East Village Fong's location opening April 1
Fong's Pizza, an iconic Des Moines restaurant, is set to reopen in its brand new space at the former Peace Tree location in the East Village. Driving the news: The Asian-inspired fusion restaurant is opening April 1, complete with its well-known items like crab rangoon pizza ($18 for 10") and Chinese cheesesticks ($11) — but expect some new foods as well. Entrees include a new custom option where people can pick a base like fried rice, vegetables or noodles and top it with a protein of their choice, like sesame chicken ($13) and beef and broccoli ($14). Kamikaze shots are also back, along with popular Tiki drinks. But the menu also features a section of NA mocktails, including daiquiris and palomas. Plus: The inside is also redone, including a 70-foot dragon from the former Spaghetti Works restaurant, a new wrap-around bar and roof tiles from a former Chinese restaurant. What's next: The former Fong's space will be rebranded into "The Empire" — and will serve comfort food and American beers, WHO-13 reports. If you go: 11am-11pm, Sunday-Thursday; 11am-late in the evening depending on demand, Friday-Saturday. 317 E. Court Ave., Des Moines.

Fong's Pizza closes 4th street location ahead of move
DES MOINES, Iowa — Sunday March 9th was Fong's Pizza's 4th street location's last day open. In February the owners of Fong's announced they were moving to East Village. The iconic downtown Des Moines Restaurant will move to the East Village Neighborhood filling the space that Peace Tree Brewing used to have. The community has been largely supportive of the move. Home Expo helps buyers support local businesses Dennis Epps, the Co-owner of Fong's Pizza and Executive Chef, said that leaving the 4th street location is bitter sweet. 'It's bittersweet, you know, Fourth Street is, it's a unique little little neighborhood. A little area.- You know, I've I've lived down here, you know, for 20, 25 years. So for me, this is, you know, my neighborhood. But to to say it's nostalgia it's tough. But I also know I've been over at the new place every day getting it ready and it's it's going to be exciting.' Epps said. Fong's Pizza's new location will feature patio space and an expanded menu. The new location is expected to open at the end of the month. Copyright 2025 Nexstar Media, Inc. 'The Empire' set to takeover Fong's current location
DES MOINES, Iowa — Fong's Pizza has announced the new resident for their restaurant in downtown Des Moines, and it's got quite the history. Fong's announced their move to the former Peace Tree Brewing location earlier this month, and while most people are excited for the change, many wondered what would become of the 4th street restaurant. In a press release on Friday, Full Court Press announced they will open The Empire. Inspired by The Empire Tavern which opened in 1905 in the same location, the new restaurant will return the space to its original design. The Empire was discovered while replacing flooring when the original tile work was uncovered, revealing the name 'The Empire' embedded in the tile. This discovery helped steer Full Court Press to their newest restaurant idea. 'The hope is that The Empire can be remodeled and restored to what we think it looked like in 1905. The walls will be adorned in historical photos of downtown as well as photos and history related to the rich history of the Elliot Hotel,' read a part of the statement. Federal Courthouse soon to be up for auction The statement says The Empire will serve coffee, pastries, and select breakfast items in the morning. They will have a lunch menu consisting of comfort foods including hot beef sandwiches, calzones, meatloaf and more. They will also have heartier meals at night including prime rib and lasagna. 'The bar will be supplied with mostly traditional American beer brands as well as a few local craft beers. There will be a large selection of whiskies as well as a turn-of-the-century cocktail menu,' part of the statement reads. The release indicated The Empire will still be designed to serve downtown, but in a different way than its previous inhabitant. 'The new rendition of The Empire will be a space dedicated to the downtown residents and workers of the area through affordable comfort food and affordable drinks, the hope is that the residents of this area can call The Empire home and frequent it several times a week.' The release doesn't say when The Empire will be opening their doors. Copyright 2025 Nexstar Media, Inc. All rights reserved. Iowans battle icy roads as freezing rain covers metro
DES MOINES, Iowa — Freezing rain fell across Iowa Wednesday and caused drivers trouble on the roads. Jason Clerk, a construction worker driving down from Ogden, said the roads gave him trouble while towing a trailer. Iowa schools could start before Iowa State Fair has ended under new bill 'I came from up north by Ogden. We were up on a job site up there and pulling a truck and trailer was kind of sketchy up there. They were getting more of the snow than the rain, but once we got into town and switched trucks, it's just more wet now. But on the side roads, it's pretty slick.' Clerk said. Tony Dirksen, a Lyft Driver, said roads were worse on side streets that had not yet been treated with salt. 'Most of my pickups are on side streets. So, you know, you get, get a little bit slick down side streets, but regular streets are fine.' Dirksen said. Warm weather is expected tomorrow, which will bring relief to drivers braving icy roads. Iowa schools could start before Iowa State Fair has ended under new bill
DES MOINES, Iowa — A bill that would allow Iowa schools to start before the Iowa State Fair has ended was advanced through committee on Tuesday. The Iowa Senate Education Committee advanced SF 205, which allows both public and private schools in the state to start earlier. The bill states school calendars can begin as early as the second to last Monday of August and no later than the first Monday of December. That means there would be years where school starts before the Iowa State Fair has ended. In 2015 then Governor Terry Branstad signed a bill into law that prohibited schools from starting before the state fair had ended, no sooner than August 23. Fong's Pizza moving out of downtown Des Moines after 16 years Iowa State Education Association President Joshua Brown said the association is for the bill as it allows school districts to decide the best start date for them. 'As proponents of local control, the Iowa State Education Association believes Iowa school districts should have the flexibility to align with their local community's needs. Our local school districts can thoughtfully evaluate these factors and choose a start date that best supports their students' success and the community's overall needs,' Brown said. Multiple other school associations, as well as the Professional Educators of Iowa are for the bill. Adventureland, the Iowa Travel Industry Partners, and Okoboji Tourism are all against the bill, while the Iowa State Fair remains undecided. The bill was unanimously passed through the Education Committee. It's now eligible for debate on the Senate floor.
