ESPN predicts the Chiefs returning to the Super Bowl in a rematch vs. the Eagles

ESPN predicts the Chiefs returning to the Super Bowl in a rematch vs. the Eagles ESPN's Seth Walder recently revealed the latest 'Football Power Index' rankings. He lists the Kansas City Chiefs second, behind the defending Super Bowl champion Philadelphia Eagles. 'Two of the past three Super Bowls have been between Kansas City and Philadelphia,' wrote Walder. 'Will it be three of four? The 4.2% chance of a Super Bowl LIX repeat is the greatest of any combination of teams in our Super Bowl matchup projections, slightly besting the 3.6% chances of Ravens- Eagles and Bills- Eagles matchups. Top combinations are listed below and rounded to the nearest whole number.' ESPN's 'Football Power Index' is an early rating and projection model for the upcoming season, with all indications suggesting that last year's Super Bowl will be repeated in 2025. Last season, the Chiefs became the first team in NFL history to reach five Super Bowls in a six-season span. Both teams made significant roster changes during the offseason, so the early prediction will likely change by midseason.

ESPN's Football Power Index has the New Orleans Saints ranked dead last

ESPN's Football Power Index has the New Orleans Saints ranked dead last Hey, there's nowhere to go but up. ESPN's Seth Walder shared a look at the first NFL Football Power Index (FPI) rankings ahead of the 2025 preseason, which has the New Orleans Saints at the very bottom -- ranking at No. 32 among the league's 32 teams. FPI, which is updated regularly in the offseason and daily during the regular season, is defined as "a measure of team strength that is meant to be the best predictor of a team's performance going forward for the rest of the season. FPI represents how many points above or below average a team is. Projected results are based on 10,000 simulations of the rest of the season using FPI, results to date, and the remaining schedule." It's just the latest sign that the Saints have a lot of work to do in cleaning up their image. They need to prove their doubters (of which there are many) wrong and win a lot of games this year. But that's easier said than done, especially with a new head coach and no sure thing at quarterback. If you're curious about the rest of the NFC South, the Saints were joined in the bottom tier by the Atlanta Falcons (at No. 26) and Carolina Panthers (No. 28), but the Tampa Bay Buccaneers (No. 14) are expected to hold onto the division title. But did the FPI rankings get it right last year? They were too bullish on a San Francisco 49ers team that ranked first but suffered too many injuries and only won six games. Like everyone else, they ruled out the Washington Commanders (at No. 28) who stunned the football world by reaching the NFC Championship Game. And in the NFC South specifically, they called down years for the Saints (No. 26) and Carolina Panthers (No. 32) while overrating the Atlanta Falcons (No. 15), who went into the year with a comfortable lead over the Tampa Bay Buccaneers (No. 22). Maybe this year's story plays out differently.

Where are Jacksonville Jaguars ranked in ESPN's Football Power Index?

Where did the Jacksonville Jaguars land in ESPN's preseason Football Power Index (FPI) rankings? But first, what is FPI? Using analytics, FPI "is a measure of team strength that is meant to be the best predictor of a team's performance going forward for the rest of the season," and results are based on "10,000 simulations." Advertisement For the Jaguars, they come in at No. 22 in these FPI rankings at minus-1.9 points, meaning that against an average NFL team, the Jaguars would lose by 1.9 points based on the thousands of simulations. As we've discussed before, it feels like this Jaguars team is on the right path following the organizational reshaping that took place this offseason. Tony Boselli, James Gladstone, and Liam Coen have established a clear vision for where they want this team to go. The obvious emphasis this offseason has been on ensuring that Trevor Lawrence has the help he needs around him so that he doesn't have to be Superman on every play. This started with the hiring of Coen, who brings a Sean McVay-like offensive scheme to Jacksonville, and one that has helped produce a number of productive quarterbacks around the NFL. Advertisement Gladstone would also make six additions to an offensive line unit where improved play is needed, and he also added a lot of speed to the offense by bringing in Bhayshul Tuten, Dyami Brown, and Travis Hunter. On defense, Anthony Campanile brings a flexible defensive scheme that will be quick to adjust based on what the opponent is doing and mold the system to the skill sets he has to work with on the roster. While all of that may be true, we still haven't seen this team on the football field yet. So, although the Jaguars very much look like a team ready to make some strides, how big those strides are or how quickly they happen still remains to be seen. Where are Indianapolis Colts ranked in ESPN's Football Power Index?

Where are Indianapolis Colts ranked in ESPN's Football Power Index? Where did the Indianapolis Colts land in ESPN's preseason Football Power Index rankings? Where did the Indianapolis Colts land in ESPN's preseason Football Power Index (FPI) rankings? But first, what is FPI? Using analytics, FPI "is a measure of team strength that is meant to be the best predictor of a team's performance going forward for the rest of the season," and results are based on "10,000 simulations." For the Colts, they come in at No. 23 in these FPI rankings at minus-1.9 points, meaning that against an average NFL team, the Colts would lose by 1.9 points based on the thousands of simulations. As we've discussed before, there is a lot to like about this Colts roster. The secondary has been reshaped with the additions of Cam Bynum and Charvarius Ward, not to mention that the addition of Lou Anarumo as defensive coordinator should provide the unit with a boost, and the defensive line has been heavily invested in over the years. On offense, the Colts have a number of playmaking options, including at the tight end position now with Tyler Warren. However, the biggest unknown for this Colts team lies at the game's most important position--quarterback. Ultimately, how good the Colts are will be determined by the play of whoever ends up under center. Throughout offseason programs and into training camp, Anthony Richardson and Daniel Jones will be splitting the starting reps, and as Shane Steichen has said earlier this offseason, consistency will determine who wins that job. "It is an open competition," Steichen said after Wednesday's practice. "Those guys are competing. We're breaking down the reps; they're both getting one reps, they're both getting two reps. I think through OTAs, we got nine good practices, they'll both get about 170 reps a piece with those guys, with the ones and twos. We'll flip-flop them." On paper, the Colts have the 12th-easiest strength of schedule heading into the 2025 season.
