Former Texas A&M Closer Evan Aschenbeck Named Midwest League Pitcher of the Week
Former Texas A&M closer Evan Aschenbeck is in the best stretch of his minor league career since leaving Aggieland. After tossing seven scoreless innings on the road against the Fort Wayne TinCaps, he's been named the Midwest League Pitcher of the Week.
Aschenbeck found his rhythm early, holding the TinCaps hitless until the bottom of the sixth inning. Backed by a 10-1 win, he earned his second victory with the South Bend Cubs, allowing just one hit and striking out five across seven innings. He will be back on the mound on Thursday night against the Lake County Captains.
During his time at Texas A&M, fans grew used to seeing Aschenbeck come in to close out games. But since turning pro, he's proven himself as a quality starter at the High-A level. Time will tell whether he continues climbing the ranks to Double-A and beyond, but for now, he's making the most of every opportunity when his number is called.
