Joley Mitchell homers twice, No. 6 Texas beats No. 3 Florida in WCWS opener
Joley Mitchell hit a pair of solo home runs and Teagan Kavan threw a two-hit, complete-game shutout as sixth-seeded Texas beat third-seeded Florida 3-0 in the opening round of the Women's College World Series on Thursday in Oklahoma City. Texas will take on the winner of Thursday's Oklahoma-Tennessee matchup on Saturday. Florida will play the Oklahoma-Tennessee loser in an elimination game on Friday. Mitchell got the scoring started with a leadoff homer in the top of the second inning off Keagan Rothrock, driving a 2-2 offering out to left. Mitchell then blasted Rothrock's 2-1 pitch out to right-center to kick off the sixth, with Gators' center fielder Kendra Falby just missing a home-run-saving catch. It was Mitchell's first multi-home run game of the season and the 15th and 16th of the season for the graduate student. The next batter, Katie Stewart, chased Rothrock (16-7) with a line-drive homer to right to make it 3-0. Florida didn't have a hit until Korbe Otis' infield single with two outs in the fourth. Taylor Shumaker beat out a slow roller to third with one out in the sixth for the second hit. Kavan (25-5) created plenty of soft contact, with just one strikeout and two walks. --Field Level Media

Where does Florida softball rank in national polls following its SEC series win over Alabama?
A certain vibe returned to Katie Seashole Pressly Stadium last weekend for Florida softball. It was a swagger missing for weeks from the Gators — a feeling that this team could truly contend for a national championship. Advertisement UF took two of three from Alabama Thursday-Saturday. The series began as badly as possible for the team as ace Keagan Rothrock allowed seven runs in the first inning. The No. 15/20 Crimson Tide ultimately won 7-4. Florida bounced back on Friday with a dominant 12-4 run-rule victory behind Taylor Shumaker's six RBIs and two home runs. Saturday was an old school rock fight that saw the Gators come back from a 1-0 and 3-2 deficit to win 4-3 on a walk-off hit from Korbe Otis. The series win helped the Gators in the national polls this week. They moved up one spot to No. 6 in Softball. That puts them behind Tennessee, Texas A&M, Texas, Oklahoma and Oregon. The National Fastpitch Coaches Association (NFCA) has Florida at No. 8 – same as last week. That poll ranks Florida State and UCLA higher. Softball America places UF at 8, with FSU and Arkansas higher. Same with D1 Softball. Advertisement No. 6/8 Florida hosts USF Wednesday at 6 p.m. and travels to LSU Saturday-Monday. The series with the No. 10 Tigers will be critical for potential Super Regional hosting. Where does Florida softball rank in the polls this week? Mia Williams shines and other takeaways from Florida softball Gainesville Regional win over Mercer
Florida softball began the NCAA Gainesville Regional with a solid all-around effort, beating Mercer 8-0 at Katie Seashole Presley Stadium. Junior catcher Jocelyn Erickson delivered the walk-off RBI single with the bases loaded in the bottom of the fifth, clinching the run-rule win. Advertisement Ava Brown (11-3) pitched 2 1/3 innings of scoreless relief of starter Kara Hammock to pick up her 11th win of the season. "Very efficient offensive day," Florida softball coach Tim Walton said. "Defensively made some really nice plays. Ava did a really job in relief, I thought Kara did a good job in the start and had a quality go for us." The Florida Gators (44-14) advanced to play Florida Atlantic on Saturday (noon, TV TBD) in the winner's bracket, The Owls beat Georgia Tech 5-4 in eight innings on a walk-off RBI single by Kiley Shelton, who is the younger sister of Florida baseball shortstop Colby Shelton. The No. 3 national seed Gators are seeking their 13th CWS appearance in 19 seasons under Walton. Advertisement Here are three takeaways from UF's win over Mercer: Mia Williams sparks Florida softball with big day at the plate Williams went 2-for-2 with two doubles and 3 RBIs to help spark the offense as she's continued her slugging sophomore season. Williams, the daughter of former Gator and NBA great Jason Williams, has 19 home runs and 10 doubles on the season. "My mindset coming into this season was completely different," Williams said. "Last year I was trying to do a lot, trying to press and this year it's just having trust in myself and my teammates and more trust in my coaches, too." Taylor Shumaker launches another homer for Florida softball After Kenda Falby walked to lead off the third inning, Shumaker followed with her 19th homer of the season, launching a 2-1 pitch from Mercer starter Hannah Pitts over the wall in right field. Shumaker's home run, which ties the program's freshman home run record first set by Brittany Schutte in 2010, started a five-run rally in the third inning that gave the Gators an early 5-0 lead. Advertisement "I never am looking to really ever hit a home run," Shumaker said. "I don't think that's the kind of hitter that I am. I did know my team needed me to do something whether it was a single, a double, putting the ball in play hard just so we could try to get a little more momentum." Ava Brown shuts the door in relief for Florida softball After Hammock lasted 2 2/3 innings, walking three batters and hitting another, Walton turned to Brown with the bases loaded and two outs. Brown got a fly out to end the third inning and pitched the rest of the game, retiring six of the eight batters she faced. She allowed two hits with no walks and two strikeouts.
