Diocese of Baton Rouge partners with FranU to support future priests
BATON ROUGE, La. (Louisiana First) — The Diocese of Baton Rouge announced a new partnership with Franciscan Missionaries of Our Lady University (FranU) to support the education and formation of seminarians starting in Fall 2025. The diocese will open the Blessed Stanley Rother House of Formation. It will be at Sacred Heart of Jesus Church in Baton Rouge as part of this initiative. This new house will help seminarians grow in faith, serve in local ministry and prepare for the priesthood. FranU will provide academic and spiritual support to seminarians, helping them deepen their relationship with Christ and better understand their calling. 'We look forward to welcoming these young men to our campus,' said Tina Holland, FranU's president and CEO. 'Our partnership with the diocese continues to be one of the great fruits of our mission to educate and form Franciscan servant leaders, including, now, men that we hope will become servant leaders as future priests of our diocese.' The university said the formation house is named after Blessed Stanley Rother. He was an American priest martyred in Guatemala in 1981. Rother dedicated his life to serving the poor. He was beatified in 2016 and serves as a model of humble and courageous priesthood, the university said. FranU said Fr. Joshua Johnson, pastor of Sacred Heart, will lead the new formation house. Bishop Michael Duca praised his leadership and experience in vocational work, saying it will be key to forming 'men after the heart of Christ.' Men without a college degree will start their formation at the new house. Those with degrees will continue at Notre Dame Seminary in New Orleans, according to the university. Brian Pedraza, director of FranU's theology program, said, 'We're honored and excited to further this mission by becoming a trusted place of seminarian formation to help bring well-formed and holy priests to our land.'
