Breaking Down 3G's $9B Deal to Buy Skechers
The trade war was expected to stop dealmaking in its tracks — with many bankers and would-be buyers saying it was just impossible to price a company given all the sudden economic uncertainty. Nobody told 3G Capital, which agreed to buy Skechers in a $9 billion deal that ranks as the largest footwear acquisition in memory. More from WWD In Surprise Move, Skechers to Go Private in $9 Billion Deal With 3G Capital Martha Stewart Goes for Gold in Libertine Coat, Talks Being 'The Original Influencer' at the 2024 FNAAs Ashley Park Returns to Broadway Roots in New Skechers Campaign [To listen to the episode, .] In this episode of 'From the Newsroom,' Footwear News senior editor Stephen Garner breaks down the mega deal and how it could change the massive sneaker brand. Garner said analysts are seeing the deal as an exit strategy for chairman and chief executive officer Robert Greenberg, who founded the brand in 1992 and whose family controls 60 percent of voting rights at the company. While the deal is set to close in the third quarter, Garner said there are still plenty of question marks on how it plays out for Skechers. For one, 3G is getting into the footwear business with a mega deal. 'They're a private equity firm based in Brazil and most of their investments so far have been in food,' Garner said. 'They've pumped money into Burger King, into Tim Horton's, into Firehouse Subs, into Kraft Heinz. So this is actually their first…venture into fashion. I don't know if this is a sign of more to come from them or they're just trying to dip their toe into something different.' Kohl's Is Trapped in a ‘Perfect Storm'
In this episode of 'From the Newsroom,' host Evan Clark welcomes WWD's retail editor, David Moin, to discuss the abrupt firing of Kohl's chief executive officer Ashley Buchanan after less than four months in the role. Buchanan was terminated for cause due to an alleged undisclosed romantic relationship with a woman connected to Kohl's vendors — potentially leading to the company ordering from those vendors. [To listen to the episode, .] More from WWD WME Fashion Opens Applications for Second Cycle of Incubator Program for Creative and Executive Careers in Fashion Anthropologie and Moleskine Partner to Recognize Emerging Artists Ex-Abercrombie & Fitch CEO Mike Jeffries Mentally Unfit to Stand Trial, Per Court Moin emphasized the unusual nature of a CEO being fired so quickly, especially as Buchanan was in the midst of developing a turnaround plan for the struggling department store chain. Moin said Kohl's has faced difficulties despite previous turnaround efforts and is now facing a 'perfect storm' of challenges, including a leadership vacuum, uncertain consumer spending, potential tariffs, declining sales and increasing debt. The speakers discuss Kohl's previous strategies, such as introducing big-name brands and the Sephora partnership, and suggest that focusing on strengthening their private label brands such as Simply Vera and Sonoma could be a promising path forward. Aussie comedian Dave 'Hughesy' Hughes scores invite to huge celebrity wedding in London and reveals why he nearly didn't RSVP to A-list nuptials
Dave 'Hughesy' Hughes has nabbed an invite to one of the biggest weddings of the year. The Aussie comedian, 54, revealed in a chat with podcast From the Newsroom that he would be attending Spice Girl Mel B 's wedding in the coming months. Dave, who met the pop icon while filming the 2022 season of The Masked Singer, told hosts Andrew Bucklow and Bronte Coy that he nearly missed the invitation on account of filming I'm A Celebrity... Get Me Out Of Here. 'When I was in the jungle, it was a month with no contact with anyone,' he shared. The funnyman revealed that it was only when he was checking his emails after returning home from the reality show that he came across the invite, which had been sent by Mel B's wedding planner not long after he entered the jungle. He added: 'I quickly emailed back, "yes … we want to go to the wedding!"' The timing couldn't be better for the comedian, who revealed that the nuptials coincided with a pre-planned trip to London in July for a slew of shows. 'I swear to God, we'd booked this holiday (in advance) and the wedding is a day in-between a couple of gigs I'm doing, so it's a perfectly situated wedding date,' he told the podcast hosts. Mel B is set to tie the knot to hairstylist Rory McPhee at St. Paul's Cathedral and is expected to invite a number of A-list stars to the wedding festivities. The Spice Girls singer, 48, who announced her engagement to Rory, 35, in November in 2022, recently hinted that the two have confirmed a wedding date. And in a recent interview with The Sun, she explained: 'As I have an MBE I am allowed to marry at St Paul's. They only do a small number of weddings a year so we are on the waiting list.' 