(Shawn Thew/Pool Photo via AP) LONDON (AP) — Formula 1 team Alpine has changed its driver lineup to promote Franco Colapinto for at least the next five Grand Prix races at the expense of Jack Doohan. Alpine confirmed the change Wednesday, a day after Oliver Oakes quit as team principal. The team said Flavio Briatore will continue as executive advisor and will cover Oakes' duties. Advertisement 'Colapinto will be paired with Pierre Gasly from the Emilia-Romagna Grand Prix, ahead of a new evaluation before the British Grand Prix in July," Alpine said in a statement. Alpine is ninth in the F1 constructors' standings. At Sunday's Miami Grand Prix, Doohan ran into another car on the opening lap and then crashed on the second lap. Media reports of a driver change were dismissed ahead of the Miami GP weekend by Oakes, who had indicated that the rookie Australian driver would still be in the seat at Imola. Doohan, who didn't score a point in his five races, will remain with the team as a reserve driver. ___ AP auto racing:

(AP Photo/Darko Bandic) PARIS (AP) — Formula 1's governing body says it has approved General Motors' plans to supply engines for the new Cadillac team from 2029. The FIA's approval on Wednesday comes after GM's Cadillac brand got the final signoff to join the F1 grid next year as the 11th team. Advertisement The team plans to use Ferrari engines until GM Performance Power Units, formed by GM and its co-owner of the team, TWG Motorsports, is ready to supply engines in 2029. 'Development and testing of the team's Formula 1 prototype engine technology is ongoing,' the FIA said in a statement on social media, and plans are in place for a factory in North Carolina. The entry date of 2029 comes amid discussions in F1 over whether to change course on the sport's commitment to the current turbocharged hybrid power units ahead of regulation changes coming for 2026 which further emphasize the electric power component of the units. FIA President Mohammed Ben Sulayem has suggested a return to V10 engines, last widely used in F1 in 2005. FIA talks with engine suppliers and some teams at the Bahrain Grand Prix this month ended with a commitment to the 2026 regulations but also plans for further talks on 'the future technical direction of the sport.' ___ AP auto racing:

Martin Brundle reveals George Russell concern amid Max Verstappen speculation
George Russell's Mercedes future has left Martin Brundle 'quite worried' after speculation over Max Verstappen's future. The Formula 1 world champion's recent struggles with Red Bull have sparked talk of a move away, with Mercedes linked due to Toto Wolff's history with the Dutch driver. Advertisement Red Bull struggled at the Bahrain International Circuit with a brake issue, which resulted in a sixth-place finish and the 27-year-old declared 'nothing went well'. Helmut Marko failed to dampen speculation when admitting there is 'concern is great' about his future amid talk of an escape clause in his contract. Wolff spurned a chance to sign the four-time champion back in 2014 before his move to Red Bull and Brundle is adamant the Mercedes chief would not fail a second time should he become available, which could leave Russell's future in doubt due to Kimi Antonelli's potential. 'I think if Max Verstappen sprung into the marketplace, I would be quite worried for George, actually, because Kimi is obviously their man for the future,' Brundle said on Sky Sports. Advertisement 'So there's a lot of ifs in there. George is doing a great job for him as team leader, but Toto missed Max once, I don't think that he'll miss him a second time should he get the opportunity.' Mercedes driver George Russell of Britain celebrates second place at the the Formula One Bahrain Grand Prix (Copyright 2025 The Associated Press. All rights reserved.) While Marko underlined the need to provide Verstappen with a competitive car to challenge Lando Norris and Oscar Piastri in the McLaren. 'The concern is great,' he said. 'As I said, improvements have to come in the near future so that he has a car with which he can win again. We have to create a basis with a car so that he can fight for the World Championship. 'It's clear. We must make progress that is not expressed in points, but on the stopwatch. With such a performance, it won't be anything to do with the World Championship.'

