Popular UK festival angers fans with 'discriminatory' trans toilet policy

Following the UK Supreme Court's ruling in favour of For Women Scotland, Download festival shared its new policy to exclude trans people from their preferred bathrooms Download festival has caused a major uproar online after it made a controversial stance on attendee safety. The rock and metal festival in Donnington Park, Leicestershire, will host headliners Green Day, Poppy, and KoRn featuring Weezer, Sex Pistols with Frank Carter, and more between June 13 and 15. However, instead of the usual guidelines warning of heatwaves and crowds, Download festival has attempted to assure customers on their safety via bathrooms, promising to abide by biological toilets. ‌ The festival said in a statement: "We are proud of the reputation the Download community has in terms of diversity, and will always look to promote the safety and comfort of all festival attendees, including transgender and non-binary customers," before adding that they "will be following the interim guidance by the Equalities and Human Rights Commission on April 25, 2025". ‌ This guidance states that "trans women (biological men) should not be permitted to use the women's facilities and trans men (biological women) should not be permitted to use the men's facilities". Their new implementation appears to be influenced by the UK's Supreme Court's ruling in favour of the so-called 'gender critical' volunteer organisation For Women Scotland. This ruling defined 'woman' as a term categorised by a person's sex alone, thereby excluding the trans and non-binary communities from everyday spaces, such as public bathrooms. ‌ Ironically, the festival will be held right in the middle of Pride month, and trans acts and allies are not happy. Musician and singer, NOAHFINNCE took to socials on May 27 to speak out against the festival's policy. He posted on his Instagram story, writing: "Hey @downloadfest, what the f--k are you doing inviting trans people to play your festival but not allowing them the simple right of using the correct bathroom?" The singer also added that they had "a great time playing last year but will not be attending again if [they] have to queue up for the ladies' bathroom". Outraged over his "trans sisters hav[ing] to risk outing themselves in the men's bathroom," Noah stated that "all this does is put trans people in danger". Having came out to the public as a transgender man in 2017, he called others to join him in holding the festival accountable, writing: "If you're playing @downloadfest, attending it or even just aware of it, say something about it". ‌ NOAHFINNCE also tweeted on X, adding: "What the f--k are you doing? How have you got the gall to invite trans people like me to play your festival and then ban them from using the toilet? If the only way we can piss is by outing ourselves then you've created an unsafe environment". The festival 's previous act, American rock band, Pinkshift, also said that whilst playing at Download last year was "fun," the new decision is "crazy and so unsafe". On their Instagram story, they said: "What f--king music festival polices gendered bathrooms?" They proceeded to thank Noah "for being the only artist [they]'ve seen talk about this… if Download is part of your life then speak up, they think they can get away with discrimination in the ripe year of 2025". In response, Download told NME they "want everyone to feel safe, supported and welcome at the festival" and reassured festival goers that "the majority of toilets will be gender neutral and available to all" and that single sex toilets will also be provided. 'Download Festival has always been and remains for everyone. We sincerely apologise that a previous communication on this was not clear. We are looking forward to seeing you at Download this year," the statement concluded. The Mirror have reached out to Download festival for a response.

Sex Pistols — minus Johnny Rotten — book Fillmore Detroit for first show here since 1996

Three-fourths of the original surviving Sex Pistols will play the Fillmore Detroit on Oct. 4, part of a 13-city North American tour celebrating the band's 1977 album. Guitarist Steve Jones, bassist Glen Matlock and drummer Paul Cook will be joined by fellow Brit and 40-year-old punk veteran Frank Carter for the shows, which will feature a performance of 'Never Mind the Bollocks, Here's the Sex Pistols' in its entirety. The Fillmore stop will be the first Detroit show under the Sex Pistols banner since a 1996 Cobo Arena concert. The current lineup is officially billed as the Sex Pistols featuring Frank Carter. Tickets for the Fillmore Detroit show will go on sale at 10 a.m. April 4, following a presale window next week. Presale registration is open now. The upcoming live run — marking 50 years since the influential punk band's formation — follows a series of U.K. dates last year. The group is also set to tour Australia and Europe. The 2024 shows were largely met with strong reviews. But Rotten, the founding Sex Pistols singer who fell out with the band amid production of a 2022 TV biodrama, has been sharply critical, calling the act 'karaoke" and characterizing it as a cash grab. Sex Pistols announce first North American tour in 22 years

