Drivers prepare: Major roadwork projects coming in 2025
HONOLULU (KHON2) — Oahu motorists, be prepared as major roadwork projects are already underway and others are set to begin in the coming months. Projects include a full closure of the H-1 Freeway at night and heavy traffic on Oahu's North Shore this summer. Currently, projects are underway on the H-1 near the stadium and airport viaduct, which leaves one lane open on weekends. Hawaii Department of Transportation Director Ed Sniffen said those projects will go through July and August of 2025. Elderly woman brutally murdered in Hilo Starting on April 1 crews will begin repaving battered Kamehameha Highway between Haleiwa and Waimea Bay with a single lane closure in either direction. Signs are posted warning drivers of lane closures between 8:30 p.m. and 4 a.m. on weekdays. However, the contractors will only be allowed to do night work for one month. 'From May through mid-December we have turtle nesting season and fledgling bird season that doesn't allow us to do night work anymore, so we're going to have to do day-time work,' Sniffen said. 'That being said in that area, day time work could be significantly impactful to traffic.'The two-lane highway can be extremely congested in summer. 'If it's too bad, we'll pull off and wait until bird and turtle seasons end and start with night work again but we're definitely going to give it a try,' Sniffen added. For now, the roughly six-mile repaving project is intended to be completed in December 2025. But Sniffen said if traffic is really bad, the repaving could be pushed back to December and go through May of next year when they are able to do night work. Additionally, more roadwork will be happening this summer and fall on the H-1 Freeway. Crews are currently working on adding a new lane from Ola Lane to the Kalihi interchange. A waterline placement will also soon happen under the freeway, including the widening the Gulick overpass. The Gulick overpass bridge will be completely closed and crews need to build a temporary pedestrian bridge so nearby residents can commute easily to and from school and work. FoodieCon to fill Blaisdell Exhibition Hall this weekend 'The next major portion is getting the waterline under the H-1, then getting a pedestrian overpass over the H-1 is going to be starting in about September, during that time there is going to be closures overnight to ensure we can minimize the impacts to everybody,' Sniffen said. The night time overpass work will require a full closure of the H-1 freeway at night. Sniffen said major projects for neighbor islands this year include bridge repairs on the Hamakua Coast of Hawaii island, the Lahaina bypass extension on south Honoapiilani Highway moving away from the ocean, and roundabouts and repaving work on Kauai. He encourages all residents to sign up for weekly lane closure announcements from the DOT website and to also download and follow any mobile traffic app which can show where roadwork is taking place. FoodieCon to fill Blaisdell Exhibition Hall this weekend
HONOLULU (KHON2) — This weekend, it's all about food. So if you're hungry, don't cook anything. Put the pots and pans away and come down to the Neal Blaisdell Exhibition Hall where there will be hundreds of vendors providing delicious dishes and products. Artist paints Hawaii's tallest mural in Halawa The 2025 FoodieCon and Spring Expo is taking place this weekend, with Jade Chun of Pacific Expos saying that their fourth installment of the expo will have affordable, delicious options and entertainment for patrons. 'This weekend, what is special about the FoodieCon is there are hot vendors who will be providing us a $7 menu so you have to check out all the vendors. They are going to have little placards on their tent that is going to have $7 menu along with their regular menus, so lots of food,' Chun said. 'We are probably going over, a little over 200 vendors. Lots going on aside from the $7 food plates. We got the labubu contest… People can do a labubu food inspired dish or art piece and they have a chance to win a labubu and toys from Toys & Things Hawaii. So, just not eating. Entertainment, eat more and shop.' But the expo is more than just a place to get a quick, yummy bite. It provides small businesses with a platform to grow and find more success in their ventures.'Just give them a little platform and we've seen a lot of success with businesses come out just from doing our little shows or gift shows outside and now they have restaurants or they have stores,' Chun said. 'You know, just giving them opportunity and opportunity for some side hustle but its just here in Hawaii, we just need a little bit more so we are happy to be a part of their journey and adventure with new businesses.' Dallas Carter, owner of Balsamic Hawaii, one of the 200 vendors that will be featured at this weekend's fabulous food feast, says that expos like this one aid his growth. 'People get to know who we are and hopefully they want to reorder the products. I have been doing this for 18 years now. We got a pretty good following with our balsamic and I also surround myself with a whole bunch of local products,' Carter said. 'Rubs and salts and really good honey, and we bring in truffle oil from England and we try to have a little niche that maybe not everybody has. You are not going to see everybody with balsamic but we have been doing this for quite a while.' Download the free KHON2 app for iOS or Android to stay informed on the latest news While Carter doesn't have a brick-and-mortar business, he typically sells out of Aloha Stadium's market, making big expos like FoodieCon an even bigger deal for small business owners. 'That enables small businesses to be kind of a travelling show and not be totally subjected to all the rents and electricity and all the common maintenance and all the stuffs in the store. Not only that but being there constantly, three days a week there and whatever shows, fairs, stuff like that which we can pick up,' Carter said. The 2025 FoodieCon and Spring Expo here at the Neal Blaisdell Exhibition Hall this weekend from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. on Saturday and 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Sunday. Over 200 different vendors with over half of that being food, so come hungry. For more information, click here. Copyright 2025 Nexstar Media, Inc. All rights reserved.
