(AP Photo/Christophe Ena) PARIS (AP) — Saint-Etienne, one of Ligue 1's most storied clubs, was relegated as Paris Saint-Germain celebrated its title with its fans on the final matchday Saturday. Despite support from 38,000 buoyant spectators at sold-out Stade Geoffroy-Guichard, Saint-Etienne lost to Toulouse 3-2 and could not avoid the drop. Advertisement Saint-Etienne, which dominated French soccer during the 1960s and '70s, joined last-placed Montpellier as the demoted teams. Saint-Etienne immdiately returns to Ligue 2. Le Havre avoided their fate by winning at Strasboug 3-2 thanks to a penalty from Abdoulaye Touré late in added time. Touré, who completed a brace, converted the spot kick with a panenka, allowing his team to leapfrog Reims in the standings and remain in the top flight. Reims will face Metz in the promotion-relegation playoff. Second-division side Metz edged Dunkerque to secure a spot in the two-leg playoff against Ligue 1's 16th-placed team. PSG celebrates Advertisement In Paris, coach Luis Enrique fielded a full-strength squad as PSG celebrated its title at home against Auxerre. PSG was caught cold by a first-half goal from Lassine Sinayoko and turned things around after the interval with efforts from Khvicha Kvaratskhelia, who scored twice, and captain Marquinhos, to win 3-1. PSG won a record-extending 13th Ligue 1 title with six games to spare and is hoping for its first ever treble. In addition to the Champions League final against Inter Milan on May 31, Enrique's team plays Reims in the French Cup final on May 24. With 84 points, PSG set a new record for the most points in a 34-match season. It shared the previous record with Saint-Etienne, which achieved 81 points in the 1969-70 season. Advertisement Nice going to Champions League Nice won the fourth and final spot in Champions League, a ticket to the third preliminary round, by thrashing Brest 6-0. Lille ended fifth and qualified for the Europa League group stage. Lacazette leaves Lyon on a high In his final match with Lyon, Alexandre Lacazette scored his 200th and 201st goals for his boyhood club. Lacazette returned to Lyon in June 2022 and will leave as his contract expires. He left the seven-time French champion in 2017 for a then-club record 60 million euros ($64 million) after joining at age 12. Lacazette scored from the penalty spot and a tap-in as Lyon beat Angers 2-0. Advertisement His brilliance was a rare satisfaction for Lyon fans as the club again missed out on Champions League football. The club's future remains unclear after it was hit in November by a decision to provisionally relegate the side to Ligue 2 following an audit of the club's finances by the French league's soccer watchdog. The DNCG decided Lyon's financial situation must improve by the end of the season. Greenwood shines for Marseille Mason Greenwood scored twice and delivered an assist as Marseille sealed a second-place finish by beating Rennes 4-2. Marseille finished four points ahead third-placed Monaco, which lost to Lens 4-0. Former Manchester United forward Greenwood's 20th and 21st goals helped him finish joint top-scorer in the league with PSG's Ousmane Dembélé. ___ AP soccer:

(AP Photo/Joan Monfort) BARCELONA, Spain (AP) — The two top scorers in the Champions League meet when Barcelona hosts Borussia Dortmund in the first leg of the quarterfinals on Wednesday. Raphinha, having a standout season with 11 Champions League goals for Barcelona, will face Dortmund forward Serhou Guirassy, who has 10 along with Bayern Munich's Harry Kane. Advertisement Both scored when Barcelona won 3-2 at Dortmund in the league phase in December. Barcelona, trying to reach a Champions League semifinal for the first time since the 2018-19 campaign, will also count on Robert Lewandowski, the Spanish league's top scorer with 25 goals. The 36-year-old striker has nine goals in the European competition this season. Lewandowski scored 17 of his 103 career goals in the Champions League for Dortmund over three seasons from 2011-14. Schlotterbeck out Dortmund will be without defender Nico Schlotterbeck because of a meniscus tear in his left knee. The club announced Monday he will miss the rest of the season. Advertisement In-form teams Also Wednesday, Paris Saint-Germain, seeking an elusive first Champions League title, hosts Aston Villa in a meeting between two of Europe's hottest teams. PSG finished only 15th in the league phase in January — the lowest of any of the quarterfinalists — but since then has 16 wins in 17 games across all competitions. The lone setback was an unlucky 1-0 loss to Liverpool at Parc des Princes in the first leg of the round of 16, when it outplayed its opponent