Holmes Rolston III, Pioneer of Environmental Ethics, Dies at 92
A life-defining moment for the environmental philosopher Holmes Rolston III came when he was forced out as pastor of the Presbyterian church in rural Rockbridge Baths, Va., in 1965. It was a painful setback, prompted by his passion for science and the time off he took for hiking jaunts in the Shenandoah hills — pursuits that did not square with his conservative congregation's view of a minister's role. But the dismissal propelled him on to a restless intellectual and spiritual journey, with stops as a trained theologian and a natural historian, until, as a newly minted philosophy professor, he posed a question that had been unasked or routinely dismissed since before Plato: Does nature have value? His answer — that nature has intrinsic value apart from that derived from human perspectives — appeared in a groundbreaking essay in 1975 that launched his career as the globally recognized 'father' of environmental ethics and, in tune with rising public concern about land, air, water and wildlife, heralded what the philosopher Allen Carlson called the 'environmental turn' in philosophy after millenniums of neglect. Professor Rolston died on Feb. 12 at his home in Fort Collins, Colo. He was 92. His death, which was not widely reported at the time, was confirmed by his daughter and only immediate survivor, Shonny Vander Vliet. Professor Rolston's essay 'Is There an Ecological Ethic?' was published in the prestigious journal Ethics. It was the first major article in a philosophical journal to accord value to nature. Fort Collins native plays key role for record-setting 59-0 college baseball champions
Former Fort Collins baseball player Diego Aragon poses with the NAIA national championship trophy with father Kieth on May 30, 2025 after helping LSU Shreveport finish 59-0 in a record-setting season. Perfection on the diamond includes a familiar name in Fort Collins and Northern Colorado baseball. The LSU Shreveport baseball team finished off a perfect 59-0 season and national championship May 30 with a 13-7 win over Southeastern University in the NAIA World Series championship game in Lewiston, Idaho. Advertisement It's believed to be the first perfect season and longest winning streak at any level of collegiate baseball. And former Fort Collins High School player Diego Aragon was right in the center of the dogpile. The fifth-year senior was an everyday player for the Pilots, hitting .346 with a .476 on-base percentage in 54 games. Even better? Aragon was named to the All-Tournament team at catcher after going 4-for-11 with seven RBIs, four walks plus a double and a triple in the Pilots' four World Series games. He was a key part of an absolutely dominant season rarely seen at any level of baseball. LSU Shreveport outscored World Series opponents 49-17, won 27 total games by double digits and eight more by at least 15 runs. It was also the school's first national championship in any sport. Advertisement Aragon was the Pilots' primary catcher, committing just two errors all season for a .995 fielding percentage. The super senior got his start in Fort Collins, playing for the Lambkins from 2017-19 before the COVID-19 pandemic cancelled his senior season. Aragon began his college career at Indian Hills Community College before transferring to LSU Shreveport before the 2023 season. He gradually earned a bigger role the last two seasons before a sensational senior campaign, when he hit 7 homers with 14 doubles and 46 RBIs. Aragon is the son of Keith, a former Colorado State player and longtime softball head coach and baseball assistant at Fort Collins High School. Younger sisters Tyla and Tatum have been softball standouts for the Lambkins, while younger brother Niko is a rising baseball junior at FCHS. Advertisement Diego celebrated on the field with Keith after the game, posing together for a photo with the championship trophy. The Pilots broke the NAIA-record winning percentage of .935, set when Mount Vernon Nazarene (Ohio) went 43-3 in 1996. The NCAA Division I record is the .914 mark compiled by Arizona State (64-6) in 1972. Chris Abshire covers high school and community sports for the Coloradoan. Colorado man arrested, accused of kidnapping, sexual assault, more after nearly 30-mile chase
A Fort Collins man was arrested after allegedly leading deputies on a chase that spanned several Colorado communities. The chase stemmed from an alleged carjacking, kidnapping, and sexual assault of a woman. Shane McSwane, 28, of Fort Collins, is accused of carjacking a woman in Aurora late Sunday night and taking that car 140 miles south to Colorado City to rob a Circle K. The woman's mother called the Pueblo County Sheriff's Office and told dispatchers her daughter was kidnapped and that her cell phone's location could be tracked. A deputy on Interstate 25 saw the vehicle going northbound near Pueblo Boulevard and tried to stop McSwane, who turned around and fled southbound in a "dangerous high-speed pursuit" on I-25, according to the Pueblo County Sheriff's Office, before entering Huerfano County, allegedly crossing the highway median several times. Huerfano County deputies deployed spike strips onto the highway, which popped the tires, but McSwane continued for a few more miles, according to the Pueblo County Sheriff's Office, whose deputies eventually performed a PIT maneuver as Huerfano County deputies boxed the vehicle in. A map shows the route a kidnapping, robbery, and sexual assault suspect took while he allegedly committed a string of crimes down Colorado's Front Range. CBS Deputies stopped the car near Walsenburg and got McSwane out at gunpoint and taken into custody without further incident, according to the sheriff's office. The woman, who was uninjured, told deputies she was carjacked in Aurora about four hours earlier after McSwane allegedly forced himself into her car, threatened her, and, while driving, touched her inappropriately and made her touch him as well. She went on to tell investigators that McSwane threatened to shoot a gas station clerk in Colorado City if she didn't give him a lighter. That clerk was also uninjured. Shane McSwane Pueblo County Sheriff's Office McSwane now faces charges of second-degree kidnapping, two counts of aggravated robbery, unlawful sexual contact, second-degree motor vehicle theft, two counts of menacing with a deadly weapon, felony vehicular eluding, reckless driving, and driving under restraint and could face additional charges, the sheriff's office said. "I want to commend our deputies as well as the Huerfano County Sheriff's Office for their swift, professional, and courageous actions during this highly dangerous situation. Their decisive response saved this victim's life," Pueblo County Sheriff David J. Lucero said in a statement. "We are thankful this ended without harm to the victim and the public." McSwane was booked into the Pueblo County Jail and is due in court Tuesday afternoon. Court records show he has a criminal history going back to 2010 for charges including drugs, escape from custody, theft, domestic violence, public indecency, harassment, and more in Adams, Arapahoe, Broomfield, Denver, El Paso, Jefferson, Larimer, and now Pueblo counties.
