Report: Aces players receive another $100K with investigation in limbo

Every player on the roster of the Las Vegas Aces will receive a $100,000 sponsorship fee, courtesy of the Las Vegas Convention and Visitors Authority. That's according to the Las Vegas Review-Journal, which reported that all 13 players have signed an agreement for the 2025 season. It's the second consecutive season the tourism group and the Aces are partnering. After the first deal was announced last May, the WNBA announced it was launching an investigation. Steve Hill, the president of the LVCVA, told the Review-Journal on Monday that his group has not been informed of the status of the investigation. "I don't know the inner workings of the league," Hill said. "I'm not looking to cause more of an issue, and it doesn't seem like there's an issue there. So we're just moving forward." Please also have benefited from perks such as concert tickets as part of the sponsorship agreement. As for the benefits for the organization, the report said social media views of the players' interactions with its membership at the time of the 2024 deal announcement received at least 2.2 million views on the X platform alone. "The announcement itself made it a success, just all by itself," he said. "There was an awful lot of attention and eyeballs on Las Vegas." The players' commitment is to represent Las Vegas at various events, including at the Formula One Las Vegas Grand Prix, and the deal was agreed to directly with the players and didn't have team input. Hill said the LVCVA's sponsorship agreement was never intended to help the Aces skirt the league's salary cap. Pay in the league in 2024 ranged from the mid-$60,000s to a $242,000 supermax deal. "This was not in coordination with the team, and there was not an attempt to support the salary cap," Hill said, per the report. "It's just a sponsorship that helps draw attention to the pay levels of players. So getting those ambassadors out there and making them a part of our marketing effort has been great." Formula One's Las Vegas Grand Prix race will start earlier in 2025. Here's why. Show Caption Hide Caption Shaquille O'Neal Says Social Media Would Have Taken His NBA Fame to Trillionaire Status Shaq reflects on how the power of social media could have transformed his earning potential during his time in the NBA. MIAMI GARDENS, Fla. — The Formula One Las Vegas Grand Prix – one of three annual F1 races in the United States – has received plenty of feedback from locals, the F1 community, ticket holders, and East Coast fans who aren't able to stay awake for the whole nighttime race in November. So, the Las Vegas GP is moving up its start time two hours earlier – from 10 p.m. PT to 8 p.m. PT – for its third edition Nov. 22-24, 2025. Ideally, the race will end around its original start time – allowing F1 drivers, teams and fans to experience more of the city after racing on the Las Vegas Strip. East Coast fans won't have to stay awake past 1 a.m. ET to tune in, while the time change still appeals to the overseas F1 markets in Europe, the Middle East and Asia. 'I think, as we've just learned, it's just slightly too late. So, we took on the feedback on what everybody was asking for, and for us to be stubborn about it isn't the right decision,' Las Vegas GP president and CEO Emly Prazer told USA TODAY Sports ahead of the 2025 Miami Grand Prix. 'Vegas has so much going for it that there's just so much to do. It just made a lot more sense to shift it up, and program it slightly differently. But ultimately, you're still going to have the night race experience – it's still going to be incredibly full on.' The Las Vegas GP is still establishing itself on the F1 calendar after its first two editions, when Red Bull's Max Verstappen won in 2023 and Mercedes' George Russell won 2024. The Vegas race will offer its cheapest tickets in its third year, hoping fans will buy earlier to avoid rising prices before the race. It's a different approach after Las Vegas needed to lower ticket prices in the leadup to their first two races. 'We're quite open about the fact that we had a very short window to make the first race happen, trying really hard to understand what all of that meant. We didn't have much insight into operating expenses, so there was a little bit of a challenge. We're now super confident that we know how to put this race on cost effectively, and so we wanted to pass through that benefit to the fan,' Prazer said of the lower ticket prices. Las Vegas officials also announced May 2 the opening of Grand Prix Plaza – touted as North America's largest F1 attraction with more than 100,000 square feet of activities. The venue features cars and artifacts from F1's 75-year history, while offering a go-karting experience on a track, F1 simulations, shopping and restaurants. The year-round venue uses the Paddock Club area utilized by the Vegas Grand Prix race. 'The one thing that we're super proud of is that the race is actually phenomenal, it's a super-fast track, and everybody loves the racing. We're making it the ultimate F1 experience,' Prazer said.

Las Vegas Sphere gives its cheeky emoji mascot a name, unveils merchandise store

Las Vegas Sphere gives its cheeky emoji mascot a name, unveils merchandise store Show Caption Hide Caption The Las Vegas Sphere is still turning heads with eye-catching visuals The MSG Sphere in Las Vegas has already secured its place as of the best displays off the Strip with its eye-catching visuals. It's round, cheeky and usually adorable – at least when it's not giving you the eye. That would be Orbi, the newly named emoji that takes over the exosphere – the world's largest LED screen – of the Sphere on a daily basis. During its 17-month existence, the graphic-with-personality on the outside of Las Vegas' revolutionary venue has taunted golfers at nearby resorts, sweated during the 100-degrees-plus summer weather, loomed over the Formula One Las Vegas Grand Prix as cars zipped around the Strip and boasted its patriotism with an 'I Voted' sticker in November. The moniker bestowed upon Orbi is in conjunction with the Sphere unveiling an e-commerce website featuring merchandise related to Orbi as well as the rotund building that has boasted concert residencies from U2, Phish, Dead & Company, the Eagles and Anyma since opening in September 2023. This year, concert programming ventures into country (Kenny Chesney, 15 shows starting May 22) and pop (Backstreet Boys, 18 shows starting July 11). More: The Sphere in Las Vegas really is a 'quantum leap' for live music: Inside the first shows 'Orbi has become a global phenomenon and cultural touchstone,' said Chandra Allison, executive vice president sales and service at the Sphere, noting how the emoji has 'captivated audiences' locally and on social media with its charismatic expressions. The Sphere, which neighbors the Venetian and Wynn resorts just off the Strip, has also become a magnet for visitors who want to gape at the visually arresting exosphere, which, as of July also includes a musical backdrop within the footprint of the venue. More: Heatwave to election: See some of the best Las Vegas Sphere visuals in 2024 The 'Orbi Collection' and related Sphere products such as T-shirts, hoodies, baby wear, tote bags, trucker hats, magnets and keychains, are available at Some Sphere-branded products will also be available for purchase at the venue. To celebrate the launch of the online store, Orbi will commandeer the Sphere's Instagram on Thursday (@SphereVegas) and will answer fan questions starting at 3 p.m. ET.