'Because I have been married twice before we talked about that. I was very open and honest. I take marriage seriously and am actually very traditional. I spoke about how I was married for ten very abusive years.' Elsewhere, Mel claimed the Spice Girls - Emma Bunton, Victoria Beckham, Mel C and Geri Halliwell - are too 'old' to be walking down the aisle as her bridesmaids. Mel and Rory have been dating since 2019 and, in 2021, Rory proposed with a £100,000 (AUD $206,646) engagement ring. One insider told the Sun hat Mel said 'yes' immediately, adding: 'But it was incredibly emotional because after everything she has been through, it was a really big moment for her.' Mel has previously said: 'Because I have an MBE I can get married at the same place Princess Diana married Charles. I'm still waiting to here back from St. Paul's Cathedral in London. 'We have put all our forms in and we are just waiting on them to give us the day.' The chapel at St Paul's Cathedral is reserved for exclusive use by those with an MBE or OBE. Mel received an MBE in 2022 for her services to charitable causes and vulnerable women. Mel has also also delighted fans by revealing that a certain Spice Girl would be designing her wedding dress. 'Once I get the date, I will go wedding dress shopping. Victoria Beckham wants to make me a dress,' she said. Mel has been married twice previously, first to Dutch dancer Jimmy Gulzar and second to film producer Stephen Belafonte.

Hughesy scores invite to huge celebrity wedding in London
Dave Hughes has revealed he almost missed an invite to one of this year's biggest celebrity weddings because he was in the I'm a Celeb jungle. Speaking to podcast, From the Newsroom, Hughesy mentioned that he has been invited to Spice Girl Mel B's wedding in London in a few months time. 'When I was in the jungle, it was a month with no contact with anyone,' he explained. It wasn't until a few weeks after he'd been voted off the show that Hughesy finally got around to checking all the emails he had missed while filming the reality program. 'One of them was from Mel B's wedding planner who said, 'Do you want to go to the wedding?'' Hughesy added, noting it was sent not long after he entered the jungle, about six weeks prior. 'I quickly emailed back, 'yes … we want to go to the wedding!'' It just so happened that the comedian and his wife had already booked a holiday that would take them to London around the time of the wedding. 'We are going to London for three weeks in July and I've got some gigs booked over there,' he told 'I swear to God, we'd booked this holiday (in advance) and the wedding is a day in-between a couple of gigs I'm doing, so it's a perfectly situated wedding date.' Hughesy, who became good mates with Mel B while filming The Masked Singer on Channel 10, said he's excited to hopefully rub shoulders with some famous people at the soiree. 'Let's hope all the Spice Girls are there, and Simon Cowell. I reckon he could do with me what he did with One Direction back in the day!' the comedian joked. What we know about Mel B's wedding Mel B is tying the knot with hairstylist Rory McPhee, with the pair announcing their engagement in October 2022. They're getting married at St. Paul's Cathedral in London, the same church where Princess Diana and then-Prince Charles were married. 'As I have an MBE (Member of the Most Excellent Order of the British Empire) I am allowed to marry at St Paul's,' the singer told The Sun about the exclusive location. Mel B has confirmed that all of the Spice Girls will be invited, with one in particular playing a special role on the big day. 'Victoria (Beckham) actually designed my dress and my mum's dress,' she told the US Today show. 'It's such a beautiful honour to get.' It'll be one of three dresses that Mel plans to wear that day. 'I don't think it would be fair to just have one … at least three, right?' she told the Today show hosts. 'One to actually get married in, which is the proper ceremony … and then maybe I want to change out of that and be a bit more less … You know, I actually don't know!' What else did Hughesy say? On the From the Newsroom podcast, Hughesy opened up about his time on I'm a Celeb, revealing there was one star in particular who liked to 'self-pleasure' in the jungle. He also spoke about his 16-year-old son's reaction to seeing him perform stand-up comedy for the first time ever during this year's Melbourne International Comedy Festival.

Comedian Dave Hughes has scored an invite to one of the year's most exclusive celebrity weddings, where he'll mingle with global stars at Spice Girl Mel B's London ceremony. Hughesy revealed he almost missed the invitation while filming I'm a Celebrity... Get Me Out of Here! due to a month-long communication blackout.
