‘Unfortunate reality': Local pantry runs out of food

PROVIDENCE, R.I. (WPRI) — A local food pantry is asking the community for help. Better Lives Rhode Island posted a picture of bare shelves on social media on Wednesday. 'We have the unfortunate reality today,' the nonprofit wrote in the post. 'Our Food Pantry at 12 Abbott Park Place, Providence is empty. We have no food to serve the people of Rhode Island.' According to the Rhode Island Food Bank's 2024 Hunger Status Report, two out of five households are food insecure, a higher rate than any time during the pandemic. The report cites increases in the costs of rent, transportation, child care and health care as factors in the rising levels of food insecurity. The downtown pantry says it served more than 30,000 individuals in 2024. 'Those individuals are still in need of our services,' the pantry explained. 'Harsh winter conditions have made access to food even harder for Rhode Islanders, and we need your help to restock.' Anyone who would like to help Better Lives can donate by clicking here. You can also donate non-perishable food items. The pantry is currently accepting the following items: Canned fruits and vegetables Canned meats (tuna, chicken, etc.) Canned soups Peanut butter and jelly Rice and beans Instant mashed potatoes Bottled water Milk powder or shelf-stable milk Bread and tortillas Instant coffee Shelf-stable juices Powdered beverages (lemonade, tea, etc.) Anyone who would like to host a food or donation drive can email PHudson@ You can find food pantries and meal sites in Rhode Island by clicking here.
