Frenkie de Jong expects to sign new Barcelona contract: ‘They want it and I want it'

Barcelona midfielder Frenkie de Jong says he expects to sign a new contract with the La Liga champions. The Athletic reported in March that the Netherlands international was in talks with Barcelona over a new deal, with his current terms set to expire in a year. 'I think I will sign a new contract, but you can never say that with a hundred per cent certainty. If everything goes well, then it will happen,' De Jong told Dutch outlet Voetbalzone while on duty with his country. 'They want it and I want it, so normally you can work it out.' Advertisement De Jong made 46 appearances for Barcelona in the 2024-25 season as his side claimed La Liga and Copa del Rey titles, while also reaching the Champions League semi-final, where they suffered a 7-6 aggregate defeat by Inter. Negotiations over a new deal between Barcelona and De Jong's camp began in March, after the club sent a proposal to extend his terms at the start of 2024, but club sources — who asked to remain anonymous to protect relationships — said they did not receive a response at the time. Barcelona signed De Jong from Ajax for £86million ($116.4m) in 2019 and established his position in their midfield immediately. However, as one of the highest earners in the squad, the 28-year-old's contract became a problem for the Catalan club during a period of financial turmoil, club sources added. Manchester United agreed to pay Barcelona a guaranteed fee of €75million (£63million, $75million) for De Jong in the summer of 2022, as reported by The Athletic, but the transfer did not materialise. De Jong later criticised Catalan media for the reporting of his situation at the club, dismissing suggestions he was earning '€40million' and said they 'made up a story'. An ankle injury suffered in April 2024 sidelined De Jong for over six months, and speaking upon his return last year, the midfielder said he wondered 'whether I would ever fully recover'. 'There was uncertainty about how long it would take and whether my ankle would be completely the same as it was before,' De Jong said at the time. The Dutchman has made 259 appearances for Barcelona, scoring 19 goals and assisting 23. ()

FC Barcelona Star De Jong Reveals Huge Decision On Future

FC Barcelona star Frenkie de Jong publicly revealed that he plans to renew his contract at the club ... More while speaking to VZ. FC Barcelona star Frenkie de Jong publicly revealed that he plans to renew his contract at the club while speaking to VZ. The Dutchman joined the Catalans from Ajax as part of a $85 million (€75 million) transfer in 2019, which is the year he was voted the best midfielder in the Champions League after the Amsterdam outfit beat the likes of Juventus and Real Madrid on the way to the elite European competition's semifinals. Amid the pandemic, he agreed to an extension which saw him defer parts of his payment. This arrangement made him the highest paid member of Hansi Flick's squad, and De Jong has often been linked with exits from the club. In 2022, he perhaps came closest to leaving when Barca reportedly accepted an offer from Manchester United. When all was said and done, however, De Jong stayed put and has just completed arguably his strongest season in Blaugrana. Returning from an ankle knock which kept him on the sidelines through the Netherlands' run to the Euro semifinals and the start of 2024/2025, he returned to Flick's first XI and dislodged Marc Casado to partner Pedri as their team completed an impressive domestic treble. Given that his contract expires in just over 12 months, getting De Jong to renew is a pressing matter of business for Sporting Director Deco after he managed to get key players including Pedri and Lamine Yamal to sign on the dotted line. If comments that De Jong made to VZ are anything to go by, Deco and Culers shouldn't worry that the number 21 will leave for free next year. 'I think I'm going to renew for Barca,' De Jong said. I can't be one hundred percent sure but if everything goes well it will be done. My intention is to renew this summer, but we'll see what happens. It is a negotiation and you cannot say when. The important thing is that both parties want it and I think we will reach an agreement.' One obstacle possibly getting in the way of this development could be that De Jong is reportedly in a battle to leave his agent, which is a matter that he 'can't say anything about' at the moment. 'Now I'm focused with the national team and then we'll see,' he stated on this. De Jong feels that constant complaints or analysis of his form are exaggerated 'too much'. 'I had a long injury and I suffered a lot with my ankle, it was difficult but I'm fine now. But before the injury I was playing very well but maybe we didn't have such a good team and you didn't see it as much. People now notice my game more,' he explained. 'Before I got injured I was in the best moment of my game. I don't think this year I did much better than the previous ones, but the titles we have won and the victories have given more visibility to my game,' he reiterated. While as said it was a successful campaign for FC Barcelona that yielded three Spanish trophies, there was disappointment in the Champions League where Flick's men fell to beaten finalist Inter Milan in the last four. 'It hurt a lot to lose against Inter. When you're so close to the final and you end up failing, it's always painful. It wasn't to be and the Champions League was deservedly won by PSG. They deserved the title,' De Jong said about this.

Frenkie de Jong at risk of Barcelona summer exit

Barcelona need to sell this summer in order to bring in their desired signings, and there is chance for a major departure. Ronald Araujo could go, as could Frenkie de Jong – despite the fact that he has appeared destined to remain in Catalonia for at least one more season. De Jong is out of contract in 2026, and as such, Barcelona have made moves to agree a new deal to ensure that he cannot leave for free at the end of the season. But despite previous optimism, things are not looking so clear now. Frenkie de Jong contract situation has stagnated As reported by Relevo, there has been no movement on de Jong's contract situation of late. And as a result, there are now more chances for him to leave Barcelona during the summer transfer window. Image via EFE Barcelona are not actively looking to sell de Jong, but they are open to a deal if it is favourable in a financial sense. And there is chances for this to happen, with the report noting that there are several clubs keeping tabs on the situation. Barcelona prepared to overrule Hansi Flick with possible sale Things with de Jong had looked promising due to his resurgence in 2025, with him having established himself as a regular starter again. Hansi Flick has been delighted with the Netherlands international, but despite the fact that he would not welcome a sale, Barcelona are prepared to overrule their manager if a good offer arrives. It will be very interesting to see how things play out with de Jong over the summer. If he does not sign a new contract in the next couple of months, the chances of him leaving on a free in 2026 would increase significantly. And this possibility is one that would be a disaster for the La Liga champions.

Emerging Barcelona midfield talent reaches agreement with Qatari side

Barcelona are set to suffer a quiet but significant loss this summer with Pau Prim, one of the brightest talents from Barça Atletic, set to join Qatari club Al Sadd, according to Mundo Deportivo. The 19-year-old midfielder, long regarded as a potential first-team pivot, has decided to leave the club after rejecting a renewal offer from Barça. Advertisement Unless there is a last-minute twist, which appears virtually impossible, Prim will bid farewell to the Blaugrana after the final matchday of the First Federation season, where Barca Atletic take on Unionistas de Salamanca. Interestingly, he won't even feature in the squad for that match. Since rejecting the financial terms of the renewal proposal, Prim has been sidelined from team selections, though he continued training with the group. Reasons behind his exit His decision to walk away from Barcelona comes down to two primary reasons: finances and opportunity. The contract extension offered by the club, which ran until June 2025, was not attractive enough for Prim or his representatives. Pau Prim is all set to join Al Sadd. With the likes of Marc Bernal, Pedri, Frenkie de Jong, Gavi, Marc Casado, and even Eric Garcia capable of operating in midfield, the competition for minutes was simply too fierce. Advertisement It is worth noting that Al Sadd had already shown interest in Prim during the January transfer window. Talks back then did not materialise into a move, but the situation escalated when he was frozen out of matchday squads. From that moment, his exit became inevitable. Prior to his exclusion, Prim had played 16 matches this season, guiding the team to a stable position. Barcelona's loss could be Al Sadd's gain. The Qatari side have secured a technically gifted, intelligent midfielder who was once tipped to take over Sergio Busquets' role in the long run.
