Overwhelming amount of dogs leaves St. Tammany Animal Shelter in ‘Mayday' Mode
ST. TAMMANY PARISH, La. (WGNO) — Following a wave of owners dropping off their pets and abandoned animals found within the community, the St. Tammany Parish Animal Shelter has exceeded 200 dogs in the shelter system, which is designed to only hold 120. 'That creates a whole bunch of other issues when we're doubling up dogs in kennels. Disease spread. There's a lot of things that come secondary and tertiary to overcrowding,' Shelter Director Rob Bremer said. Street closures announced ahead of New Orleans' French Quarter Festival Of these 215 animals, about 100 of them are ready to be adopted or fostered now. Of those 100, the six that have stayed at the shelter the longest have until April 22 to be rescued before euthanasia becomes an option. 'Ultimately, it comes down to how do I want to make more space right? The way I did it, and the way that seemed the most fair to me was the longest time,' Bremer said. Adoption fees at the shelter normally cost $75, but during this time, discounts will be offered ranging from 1/3 off to 100% off. If you're interested in fostering instead, the shelter will provide you with everything you may need, including a crate and the food. 'We are trying to take down all the barriers that we can to really get in their faces and get their information out there, and hopefully setting them up with a forever home,' Bremer amount of dogs leaves St. Tammany Animal Shelter in 'Mayday' Mode La. BELLE CHASSE, La. (WGNO) — Officials with the Belle Chasse Bridge and Tunnel Replacement Project have announced a delay in the Belle Chasse Bridge tolling date. The tolling for the Belle Chasse Bridge is now set to start on April 16, with bridge officials citing a 'delay in construction activities.' The date is still reportedly subject to change due to weather and inspections. Street closures announced ahead of New Orleans' French Quarter Festival Drivers are being advised to set up a GeauxPass account to get a required transponder sticker. 'Using a GeauxPass offers ease of conveyance over the bridge and a reduced toll rate in every category. Drivers who opt not to use a GeauxPass will receive a toll invoice mailed to the address connected to their vehicle registration,' a news release states. Traffic prep announced ahead of Ponchatoula Strawberry Fest Bridge officials said Plaquemines Parish residents can qualify for resident toll rates by using GeauxPass, operating a class 1 vehicle and providing a driver's license and vehicle registration with a Plaquemines Parish address. French Quarter Fest: What to know before you go
French Quarter Festival is back this weekend, April 10-13, taking over the heart of downtown New Orleans with about 300 acts spread across nearly two dozen stages. Why it matters: The fest is the city's largest free festival. The big picture: The festival brought an estimated 950,000 to the Quarter last year. It's a reliable gig for hundreds of local musicians and dozens of food vendors, not to mention all the French Quarter restaurants and shops that will benefit from the extra foot traffic all weekend long. If you like New Orleans music, you'll enjoy the lineup. Headliners include Kermit Ruffins & the Barbecue Swingers, The Dirty Dozen Brass Band, and Irma Thomas. An evening concert series at the JAX Lot has Chapel Hart, the Original Pinettes Brass Band with Mia X, Little Freddie King and Rockin' Dopsie and the Zydeco Twisters. Other acts include Charmaine Neville, Delfeayo Marsalis and the Uptown Jazz Orchestra, The Soul Rebels, Honey Island Swamp Band, Cupid and the Dance Party Express Band, Jelly Joseph, and hundreds more. Pro tip: Don't skip the small stages. With 22 of them spread around the Quarter, it's easy to get sucked into the big crowds, but you'd lose out on some of the intimate moments still possible in this popular festival. Try to spread out especially on Saturday and Sunday, when crowds are at their largest. Dig in: You won't go hungry. Official vendors concentrate in Jackson Square, the Old U.S. Mint and along the riverfront. More than 70 vendors are lined up to feed the festival masses this year, including event newcomer Chubbie's Famous Fried Chicken. Kids' programming returns on Saturday and Sunday. Young fest-goers can participate in STEM activities, which the Riverboat City of New Orleans is hosting for the first time this year. If you go: The fest is free, but VIP options, which include designated viewing areas and other perks, are available. Expect road closures, bag checks and additional security measures throughout the French Quarter. Go deeper. For the late-night crowd, French Quarter Fest's After Dark series returns this year. Former New York Police Department Chief Bill Bratton completes analysis on French Quarter security
NEW ORLEANS (WGNO) — Former New York Police Department Chief William Bratton has completed his assessment of New Orleans security after working with the New Orleans Police Department through the Super Bowl and Carnival. According to New Orleans Police and Justice Foundation Chairman of the Board Darrah Schaefer, these recommendations will start with a hardening of the French Quarter, primarily on Bourbon Street. Additional arrests made in connection with St. Tammany Parish Sheriff's Office sergeant's death 'The focus was on vehicle ramming incidents once again because of the January 1 attack. They did do a scan for French Quarter Festival while they were in town. They were in town for six to eight weeks. It was a team of six to eight of them at all times and these are the top security experts possibly in the world,' Schaefer said. Schaefer says Teneo's best safety recommendation to harden Bourbon Street will be to restrict vehicle traffic significantly, except for required deliveries or emergency services. However, the conversation about what system works best is still up for discussion. 'We have to have people man the gates for example to raise and lower them and have an understanding for what types of vehicles the type of day that works best,' Schaefer said. Expert discusses tariff effects on New Orleans consumers Balancing accessibility and safety is key to some business owners on Bourbon Street, such as Patrick's Bar Vin owner Patrick Van Hoorebeek, who says compromises may be needed if they want to secure Bourbon Street for the future. 'I believe that we can find a way to adjust that and maybe start to do the delivery in the morning like starting at 6 o'clock. I know all those guys and delivery drivers are going to hate me for saying that but that's the thing. It's got to be a compromise,' Van Hoorebeek Orleans police connect burglaries at homes 'For Sale' Dense fog advisory in effect early Tuesday Former New York Police Department Chief Bill Bratton completes analysis on French Quarter security Pelicans use balanced scoring to send the 76ers to their 5th straight loss, 112-99 Expert discusses tariff effects on New Orleans consumers Copyright 2025 Nexstar Media, Inc.