for most of the match. Villa, coached by Unai Emery, has won seven straight coming into its first game at this stage of the competition for 42 years. Advertisement Emery was previously PSG's coach for one of the biggest humiliations in Champions League history, when it squandered a 4-0 first-leg lead against Barcelona in the round of 16 eight years ago. The Spanish side won the second-leg 6-1, eliminating PSG. In the 2018-19 season after Emery's departure, PSG experienced another Champions League blow when current Villa forward Marcus Rashford scored a penalty deep into stoppage-time as Manchester United eliminated the French club in the last 16 on away goals. Tuesday's results On Tuesday, Arsenal beat defending champion Real Madrid 3-0 in London, while Inter Milan won 2-1 at Bayern Munich. ___ AP soccer:

(Franck Fife, Pool Photo via AP) PARIS (AP) — Paris Saint-Germain coach Luis Enrique shrugged off talk of his side being the favorite against Aston Villa ahead of their Champions League quarterfinal on Wednesday. While PSG has been a regular in the last eight since cash-rich Qatari investor QSI bought the club 14 years ago, and reached the semifinals last season, Villa has not been in this stage of the competition since 1983. Advertisement 'People said we had no chance against Liverpool (in the round of 16), so in my mind there is no such thing as favorites," Luis Enrique said at a news conference on Tuesday. "It's a very open and difficult match for both sides. I know it will be intense.' PSG wrapped up a record-extending 13th Ligue 1 title on Saturday with six games to spare. Villa is pushing for a top-four finish in the Premier League and is on a seven-game winning run heading to Paris for the first leg. Luis Enrique, who guided Barcelona to the treble in 2015, is bracing himself for a tactical headache against a Villa side coached by Spanish countryman Unai Emery. 'Their strongpoint is their versatility, so it's hard to figure out how they're going to play. They can play with a low block (and) they bring the ball out brilliantly," he said. "Their biggest strength is how they attack from the back and reach the second line of attack quickly. It then becomes very hard to contain when teams are breaking from midfield.' Advertisement Emery is a respected opponent from the days when both men were coaching in Spain. Emery won the Europa League a record four times — three with Sevilla and one with Villarreal — and guided unheralded Villarreal to the Champions League semifinals in 2022. 'He deserves more recognition because he's a great coach with limitless energy," Luis Enrique said. "He probably already knows everything I am planning to do.' Villa could line up with attacking midfielder Marco Asensio, who is on loan from PSG. So Luis Enrique was asked if he has a problem with the fact Asensio is free to face PSG. 'On the contrary, I am delighted that Marco can play," he said. "I know him perfectly well, he's a player of the highest level, with great technical ability.' Advertisement Although PSG is unbeaten in domestic soccer this season, the last three matches have all seen sloppy first-half performances. Luis Enrique looked stunned when his side fell 2-0 down inside the first 30 minutes against second-tier Dunkerque last week in a French Cup semifinal, and he warned his players about lapses in concentration. 'The Champions League does not allow you to switch off for one second," he said. "You can't reach the quarterfinal without being completely focused.' PSG will be without captain Marquinhos due to suspension for the first leg, and the defense remains vulnerable to set-pieces and corners. But Emery, who coached PSG from 2016-18, probably already knew that. ___ AP soccer:

(AP Photo/Michel Euler) PARIS (AP) — Unbeaten Paris Saint-Germain has won Ligue 1 in early April with six games to spare. Only the 2016 PSG side has won the French league earlier. Here's a closer look at how PSG clinched a record-extending 13th Ligue 1 title under coach Luis Enrique, who was criticized at the start of the campaign because of the team's ineffective style of play. Advertisement No Mbappé but more teamwork Time and again, Kylian Mbappé bailed out PSG with late equalizers or winners during his final seasons with the club. For all of Mbappé's undoubted ability and a club-record 256 goals, his heroics masked glaring deficiencies elsewhere. The midfield was a bit soft and the defense often panicked under pressure in big games, with those factors leaving their goalkeeper too often exposed. After Mbappé left for Real Madrid in the offseason, Luis Enrique had work to do. He set things straight by saying Mbappé could not be replaced as a