Experts discuss efforts to accelerate clean energy transition in aviation at GISS 2025

ABU DHABI - Aviation experts discussed efforts aimed at accelerating the adoption of clean energy in the aviation sector, with a strong emphasis on promoting sustainable aviation fuel (SAF). Their remarks were made during the 4th ICAO Global Implementation Support Symposium 2025 (GISS 2025) and the inaugural Global Sustainable Aviation Marketplace (GSAM 2025). Fabrice Espinosa, Founder and CEO of the Asia Sustainable Aviation Fuel Association (ASAFA), emphasised the importance of regional collaboration in Asia to support the implementation of SAF in aviation. He stressed that the association's primary goal is to foster an inclusive, regional approach involving both government and private sector stakeholders to accelerate the adoption of sustainable fuels across the region. Espinosa outlined the association's focus on five key pillars: promoting a regional policy approach to ensure fair competition within the SAF industry, enhancing capacity building to meet market demands and achieve technological independence, advancing new technologies such as alcohol-to-jet and power-to-liquid innovations, increasing knowledge sharing within the region, and securing financing to support these initiatives. He emphasised that these pillars are essential for achieving long-term sustainability and fostering the industry's growth in Asia. Jane Hupe, Director in charge of the environment programme at the International Civil Aviation Organisation (ICAO), discussed the need for a comprehensive policy framework to accelerate the clean energy transition in aviation. She highlighted the importance of balancing the global framework adopted at the CAAF3 conference in the UAE in 2023, ensuring that all key elements are in place for a smooth transition. Hupe also stressed the critical need for capacity building, ensuring that all countries can engage in the clean energy transition. She emphasised the importance of helping countries become active participants in this transformation. Addressing the topic of financing, Hupe noted that adequate investment is crucial to support the transition and ensure that the aviation sector can continue to grow without unnecessary restrictions.

UAE civil aviation sector transported 147.8m passengers in 2024; country now has over 9,600 pilots and 36,000 cabin crew

The UAE's civil aviation sector achieved significant growth in 2024, with passenger traffic increasing by 10 per cent to reach 147.8m from 134m in 2023, according to the General Civil Aviation Authority (GCAA). Air cargo also saw notable growth of 17.8 per cent to reach 4.36m tons compared to 3.7m tons last year, reinforcing the UAE's position as a leading global hub for air transport. These results reflect the sector's sustainable growth and operational efficiency, as well as its vital role in connecting the world through the UAE. UAE aviation Abdulla bin Touq Al Marri, Minister of Economy and Chairman of the GCAA, said: 'These figures are not just growth indicators, they are a clear testament to the strength of the UAE's aviation sector and its key role in supporting the national economy. 'The sector continues to enhance the country's position as a global hub for air transport, trade, tourism, and investment. This progress is a direct result of our leadership's vision, which has laid the foundation for a strong and competitive aviation sector that has gained significant global confidence. 'This confidence is evident in the UAE's selection to host key events shaping the future of aviation. In just a few days, Abu Dhabi will welcome one of the world's largest civil aviation gatherings, hosting the ICAO 4th Global Implementation Support Symposium (GISS 2025), alongside the launch of the Global Sustainable Aviation Marketplace, an initiative by the UAE aimed at accelerating global efforts to scale up the production of sustainable, low-carbon aviation fuel. 'These landmark events will be instrumental in advancing a safe and sustainable aviation ecosystem, with the UAE at its core.' Saif Mohammed Al Suwaidi, Director-General of the General Civil Aviation Authority GCAA, highlighted that the impressive results achieved by the UAE's aviation sector in 2024 underscore its growing strength and competitiveness, solidifying its role as a key driver of economic and social growth. Strategic investments in infrastructure have enabled the sector to keep pace with global demand, offering some of the world's best air transport services and thereby unlocking vast economic opportunities. In 2024, the country welcomed 41.6m inbound passengers, while 41.7m departed, and 64.4m transited through its airports. The aviation sector also witnessed a notable increase in workforce numbers, with 9,622 registered pilots, 35,899 cabin crew members, 4,493 engineers, 461 air traffic controllers, and 419 dispatchers. In terms of infrastructure, the number of registered air operators in the UAE rose to 36, with a total of 929 registered aircrafts, including light sports aircrafts, of which 520 belong to national carriers. Air traffic movements reached 1.03m flights last year, marking the highest recorded air traffic volume in the country's history.
