th-seeded Norfolk State Spartans and eighth-seeded UConn Huskies in the first two rounds. Marlyland fell short in the Big Ten Tournament but beat the 13th-seeded Grand Canyon State Lopes and 12th-seeded Colorado State Rams, respectively, to earn a chance to take down the Orange and Blue. The morning prior to the big game, USA TODAY Sports writer Eddie Timanus provided his analysis of Thursday's Sweet 16 lineup. Here is what he had to offer on the Gators-Terps matchup. "For what it's worth, this pairing guarantees there will be a team with a reptilian mascot in the round of eight. The Gators have won 14 of their last 15, a run that includes the SEC tournament title, though they had to work harder than the other top seeds in the second round to dispatch two-time defending champ Connecticut. "The Terrapins handled all challengers not from the state of Michigan down the stretch but will need to be at their best here to keep that streak going. Florida has a number of scoring options in its deep backcourt, but the ball will usually be in the hands of Walter Clayton Jr. when a big bucket is needed. The same is true of Maryland big man Derik Queen, owner of the tournament's first and thus far only buzzer-beater. F "Fellow Terrapins Ja'Kobi Gillespie and Rodney Rice can get hot from the 3-point arc, but things get dicey for Maryland should any starter encounter foul trouble. The Terps have also struggled on the glass, and the Gators enjoy a rebounding margin of plus-8 per game with Alex Condon and Reuben Chinyelu leading the way." How to watch Florida-Maryland in Sweet 16 The No. 1 Florida Gators face off against the No. 4 Maryland Terrapins in the Sweet 16 on Thursday, March 27. That game will be played in San Francisco, California, with tipoff slated for 7:39 p.m. ET. The game will be broadcast on TBS. Can Florida basketball keep the momentum going against Maryland in the Sweet 16?

Can Florida basketball keep the momentum going against Maryland in the Sweet 16? If you didn't believe in Florida basketball before Sunday, you do now. It wasn't just that the Gators beat UConn — they ended a dynasty. Down late. Off rhythm. Outplayed for most of the second half. And still, Florida found a way. Walter Clayton Jr. found a way. And now, the Gators are back in the Sweet 16 for the first time since 2017. There was a moment in the second half against the Huskies when it looked like Florida might fold. UConn, the defending champs, had seized control. The Gators couldn't buy a bucket. Then, Clayton flipped the switch. The All-American scored 13 of his 23 points in the final eight minutes, including two ice-cold threes from the right wing that turned the game upside down. His performance, along with big plays from Will Richard and Thomas Haugh down the stretch, sealed a 77-75 win that ended UConn's pursuit of a third straight national title. Head coach Todd Golden called it a "program win". And he's right. He's built this team piece by piece, and now it's paying off. Now, what's Florida's reward for making it past the Round of 32? A Thursday night date in San Francisco with fourth-seeded Maryland, a group that just won its own March Madness thriller on a buzzer-beater against Colorado State. Down one with 3.6 seconds left, Derik Queen took a high-arching fadeaway off the glass as the horn sounded to give the Terrapins a Sweet 16 bid. Thursday night's game is all about contrasting styles. Florida wants to run, get out in space and score in bunches. They're deep, athletic and play faster than anyone Maryland has seen. But what do the Terrapins do? They slow their opponents down. Maryland isn't deep like Florida, but their starting five is tough, experienced and well-coached. It won't be easy, but Florida is the favorite. Not by a whole lot, though. The Gators didn't play their best game against UConn — and they still won. That's what should concern Maryland. If Clayton clicks from the jump and if the supporting cast can contribute, this is a game that the Orange and Blue should win. But March doesn't do "should". It does wild finishes. Fadeaway game-winners. Late threes. Bench players stepping into spotlight moments. Maryland has seen it. Florida just survived it. Now they both step into the storm, and only one walks out still dancing. How to watch Florida-Maryland The No. 1 Florida Gators face off against the No. 4 Maryland Terrapins in the Sweet 16 on Thursday, March 27. Where USA TODAY Sports ranks Florida basketball in their reseed heading into the Sweet 16

Where USA TODAY Sports ranks Florida basketball in their reseed heading into the Sweet 16 The Florida Gators are heading to the Sweet 16 for the first time since 2017 after wins against Norfolk State and the defending champion UConn Huskies. Now, the Gators have another tough task as they face the Maryland Terrapins, who are riding high off a game-winning shot against Colorado State that snuck them past the round of 32. In USA TODAY Sports' updated reseeding heading into the Sweet 16, Florida basketball earned the No. 1 overall spot, ahead of the Duke Blue Devils and Houston Cougars. The Gators are now among the most talked-about teams remaining in the NCAA Tournament with their ability to show resilience and determination, as displayed in their round of 32 game against the Huskies. As the Sweet 16 kicks off in a couple of days, Florida will face another major test in its quest for a Final Four appearance. But for now, the Gators are exactly where they want to be–on a roll, gaining national respect and at the top of USA TODAY Sports' Sweet 16 rankings. This is everything USA TODAY Sports writer Eddie Timanus had to say about Florida. What USA TODAY Sports said about the Gators "Our expert (snort) bracket has the Gators winning the whole thing. We'll stick to that, though they needed everything in the tank to get past two-time defending champ Connecticut in the second round. Now that they've made it to San Francisco, they match up favorably with the rest of the teams in the region."
