Sports Pulse Former Major League Baseball player Rafael Furcal was arrested in Broward County, Florida earlier this week due to a confrontation in a grocery store parking lot last month in which he threw rocks at a man he nearly crashed into with his car, according to a police affidavit obtained by USA TODAY Sports on Friday. Furcal surrendered to local law enforcement officials without incident on Wednesday and the three-time All-Star shortstop and infielder is currently facing a felony charge of aggravated battery with a deadly weapon. The Sunrise, Florida police department affidavit states that a man was driving a work truck to drop off a coworker in the parking lot of a Publix grocery store on April 28 and Furcal nearly collided with them head-on as he drove through the lot. The truck driver told police he avoided a collision by quickly turning right and made a quick U-turn to circle back to finish dropping off his coworker when they passed Furcal's black Ford pickup truck again. The situation escalated after the truck driver got out of his car, as Furcal allegedly threw a larger rock "the size of a small palm," according to the affidavit. The truck driver, whose name was redacted, told police he tried to block the rock from hitting his body and that Furcal subsequently recognized he was "bleeding profusely" from his left hand before departing the scene. The truck driver told police he chased after Furcal and 'hit him a couple of times with his fists" before Furcal left in the Ford pickup. The truck driver said in a May 1 interview with police that he needed five stitches in his left hand, in addition to bruising on the right side of his body and left arm from the rocks. Police were eventually able to identify Furcal through vehicle registration records tied to a business registered at Furcal's home address in Weston, Florida. Video surveillance footage of Furcal's pickup truck in the parking lot and a positive photo lineup identification by the truck driver also helped the police investigation. An arrest warrant was issued for Furcal on Monday. Furcal played 14 seasons in the majors with the Atlanta Braves, Los Angeles Dodgers, St. Louis Cardinals and Miami Marlins. He won the National League Rookie of the Year award with Atlanta in 2000 and was on the roster for the Cardinals when they won the World Series in 2011. Furcal was arrested in 2000 and 2004 while playing for the Braves for drunk driving, spending 21 days in jail after the latter for violating his probation.

SUNRISE, Fla. (AP) — Former major league shortstop Rafael Furcal threw rocks at another man during a road rage incident last month in South Florida, authorities said. The former All-Star turned himself in at the Broward County jail on Wednesday and was released on bond a short time later, according to court records. He faces felony charges of aggravated battery with a deadly weapon and throwing a missile into public or private dwelling. Court records didn't list a defense attorney for Furcal. His former agent, Paul Kinzer, declined to comment on the charges and did not provide a way to reach Furcal directly. Attempts to reach Furcal at home were unsuccessful. The Sunrise Police Department issued the warrant for Furcal's arrest on Monday. A man had told officers that he had a near-collision with a black pickup truck in a shopping center parking lot on April 28. The other driver, later identified as Furcal, got out of the truck and began throwing rocks at the man's work vehicle, an arrest report said. When the man got out of his vehicle to confront Furcal, the man said he was struck on the hand with a rock while trying to protect himself. The man said he ran up to Furcal and punched him several times, causing Furcal to get back in his truck and leave. Investigators said they used surveillance video to identify the truck's license plate, which showed Furcal as the owner. The alleged victim identified Furcal in a photo lineup as the person who attacked him. Furcal, 47, started with the Atlanta Braves in 2000, followed by stints with the Los Angeles Dodgers and the St. Louis Cardinals. He was with the Cardinals in 2011 when they beat the Texas Rangers in the World Series. He finished his professional baseball career with the Miami Marlins in 2014.

Former Dodgers shortstop Rafael Furcal turned himself in at the Broward County (Fla.) jail Wednesday and was released on bail the same day. (Gus Ruelas / Associated Press) Former Dodgers shortstop Rafael Furcal was arrested this week after he allegedly threw rocks at and injured another man last month in a Publix parking lot in Sunrise, Fla. Charges were filed Monday against Furcal for the second-degree felonies of aggravated battery with a deadly weapon and throwing a deadly missile into an occupied vehicle. On Wednesday, Furcal turned himself in at the Broward County jail and was released on bail the same day. Advertisement The Sunrise Police Department's investigation into the incident remains active. According to the arrest affidavit, which was viewed by The Times, the incident took place in the afternoon of April 28 after Furcal and his accuser — a man whose name was redacted from the affidavit — nearly collided while driving their pickup trucks outside the grocery store. Furcal allegedly got out of his truck and threw rocks and a plastic water bottle at the accuser's vehicle while the man was still inside it, but "didn't cause any substantial damage," the affidavit said. Not so fast Advertisement After the accuser got out of his truck to confront him, the affidavit said, Furcal threw a rock "the size of a small palm" at the other man, who used his left hand to block it. The accuser then chased Furcal and "hit him a couple of times with his fists," the affidavit said, before the former MLB player "ran back to his truck and fled the scene." Furcal told Z101 Digital on Thursday that he threw the rock at his accuser after the man had attacked him with a knife. The affidavit does not mention the alleged knife attack. The former Dodgers player also said he turned himself in after visiting with his son at college and was back home with his family. Days later, the accuser told Det. Jason Jolicoeur that his hand needed five stitches where it was allegedly hit by the rock and that he also had "extensive bruising on the right side of his body and his left arm." He added that Furcal pointed out that the accuser was bleeding before leaving the scene. A witness provided Furcal's license plate number, Jolicoeur wrote. After Jolicoeur identified Furcal through law enforcement databases, the detective wrote, the accuser positively identified Furcal as the suspect in a photo lineup. A three-time All Star, Furcal played six seasons with the Atlanta Braves before signing with the Dodgers as a free agent before the 2006 season. He remained in Los Angeles until being traded to St. Louis in July 2011, then won the World Series with the Cardinals that October. He played his final MLB season, with the Miami Marlins, in 2014.
