Fourth Avenue flyover reopens for Calgary commuters
The Fourth Avenue flyover, a critical link for commuters into downtown Calgary, is fully reopened ahead of schedule. (Supplied/City of Calgary) Commuters that use the Fourth Avenue flyover to access Calgary's downtown will find the drive to be a bit easier on Tuesday. That's because both lanes have been reopened following more than a year of construction. In April 2024, the bridge, which connects westbound traffic from Memorial Drive to Fourth Avenue S.E., was reduced to one lane for upgrades. Officials say some finishing touches still need to be done, but the major work is complete. 'We're proud to have reached this milestone ahead of schedule for our fellow Calgarians,' said project manager Max Lacroix in a release. 'Calgarians have a busy summer ahead of them and reopening both lanes on the flyover will help ease the congestion that commuters will experience when heading downtown.' Minor work will still require some off-peak (9 a.m. to 3 p.m.) closures of the bridge, but this will not occur during busy summer events like the Calgary Stampede, the city said. The Fourth Avenue flyover rehabilitation cost approximately $12.5 million.
