10,000+ MW power capacity by 2026: KRG announces GE.N partnership

Shafaq News/ The Kurdistan Region plans to add more than 1,000 MW to its electricity grid by early 2026, KRG Minister of Electricity Kamil Mohammad announced on Sunday. During a contract signing ceremony between Toros and General Electric (GE.N) in al-Sulaymaniyah province, Mohammad addressed concerns over the Region's electricity shortage, acknowledging the ongoing complaints over the past 33 years. He pointed out that until 2005, the Kurdistan Region had only two hydroelectric power stations—Dukan and Darbandikhan—that together produced a maximum of 200 MW. In contrast, the Region now generates 8,189 MW of electricity, with 5,250 MW (64%) coming from GE.N. Mohammad highlighted the company's essential role in rebuilding and upgrading the Region's electricity infrastructure, stating, "The partnership with General Electric has been vital in transforming our electricity sector, and their continued support will be crucial for future projects.' The minister also pointed to an ongoing project at the Khor Mor field, which aims to increase gas production by an additional 250 million standard cubic feet (MMscf). Mohammad expressed optimism that the project will be operational by the first quarter of 2026, contributing over 1,200 MW to the national grid and supporting both the Kurdistan Region and Iraq's electricity network. Meanwhile, Deputy Prime Minister Qubad Talabani, also present at the ceremony, reinforced the government's broader energy goals, emphasizing that the KRG aims to provide electricity not only to specific areas of Kurdistan but to all Iraqi provinces. "Our vision is clear: we will not rest until every region of Iraq has access to reliable electricity," he remarked. Talabani also stressed the government's commitment to achieving this goal while prioritizing cleaner, more sustainable energy sources. "We are focused on sustainability and cleaner energy options to ensure that our energy policies benefit both the people and the environment," he added.

Travelers in Toronto brace for delays after Delta plane flips over

STORY: :: Global News :: February 17, 2025 :: Travelers brace for delays, cancellations in Toronto after a Delta plane flips on landing :: The airport's CEO says to expect delays for two days while runways are investigated :: Toronto, Canada :: Stephen Strauss/Passenger "We are off to Fort Lauderdale at 4:55, but we have only been delayed a half an hour so far. When I was out grabbing lunch, I hear people at the table behind me saying there was an accident at Pearson. What? And then someone at the end of the bar said, yeah a plane flipped over. And I'm like, what! And so we are hearing cancellations, and the airport closed and all this time. And then finally when things, information starts flowing, we are hearing that we are only delayed and not canceled. So we were going through the whole gamut of, where are we going to stay tonight, are we leaving tomorrow morning, we have got to catch a cruise. And we can't catch any port of call until the beginning of March. So we got to get on this boat." Three people on the flight that originated at Minneapolis-St. Paul International Airport suffered critical injuries, among them a child, authorities added. U.S. carrier Delta said a CRJ900 aircraft operated by its Endeavor Air subsidiary was involved in a single-aircraft accident with 76 passengers and four crew members on board. The 16-year-old CRJ900, made by Canada's Bombardier and powered by GE Aerospace GE.N engines, can seat up to 90 people. Canadian authorities said they would investigate the cause of the crash, which was not yet known. Pearson Airport said earlier on Monday it was dealing with high winds and frigid temperatures as airlines attempted to catch up with missed flights after a weekend snowstorm dumped more than 22 cm (8.6 inches) of snow at the airport. The Delta plane touched down in Toronto at 2:13 p.m. (1913 GMT) after an 86-minute flight and came to rest near the intersection of runway 23 and runway 15, according to flight tracking website FlightRadar24.

India expects stable delivery of GE-powered fighter jets next fiscal year after delays

BENGALURU, Feb 10 (Reuters) - India expects stable delivery of a domestically-made light combat aircraft powered by a GE (GE.N), opens new tab engine in the upcoming fiscal year after a delay of nearly 12 months, a top government official said on Sunday. India's state-run planemaker Hindustan Aeronautics Ltd (HAL) ( opens new tab would have the capacity to hand over 16 to 24 aircraft in the fiscal year that starts in April following stable delivery of the engine made by the aerospace division of GE, the official said. The delivery of engines for the fighter jet named "Tejas" was due to begin in March 2024, but Indian defence ministry sources said supply chain constraints faced by GE impacted new deliveries beyond the 65 engines already delivered as of 2023. The Indian Air Force is desperate to shore up its fighter squadrons, which have fallen to 31 from a target of 42, at a time when rival China is expanding its own air force. "The good news is that now the production line has stabilised. Not only in HAL, but also at the engine maker GE," India's Defence Production Secretary Sanjeev Kumar told reporters in the southern city of Bengaluru on the eve of the biennial Aero India aerospace exhibition, which begins on Monday. "We are working with our American partner GE ... so that their supply also gets streamlined in this year 2025-26 and onwards. So that makes us believe that we would be able to meet the pace that is required," Kumar added.
