Mosquito test positive for West Nile virus in Fulton County
CUBA, Ill. (WMBD) — A pool of mosquitoes from Fulton County tested positive for the West Nile Virus.
The pool that tested positive was from Cuba and was collected between May 19 and May 22, according to Fulton County Health Department Administrator Katie Lynn.
'West Nile virus activity has been present in the state, and we expect to see activity again this year,' Lynn said. 'These findings should serve as a reminder to citizens to take precautions to prevent contracting this mosquito-borne disease.'
The mosquito can get infected by feeding on a bird that is infected with the virus.
Most people infected with the virus will show no symptoms, but about one in five will experience symptoms, including fevers, headaches and body aches. Serious symptoms can also lead to death.
According to the health department, the best way to avoid the virus is to reduce the number of mosquitoes around your home and to avoid mosquito bites.
