Koppa police crack down on safety violations by autos ferrying schoolchildren
Chikkamagaluru: Koppa police have cracked down on autorickshaws neglecting the safety of children while ferrying them to schools. The police imposed fines on a few and issued warnings to many others.
Despite strict warnings to the autorickshaws ferrying schoolchildren not to neglect the safety of students, the drivers continued to violate norms, putting the safety of children in jeopardy. Most of the rickshaws were overloaded with students, and drivers made children occupy their seats to accommodate more passengers. In many cases, autos carried more than ten children.
Koppa PSI GK Basavaraj, who noticed an overloaded auto, stopped the vehicle and charged the driver.
He questioned the necessity of taking all the students at once and warned him not to put children's lives in danger.
The PSI stated that there were several instances where untoward incidents were reported due to the violation of traffic norms. "Life is precious, and a small negligence would prove costly. Thus, everyone must follow traffic norms and must understand that the rules are made for people's safety," the PSI said.

Will take strict action: Koppa PSI
He appealed to educational institutions as well as parents to ensure that the vehicles carrying their children were in order and that there were no rule violations. "We have imposed penalties on a few autorickshaws and issued warnings to others. We will monitor all the vehicles, particularly those carrying schoolchildren, and initiate strict legal action," he said.
Despite parents being aware of dire consequences, many were helpless and sent their children in autos.
A parent who wished to maintain anonymity said there was no fixed fare to ferry students. The drivers demand high charges if there are fewer students, and the police and the authorities concerned must take the initiative in this regard and fix prices, he said.
The issue is common across the district, and the authorities concerned must take measures to resolve it, suggested activist Pramod. He also added that many school buses violate norms, and the police must check for violations. In many buses, children and teachers were made to stand while travelling, he said.
