Ascension Parish to open Food Truck Court at courthouse

BATON ROUGE, La. (Louisiana First) — Ascension Parish officials are moving forward with plans to open a food truck court in front of the Ascension Parish Courthouse in Gonzales, aiming to provide convenient dining options for courthouse visitors, jurors and staff. Pamela Matassa, spokesperson for Ascension Parish Government, said the idea originated after courthouse users expressed interest in a café space. Matassa said when the administration took office in 2020, the new courthouse was nearly complete. After a year of operation, visitors approached them about adding a café for jury selection and trial days. 'Due to space limitations in the lobby, we explored alternative options—leading to the idea of an outdoor food truck court,' she said. The designated area will accommodate up to six food trucks at a time. The variety of cuisines will be determined during the vendor solicitation process, Matassa said. To support the new court, the parish is finalizing ordinances to establish licensing requirements, designate approved food truck operating areas, and regulate food truck courts. Additionally, all food truck operators will be required to meet health and safety regulations to ensure compliance. Matassa said public input will be welcomed once the court is operational. 'The public is always encouraged to provide feedback on any parish operation or facility,' she said. Brusly man accused of raping young family member for years arrested, police say

BATON ROUGE, La. (Louisiana First) — An 18-year-old man accused of raping an underage family member was arrested by the Brusly Police Department. Brody Michael Slayton was charged with one count of first-degree rape after police received a report from the victim and her family about 'multiple incidents of sexual abuse.' According to arrest documents, the victim told police the abuse began when she was under 10 years old. In a written statement, the victim said the abuse included non-consensual kissing, inappropriate touching, oral sex, and intercourse that happened during overnight stays or playing hide and seek. The victim's father told officials that his daughter told him that Slayton had been abusing her for years in January. During a forensic interview, the victim told investigators that she was afraid to disclose the abuse earlier because Slayton had allegedly threatened her multiple times. Arrest documents said the victim also told investigators that Slayton would hold her down and cover her mouth, telling her that he would kill her if she told anyone. Police said that the victim's statements in the interview were consistent with the initial statements she and her family provided, and a warrant was issued for his arrest.
