Lamar CISD instructor shot, killed in 'incident involving her husband,' officials say
The Brief A Lamar CISD instructional coach was reportedly shot and killed on Sunday at a home in Rosenberg. When asked about the incident, the Fort Bend County Sheriff's Office sent FOX 26 a letter from the Lamar CISD superintendent. The letter says Iona Pollard was "tragically killed in an incident involving her husband," who also works with the district. An instructional coach with Lamar CISD has died after a shooting inside a Rosenberg home, according to officials. What they're saying The shooting was reported at a home at the intersection of Fort Hill Lane and Rocky Knoll Lane. Neighbors at the scene tell FOX 26 that they heard gunshots from the home at about 12:30 p.m. What we know When asked about the shooting, the Fort Bend County Sheriff's Office sent FOX 26 a letter from the Lamar CISD superintendent. According to the letter, Iona Pollard, an instructional at George Junior High School, was killed in "an incident involving her husband, David." According to the district's website, David Pollard is a School Safety Coordinator with Lamar CISD. The district says Iona leaves behind two children, who are also a part of the district. "The loss of their mother and the circumstances of this tragedy are incredibly heartbreaking. We extend our deepest condolences to the Pollard children, their families, friends, and all who knew Iona, particularly her colleagues and students at George Junior High," wrote Superintendent Dr. Roosevelt Nivens. What they're saying Alex Preister says he was shocked to see what was happening outside his front door Sunday afternoon. "So around 12:30, I was taking my daughter to burn some energy off, you know, getting ready for the Super Bowl and then police crews were barring down the street, and they went to my neighbor's house, and they approached the house and I saw them apprehend him, and he went peacefully into the vehicle," Preister said. Priester says this tragedy will rattle this tight-knit Rosenberg neighborhood. "They connected with us and the husband, the father we usually talk share stories about work, about life, about our kids, raising families, we often share food like barbecue, you know, just sharing our love for each other," he said. FORT BEND COUNTY, Texas - A Fort Bend County Sheriff's Office investigation is underway after deputies wrongfully detained a 17-year-old boy, an incident captured on video that has left the teen's family outraged. What we know The incident occurred when deputies responded to an active burglary call with limited information, identifying the suspects only as two Black males. The two teenagers, who live in the area, were meeting up when the encounter with law enforcement took place. "No, I just froze," she said. "I got here and there were four cop cars, four guys, and a female." Marie Hanks, the boy's aunt, expressed concern over the impact on the teenagers. "Making the boys feel threatened in their own community and neighborhood is alarming," she said. "Especially in this area that is so culturally diverse." A week after the incident, the family says the boys remain traumatized. "He's numb," Shawnie P. said of her son. "It's a different type of love when we see eye to eye, and he just hugs me." The other side The Fort Bend County Sheriff's Office acknowledged the situation, stating, "The Fort Bend County Sheriff's Office expects professional demeanor from its employees. This incident will be investigated to determine the basis for taking the person into custody and any subsequent action. As soon as any determination is made, notice will be provided." Dig deeper Marie Hanks criticized the deputies' actions, saying, "For the deputies not to take them into consideration and to treat those boys as criminals, only to apologize an hour later, it's not acceptable." The family is calling for the deputies involved to be discharged and for changes within the department. "They speak a lot about sensitivity training and learning how to work with the public, but that's not enough," Hanks said. "Something definitely needs to be done internally."