The Sex Pistols, the legendary English punk band that helped the underground subculture of the genre to reach mainstream heights, is going on its first North American tour in more than 20 years. The Pistols last went on a North American tour in 2003, when they were joined by original vocalist John Lyndon (formerly Rotten) . The 2025 iteration of the Pistols — original guitarist Steve Jones, drummer Paul Cook and bassist Glen Matlock joined by frontman Frank Carter (of Gallows, Pure Love and Frank Carter and the Rattlesnakes) — will hit the road on Sept. 16 at a very memorable stage: The Longhorn Ballroom in Dallas, Texas. It was the site of a particularly hostile show for the band when it first toured the U.S. in 1978. Jones told The Associated Press he recalls having "pigs' hooves and bottles and whatnot slung at us by cowboys." It is one of a few dates featured in three "Live in the U.S.A." albums, documenting the band's '78 run: Atlanta, Dallas and San Francisco. The latter will be released on April 25 and captures the show where the band originally called it quits. "We were thinking of breaking up in San Francisco again," Jones joked. The 2025 tour is currently scheduled to conclude Oct. 16 at the Hollywood Palladium in Los Angeles. The band will hit Washington; Philadelphia; Brooklyn, New York; Montreal; Toronto; Cleveland; Detroit; Minneapolis; Denver; Seattle and San Francisco. Additional tour dates will be announced later. Pre-sale opens April 2 and 3. Tickets go on sale April 4 at 10 a.m. local time. They will perform the band's sole album, 1977's "Never Mind the Bollocks, Here's the Sex Pistols Album" live in its entirety as well as other material. So, why tour the U.S. and Canada now? "Why not?" Jones said. "I think everybody needs this band right now. I think the world needs this band right now," Carter said. "And I think definitely America is screaming out for a band like the Sex Pistols." "At the end of the day, we're living in a really, really difficult time. So not only do people want to come and just be entertained, they want to enjoy themselves," he continued. "Punk is an energetic music. It's one where you can go and vent and let your hair down, hopefully in a safe manner. Fingers crossed, no bottles or pigs' hooves." Carter fronted the Sex Pistols last year for a few U.K. dates. The band said they did not reach out to Lydon to see if he wanted to participate in this reunion tour. "The last thing he wants to do is have anything to do with us right now," Jones said, referring to a previous lawsuit between the singer and the band over music use in their TV series "Pistol." The judge ruled against Lydon's opposition. "We wish him the best," Jones said. "Good luck to him," Matlock added. "I wish he thinks, maybe, 'good luck' to us. Probably doesn't. But over the years, John (has had) all our phone numbers, and I can't see many missed calls from him." As for the 2025 tour: Fans shouldn't expect the violence of their 1978 run, but they should anticipate a tighter performance. "We're a bit older but we play just as well, if not better," Matlock said. "And I think that's something that's got a great deal of aplomb that we're going to bring to the public over there." Does this mean there could be new Sex Pistols music in the future? "It's early days," Jones said. "Let's see what happens." The band is currently on a world tour taking them to Japan later this month before stops in New Zealand, Australia and across Europe.

Sex Pistols trio make 'secret' celebratory return to iconic London punk venue 100 Club

On September 20, 1976, the Sex Pistols performed at the opening night of the 100 Club Punk Special, a two-night 'festival' showcasing the UK's emerging punk scene, alongside The Clash, Siouxsie and the Banshees, and Subway Sect. Last night, March 21, three of. the original Pistols - guitarist Steve Jones, bassist Glen Matlock, and drummer Paul Cook - returned to the subterranean Oxford Street venue with Frank Carter on vocals, billed as 'The SPOTS' (Sex Pistols On Tour Secretly), the same name the group used for a short UK tour in the summer of 1977. And according to PA News, an exceedingly good time was had by all. Tickets for the 'secret' gig at the 350 capacity club, a warm up show for the quartet's Teenage Cancer Trust performance at London's Royal Albert Hall on March 24, went on sale via a ballot last week, and sold out almost instantly: Paul Weller, Oasis' Noel Gallagher, and Primal Scream's Bobby Gillespie were among those on the guest list. And while John Lydon may have witheringly described the group's return as "karaoke", the reception that the quartet received suggested that there's a genuine appetite and affection for their nostalgic reunion.'It's a pleasure and a privilege to be here with these legends tonight,' Carter told the crowd following the gig's opening one-two punch of Holidays In The Sun, and New York. The band's set also contained classic singles God Save The Queen, Pretty Vacant, and Anarchy In The UK, plus much-loved anthems such as Bodies and EMI. Towards the end of the show, according to PA News, Carter stage-dived into the crowd, before laughingly saying, "Oh fuck, I forgot you're all fucking 60.' The band will open this year's Teenage Cancer Trust week at the Royal Albert Hall on March 24, with support from Kid Kapichi and The Molotovs. "After an incredible 2024, we are itching to get going again this year and what better way than on home territory at a venue that wouldn't have let us near it back in the day!" Steve Jones stated when the show was announced. "Albert will be turning in his tomb. It's an honour to help this great charity." The full list of shows for the 2025 TCT season is:Mar 24: The Sex Pistols feat.