scorer and that results had to come through far better teamwork. He preferred to have several players chipping in regularly with goals, rather than spending another fortune on a superstar scorer who might also take time to settle in. Advertisement Young players such as 22-year-old Bradley Barcola, who has 18 goals this season, and 19-year-old Désiré Doué became symbols of a new-look PSG less dependant on big names. Ruthless competion for places Under Luis Enrique there has been no pampering of egos and preferential treatment for stars like in previous years when the likes of Neymar, Edinson Cavani and Zlatan Ibrahimovic were overly indulged. Luis Enrique proved that point with a bold decision to drop forward Ousmane Dembélé on disciplinary grounds for a big Champions League game at Arsenal. PSG lost that game 2-0 but the Spanish coach, although sometimes perceived as stubborn, made it crystal clear he was looking for dedication in his squad and he was non-negotiable on this point. Advertisement He was unhappy with Dembélé's level of commitment at the time. So rather than shy away and meekly acquiesce to player power like some of his predecessors, Luis Enrique stood by his decision and was eventually proved right as Dembélé's form soared. Dembélé's transformation Before this season, Dembélé was widely seen as a lightning-fast and skilful right winger who got into great scoring positions but was a wasteful finisher. His previous season-best goal tally stood at a modest 14 in 48 games overall for Barcelona during the 2018-19 campaign, and he had only once reached double figures in the league with 12 for Rennes in 2015-16. Advertisement But a decisive tactical switch by Luis Enrique paid huge dividends. He released Dembélé from his restrictive role as a winger and played him through the middle in a roaming role which also allowed him to drift to the wings. The result has been emphatic, with Dembélé topping the Ligue 1 scoring charts with 21 goals and 32 overall. Kvaratskhelia's arrival Luis Enrique succeeded in signing flying winger Khvicha Kvaratskhelia from Napoli at the second attempt after failing last year. Even though PSG was moving away from the galactico era, there was still something missing in attack during an inconsistent first part of the season where PSG wasted chances galore. Advertisement Kvaratskhelia joined for 70 million euros ($72 million) and has added skill, goals, and assists. Kvaratskhelia's versatility also allowed Luis Enrique to deploy him on either wing and therefore enhance his attacking options. Perhaps most crucially of all, the Georgia forward has a tremendous work ethic and has led by example by constantly tracking back to help out defenders. Super-sub Ramos and Doué's emergence Could there be a more unselfish team player than striker Gonçalo Ramos? Many players of his scoring ability might sulk or complain about being on the bench. But the Portugal forward's attitude has been irreproachable. Advertisement Furthermore, he has been clinical when given his chance and has contributed 14 goals in 30 games. Doué joined PSG from Rennes for around 50 million euros ($55 million) in the offseason, which appeared a hefty fee for an unproven young player. But Luis Enrique, who coached Lionel Messi, Luis Suárez and Neymar when Barcelona won the Champions League in 2015, saw in him a game-changing ability. His hunch was backed up by the fact Rennes has a proven ability to develop young players, with Dembélé also coming through the Brittany club's rich youth ranks a decade ago. Doué has proved an overwhelmingly good signing with his ability to improvise in tight situations, his skilful touches and his runs from deep. Advertisement He has also contributed 11 goals and showed remarkably good composure against Liverpool in a high-octane Champions League round-of-16 game last month. Four PSG players have scored 10 or more goals overall this season, twice as many as last season. Rather than relying on Mbappé and ageing stars like Ibrahimovic and Messi, PSG has a young and vibrant attack and the foundations are in place for a brighter future. ___ AP soccer:

He signed his first contract in February and recently scored his first goal for the club. 21 The number of league goals by Ousmane Dembélé this season, a career-best for him. He is unlikely to beat Kylian Mbappé's best tally of 35 but it is also indicative of better teamwork at PSG. Advertisement 26 The number of goals conceded by PSG in 28 games. The goalkeeping has been inconsistent at times, though, with No. 1 Gianluigi Donnarumma making occasional blunders. 28 The number of matches without losing so far for PSG, which includes 23 wins and five draws.
