France together with India in fight against terror: Ravi Shankar Prasad-led team concludes Paris visit

'All the colleagues in the Senate in this majestic building have only one word to say: we are together with India in the fight against terrorism,' Prasad told reporters. The nine-member delegation was joined by representatives of the India-France Friendship Group in the French Senate led by its Vice-President, Jacqueline Eustache-Brinio, as well as members of the Foreign Affairs and Defence Committee at the grand Luxembourg Palace for their final engagement in the French capital before departing for Rome, Italy. Paris, May 27 (PTI) France on Tuesday reiterated its solidarity with India in the fight against terrorism emanating from Pakistan and agreed that the democratic world needs to speak in one voice on this issue, BJP leader Ravi Shankar Prasad said at the conclusion of the Paris leg of his all-party delegation's visit to European capitals. 'They totally agreed that France and India, indeed the whole democratic world, need to speak in one voice in the fight against terrorism emanating from Pakistan and supported by the Pakistani state,' he said, adding that the delegation was 'really touched' by this support and expressed gratitude to the French Senators. 'We saw it all here: energy, compassion, love for France and India and the people, that is the takeaway (of the visit),' he added. The dialogue with the Senators followed a meeting with members of the India-France Friendship Group in the Assemblee Nationale (National Assembly) earlier on Tuesday. 'This meeting was very interesting for us to note how India sees France. We have a partnership that is very strong, very old and very good for both nations. It's promising for the future,' said Thierry Tesson, President of the group which is planning a visit to India soon. 'We are fighting against terrorism in France also. Like the president of the delegation (Prasad), I agree it (terrorism) is like a cancer that has to be fought against. We are stronger when we are together against this cancer,' he said. Earlier, the multi-party delegation including MPs Daggubati Purandeswari, Priyanka Chaturvedi, Ghulam Ali Khatana, Dr Amar Singh, Samik Bhattacharya and M Thambidurai, and former Union minister MJ Akbar and former Deputy National Security Advisor Ambassador Pankaj Saran addressed the local French media to highlight the global aspect of terrorism rooted in Pakistan. 'The distinction between the state of Pakistan and terrorism has now withered away. Terrorism as an instrument of state policy is a part of the military state of Pakistan,' Prasad told reporters. The European delegation, one of 33 similar all-party teams travelling across the globe to express India's zero-tolerance stance against terror, is now scheduled for dialogues and meetings in Italy. This will be followed by visits to Denmark, the UK, Belgium and Germany. As part of India's diplomatic outreach, all-party delegations are travelling to global capitals to reach out to the international community on Pakistan's designs and India's response to terror, especially in view of the April 22 Pahalgam terror attack that killed 26 people. Who was Mohammed Sinwar? Hamas leader Netanyahu claims Israel has killed

Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu on Wednesday said that Israel has probably killed Hamas leader Mohammed Sinwar. Earlier the Defence Minister Israel Katz had told the Knesset's Foreign Affairs and Defence Committee that Mohammed Sinwar, was likely killed in an Israeli airstrike in Khan Yunis. Although the Defence Forces could not confirm the death Katz said that all indications point to that way. Although the Israel Defence Forces has not confirmed Sinwar's death, "all indications" point that way, Katz told the committee. After the death of his brother and Hamas's late leader, Yahya Sinwar, Muhammad took over the military wing and the political command in Gaza. After his brother he was considered the most influential in the organisation. Born, Mohammad Ibrahim Hassan Sinwar, in the Khan Yunis refugee camp in Gaza, he worked his way up to the ranks of Hamas over several decades. Nicknamed as 'the shadow' by Israeli officials due to his secretive activities, Sinwar was a key figure within the group. In 2006 he was involved with the abduction of the Israeli soldier Gilad Shalit, an operation that later led to a prison exchange deal in 2011. While spending years in Israeli and Palestine prisons he developed close ties with other Hamas leadership and joined the military movement of Hamas in was regarded as the mastermind behind the deadly Hamas attacks on Israel in October 2023. Netanyahu signals Israel's readiness for Gaza ceasefire

Israel opened the door to both a short-term ceasefire proposal and even a broader agreement to end the Gaza conflict entirely, Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's office said on Sunday. Israeli negotiators in Qatar are actively exploring multiple diplomatic tracks, including a short-term truce and a long-term settlement. "Under the prime minister's direction, even at this hour, the negotiating team in Doha is working to exhaust every possibility for a deal -- whether according to the Witkoff outline or within the framework of ending the war, which would include the release of all hostages, the exile of Hamas terrorists, and the disarmament of the Gaza Strip," Netanyahu's office said. In return, Israel would consider the release of Palestinian security prisoners, with the longer-term aim of achieving a comprehensive and permanent ceasefire through continued diplomacy. Until now, Netanyahu has rejected any permanent ceasefire that does not dismantle Hamas's military and governing capabilities. His previous stance only allowed for a limited pause of about 45 days, contingent on the release of around 10 hostages. Netanyahu's office reaffirmed that any final agreement must meet Israel's long-standing war aims: "The release of all hostages, the exile of Hamas terrorists, and the disarmament of the Gaza Strip." "The government is doing everything possible to return the 58 remaining captives," it added. However, agreement within the governing coalition was not unanimous. National Security Minister Itamar Ben-Gvir rejected the notion of a framework for ending the war that does not result in Hamas's defeat. "A framework to end the war without defeating Hamas - will not arise and will not happen," he wrote on the social media platform X. Meanwhile, Defence Minister Israel Katz told the Knesset's Foreign Affairs and Defence Committee on Sunday that Mohammed Sinwar, Hamas's highest commander and brother of the terror group's late leader, Yahya Sinwar, was likely killed in an Israeli airstrike in Khan Yunis on Wednesday. Although the Israel Defence Forces has not confirmed Sinwar's death, "all indications" point that way, Katz told the committee. According to an unconfirmed report in Saudi Arabia's Al-Arabiya paper, the bodies of Sinwar and 10 of his aides have been found in a tunnel in Khan Yunis in southern Gaza. Sinwar is believed to have been killed in an Israeli airstrike on a Hamas command centre under the European Hospital.
