Two residents and dog displaced by 'difficult-to-reach' basement fire on North 21st Street

GRAND JUNCTION, Colo. (KREX) – This morning, firefighters from the Grand Junction Fire Department extinguished a basement fire discovered in a home on the 2100 block of North 21st Street, according to a statement by the GJFD. Officials say firefighters were dispatched to the residence after homeowners reported the fire to 9-1-1. When they arrived, firefighters were met heavy smoke and 'intense' heat emanating from the homeowners' 'difficult-to-reach' basement, requiring GJFD to extinguish the flames through an outside window. Officials tell us there were no reported injuries from the fire, but GJPD Victim Advocates and American Red Cross were called in to assist the two displaced homeowners and their pet dog. The cause of the fire and its origin are unknown and under investigation. Copyright 2025 Nexstar Media, Inc. All rights reserved. Explosion on Winters Avenue leaves 1 injured

GRAND JUNCTION, Colo. (KREX) — An explosion has been reported at a local defense contractor on Winters Avenue. Grand Junction Fire Department responded to Valor Tactical Innovation, 1328 Winters Ave., arriving on scene around 4:04 p.m. Valor Tactical Innovation creates small explosive loads that shoot flares out of fighter jets. Firefighters found light smoke in the lobby after arriving to the scene. GJFD determined that a small quantity of combustible powder ignited inside a climate-controlled booth where materials were being mixed, the press release said. GJFD Public Information Officer Dirk Clingman told WesternSlopeNow there was one worker suffered a burn to the back of the hand and is currently being treated. Clingman said the worker was inside of a climate-controlled booth. The explosion did not reach outside the booth, he added. Fire crews found that no active fire remained because of the explosion. A member of the Grand Junction Police Department bomb squad assisted at the scene. The origin and cause of the explosion are under investigation. No additional hazards have been reported currently. GJFD adds new fire truck to fleet

GRAND JUNCTION, Colo. (KREX) — In front of Station 6, the Grand Junction Fire Department unveiled its new tower truck, Tower 6, to onlookers. The 100-foot mid-mount platform truck was welcomed into the fleet Friday. Tower 6 will replace a straight ladder truck that will be placed in reserve. The truck will cover the northside of town, providing advanced capability to the city's high-rise buildings. GJFD interim Chief Gus Hendricks explains the tower system. 'It has an elevated aerial that we can put in the air, and it has a bucket or a platform on the end. We call it a mid-mount, because when you have an opportunity to see it, instead of that turn table being on the rear of the vehicle, it's in the middle of the vehicle.' Making it easier for the engineer to work the ladder and driver and also allowing firefighters to sweep buildings for rescue. The truck holds six but they typically staff four. An engineer who drives, a captain who is the company officer in charge of the crew and two firefighters. The truck was ordered in October 2022 under previous Fire Chief Ken Watkins. 'It's (Tower 6) in the fire service; what we call a quint. Meaning, it has five different capabilities. One of which is not only the aerial, but it also does carry water.' You might be able to catch this truck while you're out and about as crews continue their training with this new truck. Copyright 2025 Nexstar Media, Inc. All rights reserved.
