GITAI Establishes GITAI Defense & Space LLC to Enhance U.S. Government Contracting Capabilities

TORRANCE, Calif., April 8, 2025 /PRNewswire/ -- GITAI USA Inc. (GITAI), a U.S.-headquartered space robotics company, today announced the establishment of its new subsidiary, GITAI Defense & Space LLC, incorporated in Delaware and operating from the company's headquarters in Torrance, California. This strategic move positions GITAI to serve as a prime contractor for U.S. Department of Defense (DoD) and NASA programs. Addressing U.S. Government Contracting RequirementsGITAI USA, based in Torrance, California, already designs and manufactures all of its space robotics systems—including advanced robotic arms, satellites, and robotic rovers—entirely within the United States. The company has a proven track record of securing contracts from U.S. government agencies such as DARPA, as well as from leading U.S. commercial space companies. However, certain DoD and NASA solicitations require that prime contractors be majority-owned or controlled by U.S. citizens or permanent residents. To meet these criteria, GITAI Defense & Space LLC has been structured under a voting trust: * 51% ownership by a U.S. trust company* 49% ownership by GITAI USA Inc. This ownership structure enables GITAI Defense & Space LLC to qualify for prime contractor roles in U.S. government contracts. The new subsidiary will focus on supporting national security missions—particularly by providing satellite buses for defense-oriented constellations and on-orbit servicing solutions powered by GITAI's proprietary robotics technologies. GITAI Awarded JAXA Contract for Concept Study of Robotic Arm for Crewed Pressurized Lunar Rover

TORRANCE, Calif., March 31, 2025 /PRNewswire/ -- GITAI, a U.S.-headquartered space robotics company, announced that its Japanese subsidiary, GITAI Japan Inc., has been awarded a contract by the Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency (JAXA) to conduct a concept study for a robotic arm system intended for use on a pressurized crewed lunar rover. This rover is part of Japan's contribution to the Artemis program and is designed to enable long-duration human exploration of the Moon's polar regions. The objective of this study is to define the design and specifications for a robotic arm system capable of supporting lunar science operations primarily during uncrewed periods, while also providing support during crewed missions when needed. The arm will be tasked with performing a range of mission-critical operations, including regolith excavation, rock and soil sample collection, unloading, handling and installation of large payloads such as scientific instruments and observation equipment. It will also enable science activities through both remote and autonomous control capabilities. These functions are expected to significantly expand the scope and duration of lunar surface research. This contract builds upon GITAI's strong track record in developing and demonstrating advanced space robotics technologies. Notable achievements include: ISS Demonstrations: Successful technical demonstrations of GITAI's robotic arms both inside and outside the International Space Station (ISS), performing autonomous structure assembly and maintenance tasks. LEO Satellite Validation: In 2024, GITAI successfully launched and operated its first in-house developed 16U-class satellite in low Earth orbit (LEO), validating key satellite bus systems, including attitude control via reaction wheels and orbital maneuvers using propulsion systems. Lunar Readiness: GITAI's inchworm-type robotic arm has completed rigorous environmental testing—including regolith exposure, thermal vacuum, vibration, and radiation tests—achieving Technology Readiness Level 6 (TRL-6) for operations in the extreme conditions of the lunar South Pole. U.S. Expansion: GITAI has fully relocated its headquarters and manufacturing operations to Torrance, California, and secured U.S. permanent residency status for its management and core technical team. The company has been awarded contracts by leading U.S. agencies such as NASA and DARPA, as well as major U.S. commercial space companies. This concept study represents a significant step forward in enabling autonomous and remote-controlled lunar science operations and supporting sustained exploration through robotic labor on the Moon. Photo credit: GITAI Space robotics startup GITAI has announced the launch and mission completion of its first 16U-sized satellite. The satellite, developed entirely in-house, was launched into low Earth orbit aboard SpaceX's Falcon 9 on December 21, 2024, as part of the Bandwagon 2 rideshare mission. GITAI declared 'Full Success' for the mission, having achieved all three of its technical verification criteria. The satellite’s success validates GITAI's commitment to drastically reducing the cost of space operations by a factor of 100. The company is pioneering advanced technologies, including robotic satellites for on-orbit services, lunar rovers for infrastructure construction and versatile inchworm-like robotic arms. These technologies, designed and produced in-house, represent GITAI’s focus on innovation and cost efficiency. Since its founding, GITAI has developed a robust system for creating space-grade robotics, including a robotic arm that demonstrated mission success inside the International Space Station (ISS) in 2021 and outside the ISS in 2024. In January 2024, GITAI expanded into satellite development, creating the SC1 satellite to provide a platform for comprehensive on-orbit services. Building on this success, GITAI plans to demonstrate rendezvous and docking capabilities in 2026 as part of its Space Demonstration Experiment (S3). This mission will feature a 500kg-class satellite equipped with a robotic arm and a target satellite, further showcasing the company’s on-orbit service capabilities. The SC1 mission has also validated GITAI's ability to design and produce space-qualified components (TRL-9) in-house, such as propulsion systems, reaction wheels and star trackers. By developing high-cost, long-lead-time components internally by 2025, GITAI aims to cut costs, shorten timelines and improve profit margins. The company remains focused on securing contracts from US government agencies while advancing its mission to revolutionise space operations through cost-effective on-orbit services and lunar infrastructure solutions.