(AP Photo/Altaf Qadri) SAKHIR, Bahrain (AP) — Roaring engines again filled the air for the recent Bahrain Grand Prix, the first F1 race of the season in the Middle East. The race, now in its 21st year, made history as the first Formula One race in the Middle East in 2004. Today, it marks the first of the season in the Mideast, which this year will also see races in Saudi Arabia, Qatar and the season-ending Abu Dhabi Grand Prix. Advertisement Locals, foreign workers and international visitors flocked to the race, in Sakhir outside of Bahrain's capital, Manama, as the first signs of the region's intense summer heat was felt. Some tried their luck in racing simulators, while henna artists offered their temporary tattooing to those unfamiliar with the Mideast tradition. The rulers of Bahrain, a small island kingdom in the Persian Gulf just off the coast of Saudi Arabia, have long taken an interest in racing — particularly Bahrain's Crown Prince Crown Prince Salman bin Hamad, who encouraged the kingdom's investments in McLaren through its Mumtalakat Holding Co. sovereign wealth fund. However, the race has drawn scrutiny to Bahrain in the past, particularly after the kingdom crushed its 2011 Arab Spring protests with the help of Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates. The past weekend's race and the preparations around it saw no major disruptions, though police temporarily detained one activist in the lead up over his posts on social media. As a photographer now based in Dubai after years in India, it can be difficult to shoot candid photos in the region given security concerns and other restrictions journalists face in the Middle East. But at the race, people were more open to my camera — even excited to be photographed. That made the experience not only refreshing, but deeply human.

Concerns mount at Red Bull after Verstappen's 'catastrophe' as F1 heads to Saudi Arabia

(AP Photo/Darko Bandic) Red Bull driver Max Verstappen of the Netherlands in action during the the Formula One Bahrain Grand Prix, in Sakhir, Sunday, April 13, 2025. (AP Photo/Darko Bandic) Max Verstappen and Red Bull are one of Formula 1's all-time most successful partnerships. But a disastrous race has raised concerns Verstappen could consider a move elsewhere. Following the Bahrain Grand Prix, Verstappen talked of a 'catastrophe' as he listed the problems. The defending world champion had to cope with tires overheating, brake problems and two different pit stop delays. At one stage, he was briefly last before finishing sixth. Advertisement Why might Verstappen's future be in question? Red Bull's influential motorsport adviser Helmut Marko has previously indicated there's a performance-related clause in Verstappen's contract, which is officially dated to 2028. The specifics aren't public but Marko indicated to the BBC last month a clause could come into play 'if we don't deliver for Max.' Red Bull seemed to have the fourth-fastest car in Bahrain, behind McLaren, Ferrari and Mercedes. Asked by Sky Sport Germany after the Bahrain race Sunday if he had concerns that Verstappen might consider his future, Marko said: 'The (concern) is great ... improvements need to come in the near future so that he once again has a car that he can win with.' Advertisement Verstappen signaled his unhappiness with a key team decision last month. He 'liked' an Instagram post by ex-F1 driver Giedo van der Garde which suggested it was a 'panic move' to replace Liam Lawson as his teammate after two races of the season. Where could Verstappen go? Mercedes team principal Toto Wolff expressed interest in a potential move last year. Both of his drivers are only confirmed to be under contract for this year. Verstappen has hinted at leaving F1 someday, saying last year he'd 'passed halfway for sure' in his career and dislikes the busy schedule. Marko suggested Sunday that Verstappen's most recent wins in the rain in Brazil and after a stunning qualifying lap in Japan had come despite the car, not because of it. He added that Red Bull needed to create 'a base level' of performance 'so that he can fight for the world championship.' Advertisement What's gone wrong at Red Bull? After two record-breaking years of dominance for Verstappen and Red Bull in 2022 and 2023, Red Bull fell behind McLaren on pace partway through the season in 2024. Verstappen won only two of the last 14 races but still retained the title. McLaren won the constructors' championship. The regulations are largely unchanged since 2022 and there are competing theories for Red Bull's decline. Verstappen said last year that Red Bull had turned a winning car 'into a monster' in its attempts to squeeze more pace out of the design. His then-teammate Sergio Perez made similar claims when his results fell off dramatically. Advertisement There are also questions over the effect of car design guru Adrian Newey leaving or whether Red Bull has simply reached the limits of the car's basic concept. Marko said the team mismanaged Friday practice sessions, meaning unpleasant surprises like Verstappen lacking grip on hard tires in Bahrain. Those 'Black Fridays' need to end, Marko said. How soon could Red Bull turn it round? Probably not this week. The Saudi Arabian GP in Jeddah on Sunday could bring more issues with heat, though Verstappen expects less tire wear than in Bahrain. Upgrades are expected for the Emilia-Romagna Grand Prix at the Imola circuit in Italy on May 18. Advertisement 'We had some issues that set us back," Verstappen said in a team statement Tuesday, "and we still have a lot of work to do on the car to get us where we need to be." ___ AP auto racing:
