Forecasts show pro-European Dan ahead in Romanian election
BucharestcTypeface:> Polls closed on Sunday in Romania's presidential election, with forecasts based on voter surveys showing the independent, pro-European Bucharest Mayor Nicusor Dan with a sharp lead over his far-right opponent George Simion.
Dan garnered between 54.1% and 54.9% of the vote, with Simion trailing with 45.1% to 45.9%, broadcaster Digi24 and news portal reported, citing polling institutes CURS and Avangarde. .
Partial official results were expected to be released over the course of the evening. In the first round of voting, held in early May, the final results were announced the following morning.
The election is seen as important to the European Union and Ukraine, which has been fending off a full-scale Russian invasion for more than three years. (DPA)
