Raise a toast: It's World Passion Fruit Martini Day!
Get ready to raise your glasses today, on the May 28th. This day marks World Passion Fruit Martini Day, a celebration of one of the UK's most beloved cocktails. This vibrant drink, also known as the Pornstar Martini, was crafted in 2002 by bartender Douglas Ankrah, at the Townhouse bar in London. Pornstar Martini also topped 2024's Google's top 10 most searched recipes. It is said, Ankrah was looking for a way to fetch a modern and playful twist to the classic Martini. Blending vanilla vodka, passion fruit purée, and a shot of Prosecco, the flavours were inspired by the bartender's childhood place- South Africa. In 2021, Funkin Cocktails, a UK-based brand known for its 100% natural fruit purées, syrups, and cocktail mixers, established this day to honour the cocktail's tropical allure and its rise to cultural icon status. With its sweet-tart flavour and eye-catching presentation, the Passion Fruit Martini has captivated taste buds worldwide. So, whether you're at a night-club partying your heart out, or hosting an in-house gathering, opting this serve is definitely. Ingredients for this tropical drink, is no joke. Each adds a character, a note that elevates the experience. For example, the vanilla vodka, adds a smooth, and slightly sweet base with warm vanilla notes that complement the tartness of passion fruit. A sweet, tart and intensely fruity flavour is delivered by the main character: passion fruit puree and its liqueur version balances the sweetness and richness. However, the classic drink's ingredients vary a tad bit from one bar to another. Here is the classic passion fruit martini, as was curated by Ankrah, for you to enjoy: 2 spoons vanilla sugar 50ml vanilla vodka 12.5ml passion fruit liqueur 25ml passion fruit puree Passion fruit slice for garnishing 50ml champagne Shake the first four ingredients and fine strain into a martini glass. Finish with a slice of passion fruit. Serve with a side of champagne in a shot glass. Written by Rajlekha Roy Burman

I tried passionfruit martinis from Aldi, M&S, Tesco and more
But, as with most things, the flavour can differ slightly when made by different brands and as you go from bar to bar. I decided to try a variety of passionfruit martinis from supermarkets, including a branded version, to see which is the best to have at home – here's what I thought. I compared passionfruit martini cocktails from Aldi, M&S and more All prices are correct at the time of writing but may change. Aldi Aldi's Passion Fruit Martini is packaged in an eye-catching bottle (Image: Newsquest) The bottle of Passion Fruit Martini (£7.49) from Aldi is very vibrant and is enough to catch your eye on the shelf. This particular cocktail had a very strong passionfruit smell to it, and I instantly knew it smelled how I'd expect when ordering one at a cocktail bar. It was very strong in flavour, and I would've preferred it to be a bit weaker, as it was overpowering. Next time, I might try adding some lemonade to it to weaken it. Having said that, it did taste how it should, it was just a bit too strong for me. Rating: 5/10 M&S The Passion Star Martini Cocktail (£6) from M&S has a more classic-looking bottle design, making it ideal to give as a gift or to take over to a friend's house. M&S' version tasted weaker but smelled sweeter than the Aldi version (Image: Newsquest) This cocktail smelled sweeter than the Aldi version and I was surprised to see how clear the liquid was, a contrast to the deeper orange of the rest I tried. It tasted weaker so the passionfruit taste didn't come through as strong but it had a light fizz which I enjoyed and reminded me of the prosecco shot that's usually served alongside the cocktail in a bar. It's unfamiliar taste at the end put me off a little so I've scored it slightly less than Aldi. Rating: 4/10 Morrisons Morrisons has a new cocktail range, which includes their take on a Passion Fruit Martini. Other bottles include Cosmo and Bliss on the Beach (£6 each or two for £10). These bottles are really striking and add a nice touch, ideal if you're gifting it to someone or offering it to loved ones when hosting. Morrisons' version of the Passion Fruit Martini was my favourite from the few I tried as it had just the right amount of flavour and wasn't overpowering. The Passion Fruit Martini from Morrisons was my favourite (Image: Newsquest) It smelled a bit like the Aldi and M&S versions combined so was a medium strength of smell and not off-putting. This one also had a light fizz which was a nice addition. Rating: 9/10 Recommended reading: Funkin Cocktails I was disappointed to see that Tesco didn't seem to offer its own version of the cocktail so opted for a branded option instead – Funkin Cocktails (£7.50 on Clubcard offer, £9.75 otherwise). Since it was a brand that I often spot in supermarkets, I expected it to be the real deal but it wasn't my favourite. Funkin Cocktails' version got a good rating but it wasn't quite as good as Morrisons'. (Image: Newsquest) It did score highly, though, as it tasted quite subtle and had a sweet aftertaste. The 'bartender edition' label being printed on the bottle got my hopes up, so I'm glad it lived up to my expectations. I was a bit surprised at the odd smell of it, but it tasted nice, so I guess that's all that matters! Rating: 7/10 Overall, this taste test has made me realise just how ideal pre-mixed cocktails are. You don't need to break the bank to enjoy a great cocktail at home, and they add a nice extra touch to a family BBQ or gathering. Happy sipping! ( and please drink responsibly).
