MLB brings never before seen swing rule experiment to Florida League in major shift (Image Source: Getty Images) Major League Baseball is experimenting. Beginning Tuesday, the league will experiment with a new method of determining checked swings via technology. The Low-A Florida State League will see the test take place. The aim is to make checked-swing calls fairer and more accurate. The system initially was tested in the Arizona Fall League and is now set for further evaluation. If successful, MLB could implement it in higher-level games someday. MLB tests new swing rule with technology in Florida State League There is not an official rule in the MLB rule book that specifically declares a checked swing. Umpires used to make a call based on whether the wrist of the hitter moved or if the bat passed in front of home plate. Those old methods are not always equitable or easy to call. Now, MLB hopes to attempt using a 45-degree angle to help make things more clear. The bat needs to cross a line that is parallel to the foul lines at first and third base. If the bat does cross the line, it is a swing. This rule allows batters more leeway, which can prevent them from being called out on pitches that are close. MLB hopes this will reduce strikeouts, which have increased in recent years. Low-A teams led by managers like Dave Anderson will get one wrong challenge Florida State League teams will be permitted to challenge checked-swing rulings via this new technology. One time, each team has the opportunity to be incorrect. If they challenge successfully, however, they can continue. Like with the Automated Ball Strike (ABS) system, the challenge has to occur with urgency nearly immediately following the pitch. After the challenge is made, the outcome will appear on the video board at the stadium for all to see. This makes things more transparent and easier to comprehend. The Florida State League has been used by MLB to experiment with new rules in the past. This league was the first to experiment with the ABS and change rules. If this checked-swing system proves effective, it may soon be implemented in other levels of the minors or potentially in the majors. A right-hander who turns 24 on April 17, Allan allowed two hits and two walks. He threw 28 of 44 pitches for strikes.

A right-hander who turns 24 on April 17, Allan allowed two hits and two walks. He threw 28 of 44 pitches for strikes. Advertisement Allan was selected by the Mets in the third round of the 2019 amateur draft with the 89th overall pick out of Seminole High School in Sanford, Florida, and signed for a $2.5 million bonus. He made five starts and one relief appearance that year for the Gulf Coast League Mets and Class A Brooklyn but hadn't pitched since Aug. 31, 2019. The 2020 minor league season was canceled because of the coronavirus pandemic and Allan had Tommy John surgery on May 14, 2021. An ex-minor league catcher was accused of trying to lose on purpose. He says he didn't tip pitches
A former minor league catcher in the Minnesota Twins organization who was released last year, reportedly because he tried to make sure his team would lose so the season would end, denied the allegation in an interview with The Athletic and said he didn't tip any pitches to his opponents. Derek Bender, who made his professional debut last year with the Fort Myers Mighty Mussels was accused of telling opposing hitters the specific pitches that were being thrown during a game on Sept. 6 that eliminated Minnesota's Class-A affiliate from contention for the Florida State League playoffs. ESPN, citing unnamed sources, reported then that Fort Myers coaches were informed after the game by their opponent, the Lakeland Flying Tigers, a farm club for Detroit. 'I'll live with this until the day I die. I never gave pitches away,' Bender told The Athletic for a story published on Thursday. 'I never tried to give the opposing team an advantage against my own team.' Major League Baseball has been investigating the situation, according to The Athletic. After Bender, a sixth-round draft pick in 2024 out of Coastal Carolina, was released by the Twins on Sept. 12, ESPN in its report said Bender had told teammates he wanted the season to be over. Bender told The Athletic he was exhausted at that point of the year but that he was joking about tanking to try to ensure defeat. 'A lot of us are coming off of college seasons, coming off of a pretty grueling summer schedule,' Bender said in the interview. 'Then you get there and you're hitting .200, you're facing some of the best stuff consistently you've ever seen. You're sinking or swimming, and you're pretty close to sinking. The conversations are that everybody's ready to go home.' ___
