Hubballi: Hubballi will soon get its third tree park under the forest department's Tree Park Yojana.
Spread across 33 acres in Gokul Forest, the park is being developed at a cost of Rs 3 crore.
Work already began, with Karnataka Rural Infrastructure Development Limited (KRIDL) constructing the entrance arch. The park will feature green spaces and attractions for visitors. Soon, forest minister Eshwar Khandre will lay the foundation stone.
The forest department has six parks across the district as of now. Dharwad city has Sanjivini Tree Park in Rayapur and Salumarada Thimmakka Park in Navalur.
Alnavar and Kalghatagi each have one Salumarada Thimmakka Park. Hubballi has Nrupatunga Betta and Salumarada Thimmakka Park at Budnal. Another park will come up in the Gokul forest area. Footfall at almost all parks is increasing, especially at Nrupatunga Betta and Sanjivini Park.
A tree park is an area with predominant tree growth, both natural and planted, along with herbs, shrubs, climbers, etc. It aims to provide a natural environment to urban dwellers at an accessible distance to enhance appreciation of nature among them.

Tree parks have been established near cities so that urban dwellers can experience nature and engage in activities such as walking, jogging, cycling, yoga, meditation, etc.
Residents of Gokul, Morarjinagar, RM Lohiya Nagar, Shakti Nagar, Venkatesh Nagar, and surrounding areas, including Dharwad, can visit the park regularly for enjoyment.
Vivek Kawari, deputy conservator of forest, Dharwad, told TOI that as of now, Rs 3 crore had been sanctioned for the development of the park.
"A proposal for more funds, around Rs 6.5 crore, was sent to the govt. The work started and will be completed in 2 years," he said.
RS Uppar, range forest officer, Hubballi division, said that the facility will feature pergolas, children's play equipment, senior citizens' exercise stations, walking trails, a cafeteria, and an amphitheatre. The tree park will have basic amenities like toilets, drinking water facilities, rest areas, solar-powered lighting, and pathways for visitors.
Nagaraj Nadakarni, president of Morarjinagar Second Stage Welfare Development Association, said that the tree park will help senior citizens, locals, and children enjoy a green environment. The tree park should be developed in the Salumarada Thimmakka Park model built across the state, he said.
