MADRID - Montreal's Félix Auger-Aliassime is out of the Madrid Open after a straight-set loss to Argentina's Juan Manuel Cerundolo, 7-6 (7), 6-4, in the Round of 64 on Friday. Auger-Aliassime, seeded 18th and last year's tournament runner-up, fired eight aces and won 86 per cent of his second-serve points but also committed three double faults, was broken once and failed to convert any of his five break chances. Cerundolo advances to face ninth seed Daniil Medvedev in the third round. In the women's draw, Bianca Andreescu of Mississauga, Ont., was scheduled to meet 10th seed Elena Rybakina later Friday in second-round action. Andreescu, the 2019 U.S. Open champion, returned to WTA 1000 competition this week after a six-month break to focus on her health. Montreal's Félix Auger-Aliassime advanced to the quarter-finals of the Qatar Open tennis tournament Wednesday when second-round opponent Hamad Medjedovic withdrew with a right leg injury. Auger-Aliassime will next face Russia's Daniil Medvedev on Thursday. Medjedovic had advanced with a 7-6 (6), 5-7, 7-6 (5) upset of sixth seed Stefanos Tsitsipas in first-round action Tuesday. The Serbian was in clear discomfort as he fought through the third-set tiebreak. Auger-Aliassime also needed a third-set tiebreak in his first-round match, a 4-6, 6-4, 7-6 (2) win over French qualifier Quentin Halys. Medvedev, ranked sixth on the ATP Tour, holds a commanding 7-1 head-to-head record versus Auger-Aliassime, but the Canadian won the most recent meeting in the round of 16 at the 2024 Paris Olympics. The Russian defeated Auger-Aliassime in the Qatar Open semi-finals in 2023. Auger-Aliassime, tanked 23rd in the world, is seeking his third ATP Tour title of the season.

Canadian Félix Auger-Aliassime retires from first-round match at ABN Amro Open

Canada's Félix Auger-Aliassime retired from his first-round match against Italian qualifier Andrea Vavassori at the ABN Amro Open on Wednesday. Auger-Aliassime, from Montreal, stopped playing after dropping a 6-4 decision in the second set. He had taken the opener 7-6 (3). It wasn't clear why the Canadian chose to retire. A message left with Tennis Canada was not immediately returned. The 23rd-ranked Auger-Aliassime was coming off a title last week In Montpellier, France. It was his seventh career ATP Tour title and second this season.
