Fond du Lac apartment fire quickly extinguished, was caused by unattended cooking
FOND DU LAC – A stovetop fire at an apartment at 405 N. Peters Ave. is a reminder to never leave cooking unattended. Fond du Lac Fire Rescue Department was dispatched to the fire at 5:37 p.m. Wednesday. When crews arrived, the fire was already extinguished because the fire had been put out by two FireStop Rangehood Fire Suppressors, which are small canisters installed above the stove and activated when fire is present. They release an extinguishing agent to suppress the fire. As a result of the fire being extinguished quickly, the department said in a news release that damage was contained to the stove and cabinets above the stove. Fire crews checked for extension and cleared the apartment of smoke. The apartment was found to have no working smoke detectors, so the fire department installed two new ones in the apartment. Smoke detectors are needed on every floor at a minimum and should be in every bedroom, the department said. They also should be tested regularly to make sure they are still functioning properly.
