Sandro Wagner to become new Augsburg head coach
Florian Plettenberg reports that Sandro Wagner is set to become the new head coach at Augsburg, replacing Jess Thorup. Wagner (37) will leave his role as assistant manager to Julian Nagelsmann following Germany's participation at the UEFA Nations League finals next month, having previously worked with the U20 national team. Augsburg announced in April that they had parted ways with Thorup after analysing their season, where they finished 12th – nine points behind Mainz, who qualified for the final European spot. At one point, it looked as though the Fuggerstadt would go on to qualifying for Europe after an excellent run but without a win in their last five, they ultimately dropped off the pace. Augsburg part ways with head coach Jens Thorup
Augsburg have announced that they have parted ways with head coach Jens Thorup after the team had analysed their season. Following Thorup out of the door is sporting director Marinko Jurendic. Since replacing Enrico Maaßen as head coach in the 2023/24 season, Thorup has averaged 1.3 points per game and turned the Fuggerstadt into a strong defensive unit. This season, the club even came close to fighting for a European spot, but ended the season on a five-game winless run and finished 12th, with it viewed as their third-best season ever. Advertisement However, despite the solid defensive aspect of their season, it is seen that this is not good enough, and there is a belief within the club that more could have been done, reports kicker. Augsburg now want to take the next step as a club and wants to shake things up with their next coaching hire. Sky Germany reports that Sandro Wagner is Augsburg's preferred candidate to replace Thorup. The former striker is said to have already agreed terms with a Bundesliga side over becoming their head coach in the summer.
